Few people in the world have about Andrea Rossi’s “energy catalyzer” (E-cat) technology which, if validated, would provide useful power in a much cheaper way than in currently possible. The main reason for this is that there has been precious little coverage of this story in the mainstream media.
The media outlet that has provided most information about the Rossi device is the Swedish NyTeknik site. They have held live Q&A’s with Rossi and recently interviewed two respected Swedish physics professors who visited Rossi in Italy and observed testing of the E-cat. There is however a growing amount of interest in the story from people following it through various Internet outlets, and Andrea Rossi himself is interacting with the public through his own website, The Journal of Nuclear Physics. It is always interesting to look at what he is saying in response to questions, and his latest comment is quite interesting.

I wish there were more reports in English. The translations of a lot of these reports leave something to be desired. Thanks for posting this, we’ll see if we can glean anything new.
I listened to an interview with him, he is funding the project with his own money and that of family and friends. He has shunned “normal” methods of financing because of fear that he would lose control, which he said he had in the past. Far from sounding like a fraud, he seems to have a new idea that can improve life for the entire world.
English is not his first language, and the article may be a google translation.
Some have pointed to Rossi's past as evidence of him being a scam artist. But from what I gather of the 'Petrodragon' episode, he was a real inventor with real technology that just didn't pan out for technical reasons (that ran into legal issues due to resulting pollutants, etc.), not a flim-flam scammer.
So, my baloney-meter is starting to tilt towards this thing being for real. Wow. Let me say that again. Wow.

I don’t think this would be considered free energy. Rossi characterizes it as a low-energy nuclear reaction (stays away from the “cold fusion” label)
We know that hot fusion is possible as it’s been used in hydrogen bomb technology — what appears to be going on is a method of controlling the fusion process using a way of forcing the hydrogen and nickel (with a catalyst)in such a way as to release radiation/heat.
Interesting stuff.

No. But occasionally you can hit a good two-for-one deal at a buffet.
Rossi has said he won’t be charging Defkalion (the first installers)for the e-cat hardware. He’ll make his money solely from the electricity he sells them. No electricity — he makes nothing, and loses all his investment.
He’s trying his best to avoid the scammer label.
Just why would anyone who controls a breakthrough technology with the potential to solve one of mankind's greatest problems spend even one minute worrying about being labelled a scammer?
If he intends to give his discovery to the world, then he need only release the details of his invention.
If he intends to profit from the invention, then he needs to maximize his ability to use other people's money to develop it and he should do it quietly so as to prevent others from claiming to have invented the discovery.
My prediction is that there will be some unforseen difficulty in the coming months and that eventually it will be revealed that some investors, who literally begged to "get in on the ground floor", will be wondering what will happen to their money.
I hope this is legitimate - not trying to bust him. He has the problem of all those other claims that turned out to be false.
The energy has to come from somewhere. Something has to change through a catalytic or some other process.
Without a verified patent - he is one of many.

Fission is splitting the atom (traditional nuclear reactors), this isn’t what’s going on here.
It's not exactly fusion. What appears to happen is that a sufficiently intense local electric field causes a hydrogen proton to combine with an electron to become a ultra-low-momentum neutron. The neutron is then captured by a nickel nucleus, turning it into an unstable isotope with a half-life of 2 hours. The extra neutron in the nucleus decays back into a proton by beta decay (emitting an electron), and turns it into a copper nucleus.
