Mystery missile launch': Chinese missile test or airline contrail?

Hosted by imgur.comA report posted today at a CNN website claims the "mystery missile launch" on Monday was actually a Chinese missile test. According to the report:

China flexed its military muscle Monday evening in the skies west of Los Angeles when a Chinese Navy Jin class ballistic missile nuclear submarine, deployed secretly from its underground home base on the south coast of Hainan island, launched an intercontinental ballistic missile from international waters off the southern California coast. WMR’s intelligence sources in Asia, including Japan, say the belief by the military commands in Asia and the intelligence services is that the Chinese decided to demonstrate to the United States its capabilities on the eve of the G-20 Summit in Seoul and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Tokyo, where President Obama is scheduled to attend during his ten-day trip to Asia.

However, the report - placed on CNN's user-generated iReport site - has yet to be vetted or confirmed by CNN, and is full of un-named, unquoted sources. The only link provided goes to a site with basically the same report - again, with no corroboration.

The source of the report is one Wayne Madsen, who once claimed Wikileaks was a CIA operation, and that Al-Qaeda was a front for the military-industrial complex.

No other news organization is reporting the incident as part of a Chinese missile test at this time.

A much less sinister explanation is provided by a site called "Contrail Science".

According to a report at that site, the CBS camera crew probably captured Flight AWE808 from Hawaii to Phoenix, and the perspective of the the viewer made the contrail appear to be a ballistic missile being launched, possibly, from a submarine.

The site reports a very similar incident:

An interesting contrail cropped up off the coast of San Clemente, Orange County, California on December 31st 2009. The curious shape led.......

My bad. The flight finder is actually set for 4:45 PM PST not 5. That means it was supposed to be right over Catalina a half hour before the video was shot. But it doesn’t seem likely that it was there at all with a NOTAM in effect.

I too would like to see the 10min video in the full .M2T or HD422 resolution. Unfortunately the video is owned by CBS and not the camera man.

The videographer did say he filmed until the event disappeared. When a jet flying towards you disappears it would pass over you. The object was moving away, this is clear to me by looking at lens performance during the available video.

Good questions. I don't know the exact jet stream pattern at the time but there was a cold front moving in from the Pacific that had reached the eastern slope of the Rockies by that hour. It was definitely cold and full of humidity.

When I went outside that evening it was in the form of snow. That would seem to indicate that great contrail forming conditions existed from off of the coast to about 700 miles inland. All the way to Phoenix at least.

This guy has been a left wing nutcase for many years.

Precisely why you leak the story to him. Most of the time he was wrong.

My gut feeling is that this is all a remarkable set of visual acts of trickery.

But my sense of self preservation combined with the overall political dangers and signs of weakness being potrayed like a burlesque show by our POTUS has indeed created a scenario of suspicious circumstances.

While its possible for a sub to launch that close the CONUS it absolutely cannot escape, it could kill itself and dive deep into an underwater canyon though, and never be found.

Our enemies know not reason, only a dying conviction to kill us, or make us divided. What did this really accomplish?

I would keep an eye on the movements of the Glomar Explorer unless its been broken up, or ANY deep water salvage vessel in that area.

And also any NOTAMS that seem to be “different”.

I still think it was a US sub, I think it may have been an accident, or done for other reasons, like a shoot down of an unfriendly or dangerous satellite?

I don’t have access to the bit by bit frames and computer enhanced imagery but it certainly looked like a missile launch, buy why no action from NORAD? If the Navy was called to suddenly shoot down a sudden immediate orbital threat I seriously doubt they will tell us why or what it was.

We too could have secret orbital nuke missiles in space, missiles that MAY have been compromised by hacking?

That ought to keep this thread alive for another hundred posts!

Here is the best pic I could find of a US Airway B752 which is what flight 808 is.

Unless the APU is sending out a 100 foot long plume of flame I seriously doubt the underbelly paint will reflect anything as bright as whats in the video.

This pic is saying a lot, many thanks!

(For those that don’t know, the Aux Power Unit APU, sits in the very tail of the fuselage)

First of all, if you look at a map and draw a direct line between Honolulu and Phoenix, the first place that line touches the North American continent is the very northern part of Baja California.

The great circle course from HNL to PHX crosses the coast around Delmar CA.

And with a large helo heading for the launch location fast, it looks like a hurried effort the neutralize a sub.

So that was a large Helo headed to launch point ? Last night someone speculated it was an F16. It does look like a Helo. Would be better if it was the Iranians. We can handle them. The Chinese are another story. And if it was the Chinese we should assume they used a Nork sub with one of their missiles.

