OVER THE HORIZON: Something bright and active on the far side of the sun is about to turn toward Earth. Magnetic loops towering over the eastern limb herald its approach:
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory took this picture during the early hours of July 26th. The bright glow revealed by SDO's extreme ultraviolet camera comes from million-degree plasma trapped by overlying magnetic fields. A sunspot is likely at the bottom of it all.
Or maybe two sunspots... NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft is stationed over the sun's eastern limb, and it sees a pair of active regions approaching single file. The one peeking over the limb now is actually the smaller of the two. Readers with solar telescopes should train their optics here.

KEYWORDS: astronomy; catastrophism; solaractivity; sunspots

If we do get blasted bad enough, being on the dark side will help for a very short while.

You know our frequent survivalist threads will pick up on this.
Freepers won't just make laconic statements like "I'm investing in lead, lots of lead..."
They'll say "Yeah I'm buying lead. A two-foot thick wall of it."

Being on the dark side would save us, but could you live in a world without Australia?

Just marking this thread in case of TEOTWAWKI. Or even TEOTW!
Maybe this means I don’t need to mow the lawn today... I better stay inside and FReep all day instead.

Let me get this right. The feed from the solar satellite that is
specifically monitoring this bright object that is just coming over the edge of the Sun has just gone off line?
Well I don't know why I suddenly have this sudden feeling of stark dread.

One of my favorite Twilight Zones (or one of those other shows) was the one with I think Burgess Merideth as a bookish guy in New York. He figures out what is causing the moon to be so blood red that night. Calls his buddy in Toyko and just gets static on the line to confirm it.
Finally works up his courage to ask the librarian for dinner at his place as they wait for dawn.

If the 3d cam satellite is just sending us this information, would it be a good guess that the solar flare activity is past the horizon now. ?

Forget the world ending. The important question for us ham radio geeks is, will this finally open up the twenty-meter band again?

That's correct. I was shrieking dire prophecies about the solar wind, which is estimated to move ~ 7500 times slower than the speed of light.
A gamma-ray shock from e.g. a Super Nova would lethally irradiate us with absolutely no warning (unless we observed the Super Nova 'warming up'.)
But a super-intense particle sleet from our own sun would give us some warning. Enough to get a round of golf in, and then board Air Force One.
Which is a point BTW. People on jet-planes may be able to completely avoid the particle effects of a flare by staying ahead of the earth's rotation. Which means that the only survivors of a world-ending flare would be the Obamas and a crop of sycophantic White House journalists.
The horror!

If there was e.g. a solar flare that was going to destroy all life: wed have ~ 40 hours warning of the oncoming proton shock. So this nebbish and this biker are discussing the end of the world in a bar.
The nebbish asks the biker, so what would you do if you knew we only had 40 hours of warning that we were going to be destroyed?
The biker says he'd hop on the first thing that moved and screw it to death, what would you do???
The nebbish thinks a moment and says I'd stand perfectly still...

The real questions America’s dying to answer: Will Lindsey Lohan get out of jail in time for the after party? And waht’s “Bo the First Dog’s” favorite ice cream?
