A report posted today at a CNN website claims the "mystery missile launch" on Monday was actually a Chinese missile test. According to the report:
China flexed its military muscle Monday evening in the skies west of Los Angeles when a Chinese Navy Jin class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, deployed secretly from its underground home base on the south coast of Hainan island, launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from international waters off the southern California coast. WMR’s intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia.
However, the report - placed on CNN's user-generated iReport site - has yet to be vetted or confirmed by CNN, and is full of un-named, unquoted sources. The only link provided goes to a site with basically the same report - again, with no corroboration.
The source of the report is one Wayne Madsen, who once claimed Wikileaks was a CIA operation, and that Al-Qaeda was a front for the military-industrial complex.
No other news organization is reporting the incident as part of a Chinese missile test at this time.
A much less sinister explanation is provided by a site called "Contrail Science".
According to a report at that site, the CBS camera crew probably captured Flight AWE808 from Hawaii to Phoenix, and the perspective of the the viewer made the contrail appear to be a ballistic missile being launched, possibly, from a submarine.

I just cannot see that dark of a color reflecting anything as bright as what I saw in the very few videos or pics. Unless it was a different aircraft. I don’t want to keep a shallow theory going, what I want is the minuscule individual points all adding up to reveal the truth.
Like watching a CSI show.
It could be the flight to Phoenix. My roommate and saw a plane with a contrail that looked straight up at about the right time here in Phoenix. Since a shape was visible it could not be a missile over the Atlantic 500 miles away . The CBS film however clearly showed a bright spot on the top of the contrail. Was this flame or the sun reflecting off the plane?
The flight doesn't take a direct line like that, the plane is vectored towards that area because that is the first landing opportunity if something goes wrong more than half way into the flight. 757 is ETOPS and has to fly a specific route. I have flown from Hawaii to Phoenix at least 2 dozen times, probably more, and that is where we intercept the mainland, every time. Drawing a direct line is not how air traffic works. If that were the case LA flights to Asia would be much longer, instead they go north to take advantage of the curve of the earth. It was an airplane, either a US 757, or a UPS MD-11, but it was a plane.
That is all I am doing. When I saw the video I knew it was a missile immediately. Since then everything I have picked up has been from hours of reading threads and linked source material. Separate the wheat from the chaff.
If the photographer was looking south/southwest towards Catalina and the object flew almost vertical and then veered to the right as in the film, then that confirms the photographers account that the object flew to the northwest.
That is one aspect of the video that was clear to me from the first viewing. It's headed away. Some don't think it's possible to have an accurate idea how fast it was traveling either from the small snippets of video and with the changing zoom levels. I do.
When you see contrails from overflying jets (that didn’t take off or land here in SoCal), they look like they are making a dome-shaped white curved line high up in the sky, and they are thin and white, sometimes puffing out a little in wind, but NEVER that thick, and NEVER such a vertical line seeming to come up from the sea.
If it IS just a contrail like everyone says, it’s a very very weird one to someone who sees them in that area all the time.
You have zero data to prove that it was a missile. And, we know that US808 was exactly where the contrail was, and the next day it was exactly where another contrail that looked like a missile was.
No proof, just yammering and paranoia.
So...have you got proof there was a contrail in exactly the same spot the next day that looked like a missile, or are you just yammering?

When I watched the shuttle launch from Merrit Island one thing that impressed me was just how long I was able to see the flight. It was just before dawn and I expected it be gone in a minute or so, ...it seemed like a good 4-5 minutes before I lost sight of of the flight. I may have gauged it wrong, it was a emotional moment for me as I was thunder shaken to my core.
About film. -— You would be amazed at how much information you can extrapolate from film if you carefully examine it. Many of the questions raised the last few days could be answered from the complete footage, I don’t expect we’ll ever see it.
Anyway, I was pleased to see the second video posted.
The videographer has been on John and Ken’s radio show several times talking about what he saw. He doesn’t know what it was, but he doesn’t think it looked like any contrail he’s ever seen. He saw a plane going by at the same time, videoed it as well (said it’s in his original video), and thinks THAT might have been the one out of Hawaii. He’s not a scientist and is not sure of what he saw, but he’s been flying in these copters doing his videos for the news, for 11 years. He does NOT think it was from a plane.
By the way, today that same copter (unless that station has more than one) had engine failure, made an emergency landing and sustained damage.
I have looked and looked for the original footage. I have never seen it anywhere.
I heard the videographer say live on the radio that he filmed for 10 minutes, and mention for people to look at something within his film, but where is this film???
You have a crappy video. Its head on and, it is telephoto, and its a 2d video of a 3d event.
The point is that the next day, same time, there was the same contrail, and its documented.
Now, if it was a rocket, where is an ionized gas cloud? I’ve seen plenty of launches, at night or sunset, when the rocket hits the ionosphere, it creates a glowing cloud that stays for 30-40 minutes.
Also, if this was a launch, it would have been visible from San Diego to Santa Barbara, yet no reports? Why? Because it was a contrail, when viewed from a different angle, it looks no different than any other contrail.
You have no proof of a missile, absolutely no proof. There were two planes in the area, and we know that contrails sometimes look like this, and there are plenty of pictures from many places.

Wow, now we need to know what direction the filming guy was facing when he shot that video. I thought he was facing to the west. To catch flight 808, he would have had to have been filming to the SOUTH.
However, he said that when he filmed the event, that there was a plane flying by to the left of his shot. That would have been to the south, if he had been filming west, like I believe he was.

That is my biggest problem with this whole thing, frankly. It is really making this look like a tin foil hat site.
If it were not for that, I’d really enjoy these threads for their comic relief.
