According to this post title at The Other McCain, Gov. Palin has turned down the invitation that CNN had extended to her to participate in the debate being sponsored tonight by the network and Tea Party Express. We had gathered as much when no news came over the weekend that she had accepted the invitation, and Greta Van Susteren announced that Sarah Palin would be a guest on her "On The Record" program tonight.
If she had accepted the CNN invitation to debate, it would have likely been a violation of her contract with Fox News, a job the governor doesn't appear quite ready to give up -- at least not just yet.
Stacy also reports the results of CNN's latest GOP presidential poll, which has Gov. Palin in third place with 15 percent, behind Ranger Rick with 30 percent and Mitt Romney with 18 percent.

Over the past four months, Rasmussen Reports polling has consistently shown Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani holding the top two slots in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. During that time, the weekly poll results have shown Thompson’s support ranging from a low of 20% to a high of 28%. Giuliani’s range has been similar, from 19% to 27%. Although Thompson and Giuliani are the frontrunners, both men still have plenty of detractors who say they can’t possibly win the nomination.
For the week ending September 23, it’s Thompson 26% and Giuliani 22%.
Occupying a precarious niche somewhere between the frontrunners and the also-rans are John McCain and Mitt Romney. Both men were early favorites of Washington pundits but haven’t done as well among Republican primary voters. During the past four months, McCain’s support has ranged from 11% to 14%. Romney’s range has been from 11% to 15%.
Romney needs to win in Iowa and win big in New Hampshire if he is to remain a viable top-tier candidate. In both states, he began advertising early, spent more money than any other candidate, and set high expectations. However, his lead is down to just three points in the latest Rasmussen Reports poll of New Hampshire primary voters. In addition to doing well in Iowa and New Hampshire, Romney has to hope that those states have as much impact as they did in the pre-internet era. Interestingly, Romney now has essentially the same tactical strategy that Barack Obama is counting on in the Democratic nominating competition.
McCain has an even tougher road ahead of him. It is hard to see him getting the nomination barring significant mistakes by Giuliani, Thompson, and Romney.
Still, as we noted last week, the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination remains very fluid. Thompson is still seen by Republican voters as the most conservative candidate in the field while Giuliani is seen as the most electable.
Rasmussen Reports conducts national telephone surveys on the Presidential race every night and releases updated data from our Presidential Tracking Poll by noon each day, Monday through Friday.
Those results are based upon a four-day rolling average and provide a quick update on the race.
In addition to the daily tracking poll, Rasmussen Reports provides weekly results to provide a longer-term overview of the race. These updates are based upon nightly telephone surveys. Results are reported based upon interviews conducted on the seven days up to and including the night before posting.
For the seven days ending September 23, 2007 show that Fred Thompson earns 26% of the vote while Rudy Giuliani attracts 22%. They are followed by John McCain at 14%, Mitt Romney at 12%, Mike Huckabee at 6%, and four other candidates who split 4% of the vote while 17% are undecided. Those other four candidates, mentioned by name in the polling question, are Sam Brownback, Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, and Tom Tancredo (review history of weekly results).
The seven day results typically include interviews with more than 1,000 Likely Republican Primary Voters. This includes both Republicans and those independents likely to vote in a Republicans Primary. In some state primaries, independent voters are allowed to participate in party primaries while in others they are excluded. The margin of sampling error for the weekly update is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
Updates prior to July 16 were based upon four days of polling conducted the Monday through Thursday preceding release.
Rasmussen Reports continuously updates general election match-ups and other key stats for all Republican and Democratic Presidential candidates.
Who cares? It's not relevant to anything. People sign exclusivity contracts and check to see what the boundaries are. Again, it has nothing to do with whether Fox is keeping her from announcing for President. Right this very minute Governor Palin could pick up the phone, call Roger Ailes, announce she plans to run for President, and she'd be suspended or released from her contract with Fox immediately.
Palin has not announced for President because she simply doesn't want to.

As mid-to-end September nears, there will be more excuses as to why she hasnt announced. Now they start blaming FOX as if the contract with FOX is prohibiting her from running for President. Oct 31 is the last possible day, I believe. At the start of Oct, a number of Palin supporters will start looking towards that date and telling others how Reagan didnt announce until Nov, how she doesnt need to announce early, etc etc.
These fans need to understand she is in it for the money, nothing else. She is going to milk all sources until they run dry.

You're talking to some of the most well-informed people on the planet. Most of them probably just had a chuckle reading your post of that meaningless poll. Name me one poll from any presidential primary that held true, fourteen months out from the general election.

At this point I'm not even sure the "tease campaign" will end. I think she will announce she isn't running for the Republican nomination for president, which for her die hard supporters will leave them believing she might run 3rd party. Palin might even fan those flames by paying another visit to Trump. It's entirely clear she isn't actually running for President at this point and all the speculation has become completely silly.
Exactly right. She's holding trump cards that the others just don't possess. They have to be part of the bloody demolition derby that's playing out. She doesn't, and is very smart to steer clear until there's a clear advantage to be gained by officially declaring.
Sarah isn’t a slave to Fox. She can terminate her contract with them in any number of ways, and you can bet your bottom dollar that her attorneys made sure that she had plenty of exit clauses.
From what I understand, she has the same terms that Newt had, i.e., if she files to run for the nomination, her contract is automatically suspended.

Why give the media chances to ask questions designed to make you look bad. The media is 100% on Obama's side in this race. Anything they are doing with the Republicans, they are doing to discredit all the Republican candidates.
The same logic explains her delayed entry into the race. There's simply nothing for her to gain by being a part of the early stages of this contest.
Cooler and wiser minds see this clearly. Even her unhinged detractors sense it, which is why they've seized on the "she's not running" mantra of the left to explain what she's doing.
They're actually scared to death that she really is running. It's a strange sort of paranoia, but interesting to watch.
Mesta, you're smarter than the average bear. Surely you can't have watched her every move over the last eighteen months without gaining complete certainty that she's running, can you?

She sure doesn’t. Every candidate running right now is repeating her message...and it shows. And people KNOW it. Why settle for cheap imitations when you can have the real thing?

Oh, we may disagree on whether she's a candidate. She may not have officially declared, but there's no question that she's campaigning for the nomination. The fact that she can do this without being a declared candidate says everything about the strength of her position within the field.
She's the 8,000 pound Godzilla from Wasilla, and can afford to wait out the bloody demolition derby that's going on now. We would have stopped talking about any other prospective candidate long ago, if they'd held out this long.
Not Sarah. She gets more attention than all the rest combined, even while keeping her lip zipped about her intentions. Tell me what other prospective candidate could do that?
