TASTY TRIVIA -- A Call for suggestions & submissions of favorite bits of triva (vanity)

These are just a few examples to get us started:

The Harlem Globetrotters was the brainchild of promoter-coach Abe Saperstein in the mid- to late-1920s. He thought the name gave them the right amount of appeal, mystique and prestige despite the fact, or perhaps, because of the fact, that he and his original players all came from, Chicago, not New York. And their headquarters was in Chicago too.

Teens who own dogs get more physical exercise than teens who don't.

If you have a bottle or jar top that won't unscrew, just run it under the hot water faucet for a few minutes. The heat will usually make the top expand faster than the jar or bottle, and you'll usually be able to unscrew it without using an adjustable pliers or other opener.

Teddy bears were first made by Morris Michtom, who was inspired by a 1902 cartoon depicting President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt refusing to shoot a tired old bear that had been trapped and tied up for him because it would have been un-sportsmanlike. It was based on an actual hunting trip incident.

Coffee helps you wake up and keep you up because of how the caffeine in it affects your blood sugar level. But if you don't have a little fruit juice first, you may not have enough blood sugar in the first place, and it isn't anywhere near as effective as if you did.

John "Johnny Appleseed" Chapman, did not, as many people believe, plant apple trees by tossing seeds hither and yon. He was a philanthropic missionary and businessman who actually started nurseries where sapling apple trees were nurtured until they could be sold to people who wanted to grow their own.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, 2nd and 3rd Presidents respectively, (also 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents respectively) both died on July 4, 1826 -- exactly 50 years to the day after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Although they belonged to opposing parties, they remained fast friends who corresponded regularly until their simultaneous deaths.

23% of the Federal Budget now goes toward interest on the national debt. As the debt continues to explode, so does the percentage that goes toward interest. And Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security now make up almost half the Federal Budget. And the new health care bureaucracies, not yet in place, are estimated to cost a trillion dollars a year more.

The late John Cazale.

Correct! To repeat the question, what actor made only five movies in his lifetime, and all five were nominated for Best Picture, and three of them won best picture? Cazale played Fredo in both Godfather movies, and was also in "Dog Day Afternoon", "The Conversation", and "The Deer Hunter." Tragically, he died of cancer just after "The Deer Hunter" was released.

I was going for Smallpox and Edward Jenner.

Malaria seems to be making a good case for itself, though. I wonder if DDT could be considered a “cure” for malaria.

United States Notes. Some say this is why he was assassinated.

(Red seal and serial numbers, what other colors have been used, and which classes of notes do they correspond with?)

Sean Bean (who played Alex Trevelyan in the James Bond movie Goldeneye) also played Boromir in The Lord of The Rings.

Christopher Lee (who played Francisco Scaramanga in the Bond movie The Man with the Golden Gun) played Saruman in The Lord of the Rings.

Ian McKellen (who played Magneto in X-Men) played Gandalf in The Lord of The Rings.

Cheers!

To expand on this bit of trivia, James Monroe died on July 4, 1831. And Calvin Coolidge was born on July 4, 1872.

Finally, Harry Truman and Gerald Ford both died on December 26 - 1972 and 2006 respectively.

Toward the end of the Nixon presidency, there were no living former presidents.

There have three occasions where we have had 5 living former presidents at the same time:

Under Clinton: Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Bush, Sr.
Under George W. Bush: Clinton, Bush, Sr., Reagan, Carter, Ford
and under Lincoln: Buchanan, Pierce, Filmore, Van Buren, and Tyler.

Matthew 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

The eye of the needle was the security door/gate in the wall of Jerusalem, that was guarded and left open for night travelers. It wasn't big enough for a camel to get through, unless he was unpacked and crawled through on his knees. Think about it ;)

So, the way I take it, the admonition was NOT against getting rich; it was against getting rich by taking advantage of people without their permission (i.e., by extortion, theft or fraud instead of by trade in beneficial, wanted goods and services).

"It is truly a triumph of rhetoric over reality when people can believe that going into politics is 'public service,' but that producing food, shelter, transportation, or medical care is not." -- Thomas Sowell, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Economics, The Hoover Institution, Stanford University
