Mystery missile launch': Chinese missile test or airline contrail?

Hosted by imgur.comA report posted today at a CNN website claims the "mystery missile launch" on Monday was actually a Chinese missile test. According to the report:

China flexed its military muscle Monday evening in the skies west of Los Angeles when a Chinese Navy Jin class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, deployed secretly from its underground home base on the south coast of Hainan island, launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from international waters off the southern California coast. WMR’s intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia.

However, the report - placed on CNN's user-generated iReport site - has yet to be vetted or confirmed by CNN, and is full of un-named, unquoted sources. The only link provided goes to a site with basically the same report - again, with no corroboration.

The source of the report is one Wayne Madsen, who once claimed Wikileaks was a CIA operation, and that Al-Qaeda was a front for the military-industrial complex.

No other news organization is reporting the incident as part of a Chinese missile test at this time.

A much less sinister explanation is provided by a site called "Contrail Science".

According to a report at that site, the CBS camera crew probably captured Flight AWE808 from Hawaii to Phoenix, and the perspective of the the viewer made the contrail appear to be a ballistic missile being launched, possibly, from a submarine.

The site reports a very similar incident:

An interesting contrail cropped up off the coast of San Clemente, Orange County, California on December 31st 2009. The curious shape led.......

Now conspiracy theorists' posts on some blogsite are news sources and worthy of their own article.

Look, I found this and thought it made sense. Now if you can disprove it OK, but don't jump down my throat for posting it.

Notice how the contrails are bright with respect to the viewers side. Why do you think that is ?

Good post on #12 - thanks...

OTOH, I believe the 3 stooges would produce a more competent response than this administration could.

I believe this report to the deep!

What do you mean by that? I am confused. Did I miss something?

BS, first of all I believe that it is customary to tell other nations if you are going to be doing an ICBM/SLBM test launch. China isn't stupid enough to do this 35 miles from our shores anyway. If this was a missile launch, there would be alot of military activity from us afterward in the area. Even North Korea announces its test launches.

No Chinese or anyone else’s sub could ever get that close to our shore, much less launch a missile.

How soon we forget about the Chinese sub that popped up right in the middle of a US group of ships.

If the government wanted to cover it up, there would be no better way than simply claiming to have launched it themselves.

OK, but what would happen if those that actually launched it, decided to reveal proof they launched it?

lol

How bad would our government look then?

I don't know why this is so hard to believe, based on the fact we've left our borders wide open to millions, during the past 8 years of war....

Absolute nonsense. No Chinese or anyone else’s sub could ever get that close to our shore, much less launch a missile.

I beg to differ I think it would be real easy

If someone assigned me to do it I would start far to the
north and drift south with only enough power to provide
steerage and buoyancy control. You could be very stealthy. The hard part would be getting
the Hell out of Dodge afterword!

What part of it made sense to you? The Examiner reporting that some conspiracist moonbat with unnamed sources claims it's a Chinese missile in addition to his other claims that Al-Qaeda is a front for the US military industrial complex and Wikileaks is a CIA operation?

This couldn't have been posted in an existing insane 'Chinese Missile' thread?

A fleet of anti-submarine airplanes did *not* race out of San Diego to the potential launch site. ... Does this behaviour match an unannounced missile launch by an unknown party, or does it match an optical illusion?

See my #16 he said, throwing gasoline on the fire. And to quote Dr. Strangelove, "Of course, the whole point of a Doomsday Machine is lost, if you *keep* it a *secret*! Why didn't you tell the world, EH?" And so it would be with a launch demonstration. Consider that the Chinese did the Japanese one better and got the message to the President before 1 PM Eastern on Dec 7th, taking the sneak (or secret) out of the attack (or launch), and specifically warning about the consequences of having the Pacific fleet go batchit?

Just a thought and what makes this such a terrifyingly fun discussion.

You're absolutely correct of course......more than a few FReepers have been totally embarrassing themselves (let alone this site) with their hysteria nonsense.

I've lived along this coast and long ago became accustomed to visual weirdness in the offshore coastal skies....unfortunately we've got a ton of whacked out conspiracy-theorist goofballs posting here. Really kinda sad. The mods need to knock this stuff in the head before the next FReepathon. This place could quicklike become a joke.

True. I live in Seattle, where we have three airports and two military fields. I see contrails all the time, but rarely, if ever, see only one, especially of such a significant nature.

This is indeed a good comment, but it dashes water upon the firestorm of conspiracies, of potential movies and also the techno-thrillers being written.

I can easily believe it was just an optical illusion but just like anti-birthers and Palin haters there is just a lot of people stuck on a theory like a pit bull with a chew toy soaked in superglue.

If this was a missile launch, there would be alot of military activity from us afterward in the area.

And you expect to see that activity live on CNN ? Hey, what do you think that would be, the Invasion of Iraq :>

It was obviously a missle. Notice how rough, or turbulent the plume was. There is little or no turbulence above 29,000 feet where contrails are formed, so they are much smoother than a rocket plume. That thing was a large rocket.
