> Mind you, this would have been different a few centuries ago. The Church used to kill heretics...

True, at least for some faction of the the Church.

In my own opinion, those actions were done mostly by corrupt, evil humans, not by any true representative of the Body of Christ (as Christians may view the Church). I cannot believe that Jesus Christ, or the God of the Christians and Jews, would condone such behavior on their behalf.

The God of the Old Testament might impart such punishment Himself, but that's His prerogative. :)

> ...but that was then, and this is now.

Indeed.

I don't want to kill you.

Er...thanks?

I wish you a long and healthy life. I truly mean it.

My point was that the media lied to you about Christians in America. I don't want a theocracy. I will (and cannot) force you to accept my beliefs. I was pointing out the difference between me and Muslims who would impose Sharia law on you.

However, that is not to say that Christians should be banned from public life.

Again, I'll say it. The Media and the left lied right to your face. They continue to lie.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church would be the only threat to Abin Sur’s atheism that I'm aware of here in the U.S.

Not so much...I actually encountered these losers at Comic-Con last year in San Diego. They were outnumbered by a factor of 10,000 to 1 (no exaggeration) by myself and my fellow nerds. I just pointed at them and laughed.

"Terry Jones has blood on his hands as well."

In just a few days, this argument has gotten very, very old.

Hm...that seems a bit like the "No True Scotsman" fallacy. Moral standards change over time, and acts that were in accord with the Church (and public at large) of the 15th Century are now viewed by us with distaste.

I agree that the vast majority of Christians feel exactly the same way, with the notable exception of those subscribing to Dominionism. I would note that bringing the United States under Dominionist rule, while a terrible idea, would still not be as bad as bringing it under Sharia law.

However, that is not to say that Christians should be banned from public life.

Good heavens (um, so to speak)...who's advocating that?

Again, I'll say it. The Media and the left lied right to your face. They continue to lie.

I'll certainly grant that the mainstream mass media have an anti-Christian bias.

More than "a bit" -- you are correct, I did stumble in that regard. I withdraw my assertion about "true representatives" of the Church.

I do, however, still maintain that the Jesus Christ described in the New Testament would be extremely unlikely to condone such behavior. He sounds to me like a pretty easy-going sort of fellow, who would give you the opportunity to believe what He said, or not; and would not kill you if you chose not to, but rather would only express the hope that you might change your mind before shuffling off your mortal coil in some other fashion later on.

I would be a hypocrite if I insisted that I want to be a free man, yet want to force you to subscribe to my beliefs.

I'm glad we understand each other.

Let me add one more thing. Take note of the fact that Christians will rebuke each other openly. If somebody comes to me in the right spirit I would understand that my brother or sister is telling me so because he/ she truly is concerned for my welfare.

You will rarely if ever see that in Islam.

As for the good general, if he can't protect the lives of his troops AND the rights of Americans guaranteed by the Constitution then it's time to bring the troops home.

You may have stumbled into the General's thoughts. I do not know this for certain, btw, yet a General is a General is a General for many reasons.