Is it possible that the US just tested its first super sonic cruise missile ? Headed out at a low angle to the west. Needed some sunlight to film its operation ? Wonder it it was a successful test ? Just speculating.

Joint SuperSonic Cruise Missile (JSSCM)

In April 2002 the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) solicited information from missile system integrators and other interested parties on technology available for a transformational approach to providing an affordable Supersonic Cruise Missile (SSCM) Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD). The SSCM ACTD will culminate in a technology demonstration of a supersonic cruise missile system capable of functionally disabling time sensitive Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) targets, hardened and deeply buried WMD targets, or both. Time sensitive WMD targets are broadly classified as those posing imminent threat of conducting or supporting hostile attack (or re-attack) on U.S. or allied forces or civilian population centers. Government sponsorship of the SSCM ACTD includes DTRA, the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD), and the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV), with additional international participation.

Key performance parameters for the SSCM ACTD include but are not limited to: (a) terminal accuracy of 3 meters Circular Error Probable (CEP) or better, excluding Target Location Error (good weather, no jamming); (b) a range of at least 400 nautical miles with a goal of at least 600 nautical miles; (c) a cruising speed of at least Mach 3.5 with a goal of Mach 4.5 or better; (d) for any air-launched demonstration variant, a maximum all-up-round launch weight of less than 2000 lbs. with a goal of 1800 lbs.; (e) warhead penetration capability of at least 10 meters with a goal of 15 meters or better through 5 ksi concrete; (f) soft target kill capability and bio-defeat fill compatibility; and (g) a strike planning, preparation, and launch duration, from receipt of target coordinates for mission planning to physical weapon release/exit from the launch platform, of less than 6 minutes.

Very interesting information. Thanks for replying. You’re obviously a lot more savvy about this than I. I just try to use common sense. If I understand what you are saying correctly, if the flight would normally be over Catalina at 4:45pm, then it should have already been well over the city by 5:15 when the footage was filmed, but since the NOTAM was in effect, it was unlikely the flight was anywhere in the area? I find it interesting that the NOTAM was issued and then the gov’t denies there was anything going on in the area.

Another thing I find interesting: I believe I read that the helicopter was in the Santa Monica or Palisades area when the film was made. If the photographer was looking south/southwest towards Catalina and the object flew almost vertical and then veered to the right as in the film, then that confirms the photographers account that the object flew to the northwest.

We need to get the flight directions of that flight, what was its rate of climb, what was its airspeed, what was the point of apex for the cruise. Most aircraft actually climb up and then throttle back for the best altitude, plus one does have to remember the earth isn’t flat either.

So aircraft are actually flying from a perspective of a person on the ground a parabolic flight pattern. They climb up and throttle down.

Now anyone with more detailed info please stand up now, I’m not that knowledgeable but that is what I have heard.

Keep throwing out things that have nothing to do with this. Focus. You have zero data to prove that it was a missile. And, we know that US808 was exactly where the contrail was, and the next day it was exactly where another contrail that looked like a missile was.

No proof, just yammering and paranoia.

I don't really have an opinion on whose missile it was or what it was intended to do. Just a few speculations here and there. I can see plausible stories for several actors and reasons in all cases for denial from the DoD.

Supposing it was a foreign missile one explanation for not firing on it might be that we saw it was headed away from CONUS immediately drew the conclusion that it wasn't a threat and let it go.

The best speculation I have read is that one of our subs had a leaking missile and had to unload it fast. If we see anomalies that hint at failure in flight that fits. The PR embarrassment of an unintended launch of a hot missile on our coastline. Bad timing for 0bambi if that's all it was. lol

Thank you. But a ten minute video would likely not shed any more light on this other than some data on atmospheric shear as the smoke trail dissipates. The object generating the exhaust trail, moving almost straight away from the camera, would be half way across the Pacific once ten minutes elapsed. Not much a news camera could see there. The first minute tells whatever story a single hand-held camera can tell. The 'who' and 'why' parts of the story confound, but the 'what' was recorded pretty well.

A hot missile that had to be aborted? I would think it would have had a self destruct after so much altitude. If it was an errant shot from a boomer then if anything I would think they either want it vaporized or easily recovered.

The theory of a super sonic tube launched or vertical launched cruise missile certainly is interesting. was it a test, or was it a message? Or both?

Shhh. We want the sheeple to keep thinking it was a plane. Certainly do not want any panic. Look, there is an Aluminum ring around the engine. That is where the light reflected from.
