BP Official Admits to Damage BENEATH THE SEA FLOOR
washingtonsblog.com ^ | Saturday, June 12, 2010

As I noted Tuesday, there is growing evidence that BP's oil well - technically called the "well casing" or "well bore" - has suffered damage beneath the level of the sea floor.

The evidence is growing stronger and stronger that there is substantial damage beneath the sea floor. Indeed, it appears that BP officials themselves have admitted to such damage. This has enormous impacts on both the amount of oil leaking into the Gulf, and the prospects for quickly stopping the leak this summer.

On May 31st, the Washington Post noted:

Sources at two companies involved with the well said that BP also discovered new damage inside the well below the seafloor and that, as a result, some of the drilling mud that was successfully forced into the well was going off to the side into rock formations.

"We discovered things that were broken in the sub-surface," said a BP official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. He said that mud was making it "out to the side, into the formation."

Thank you for the informative post, yet I’m obliged to take exception for the opinion about oilmen lying - some of us on the forum are oilmen, and work very hard to maintain integrity in a rough business. I am sure there are liars in every business including the oil business, but not everyone in the oil business is a liar.

The engineers at the company where I work believe that the casing parted at some distance below the sea floor, so the wellbore is no longer fully cased.

No, the saw ‘blade’ was a diamond impregnated cable. It could not have closed off the flow.

You were saying ...

I am sure there are liars in every business including the oil business, but not everyone in the oil business is a liar.

I would sure hope that would be the case ... :-)

I’m thousands of miles away, and a decade or so out of the came, but I still know the game, and I doubt there are many “castings” that are fracturre critical below the deck. Yes, the steel drill casing below grade loses ductility in the temps and pressures we’re talikinag about, but not like you seem to me to be describing.

Obama may use this “crisis” as an excuse to declare martial law, evacuate the Gulf coast to FEMA camps (especially if hurricanes), and suspend November elections in order to keep control of Congress and pursue his “death to America” policies.

imagine a huge meteror hitting in the gulf...around the dinosaur era....

this has happened before...just no recorded history

But it did leave evidence...

If this post is close to factual, there are some US Government politicians who should be summarily executed.

The US GOvernment should have gotten ALL AVAILABLE drilling rings to start drilling relief wells to tap theis resevoir and begin relieving pressure. As far as I can tell, only BP had 2 releif wells being drilled , and last I heard, one of them was diverted to work on something else.

When you start talking “Sea floor caving in” I get pretty sceptical. Were talking about 10,000 feet of earth. That is 2 miles deep. i have a hard time believing that the ocean floor will collapse due to this.

Interesting information, but must be taken with a grain of salt.

Yes, I agree that this scenario is possible. Just a what if scenario here, but if a hurricane comes along and spreads this crude and toxic dispersant all over everything, or if that dispersant does become gaseous and is rained out over land, I am leaving right away, I will not wait to be evacuated. I am already of the opinion that we are looking at a major event here.

There are reports that pressures might be from 20 to 70 thousand PSI. If true, nothing we’ve got can stop it.

Pray for our planet.>i/>

The Democratic Party has determined that we need to separate God from politics.
BP can't stop the gusher and neither can Obama. Despite Obama's hope for change, we ARE a Christian nation, and it might be time for our leader to admit that we are helpless without God's help and LEAD our nation in prayer.

I"ll tell you he's earn respect from the Right if he did.... of course he'd annoy the left so that option is out. It's up to the professing Christians in the country to offer up prayers for God's immediate intervention Unless and until we ask God for help, God help us.

If I may speak for Chris, this is a game changer. I’m sure deepwater drillibg will become harder for compaines. More rules, more regs.

It won’t just change the deepwater game, it will change (note: destroy) nearshore and land drilling as well. he administration will now easuly, and with popular support, severe restrict all petrochemical drilling.

Our economy is very dependant on petrochemicals.

0bama has found his method to effectively kill the USA as we knew it, and will now be easily, and with popular support, be able to turn the USA into an at least 51% dependant or government employee nation.

We’re fu@ked.

This little “disasater” did it

Why else whould 0bama refuse the help from 17 nations?

Why else would obama refuse to release the full force and fury of our very capable USCG and National Guard?

Why else would obama wait 50+ days to meet wuitht he CEO of BP?

You are right - my engineer friend’s suspicion is that the casing string parted at one of the cross-over assemblies as the casing string tapers down from a larger diameter to a more narrow diameter at depth. If they had a bad cement job, there could be a mechanical shift/jolt sufficient to part or shear the casing off of elements in the cross-over assembly, or disconnect a key element in it. Or maybe the whole thing parted and including the surface casing string and got shoved upward - if the surface string casing hangers got shoved up into the BOPs it would explain why they failed to close the blind rams - no way to penetrate such heavy steel even with the rams. I imagine there has been some casing collapse too downhole given the loss of control issues around the completion and well blowout when they displaced mud to seawater.

Best chance to control is to intersect the reservoir with relief wells and frac the reservoir massively with cement.

The releif wells are not for ‘pumping oil out’ - they are for plugging the well with heavy mud and then concrete.

I don’t plan to argue that, but as a former coastie, I know we could control what emenates far fetter than we currently are, especially with foreighn help, if only our president would allow that, but it appears he’s HOPING for maximum damage.

That’s sick & disgusting!
