They're just all slimy and gross. I like most other veggies, but Brussells sprouts are disgusting.
Okra is delicious when fried properly. Otherwise they are a slimy boogerfilled mess.
I make what I call “Popcorn Okra” and I cut it into small pieces, dredge the pieces a dry mix of 3/4 flour, 1/4 cornmeal, salt and pepper. Put in hot skillet (filled about 1/2 inch with grease) and fry till golden brown. Then drain on paper towel like usual with fried stuff.
Yummy and not slimy at all!
And BY GOD you will finish it!
I always got a doggie bag for my entire entrée.
My fat butt is glad the restaurant is no longer around, but my belly is not.
Yeah I know, that should read due verses do.
HELL YEAH!!!!
Half them—then Stir fry or roast them in olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and parmesan cheese. Yummy.
Yummy!
(Of course anything is tasty when deep fried)
Mmmmm brussel sprouts are delish when young and tender.
I’ll tell you what’s gross and slimy: OKRA
Wasn’t there a B film in the in the early 60’s about a BS that was subjected to nuclear radiation called “The Brussel Sprout That Ate Pittsburgh”?
*Maybe I dreamt it after a dinner of lima beans*
Now, if I'm going to deep-fry something, it's going to be a Snickers bar.
Or bacon.
I guess anything cooked with butter is good. lol
And they had long, family-style tables and it was all home cooking.
That's all familiar. What was that place called again?
Potato Patch
We will fry the Snickers bar and deep six the Brussels sprouts.
Now where did I leave the donut breading and fudge sauce?
I love fried green tomatoes but I only eat them once or twice a week as our tomatoes are ripening. I typically eat very healthfully but I need my bacon fat fix every now and then to fortify my Southern blood.:)
You do realize that your reaction to brussel sprouts is due to your inherited ability to taste 6-n-propylthiouracil. Those of us who can taste the substance find brussel sprouts (and cauliflower, and if the ability is acute broccoli and cabbage) revolting. Folks who are blessed with the inability to taste the stuff find these vegetables pleasant, but their cooking tips are not to any avail in making those vegetables palatable to those of us who can taste 6-n-propylthiouracil.
I like broccoli, unless it is overcooked (even slightly) when it becomes revolting with a similar nasty taste and scent to brussels sprouts, and have found a single cauliflower dish—which involves steaming it then stewing it in a very hot tomato-based curry until it’s limp—that I can enjoy. But brussel sprouts are irredeemable.
I prefer broccoli and cauliflower raw. I'll eat it lightly steamed, but boiled is out of the question.
Same thing with cabbage. I detest boiled cabbage in spite of the fact that my heritage is almost all Irish. ;-)
I'll eat raw cabbage in things, but when it's boiled, it's just disgusting.
Thank you for the very interesting information!
mmmm.. Brussels Sprouts... my favorite food.
It sounds like you haven’t had them made correctly if they are ‘all slimy and gross’.
Try this (doesn’t work with frozen). Cut them in half. Quickly blanch them. Put them in a casserole dish. Toss with toasted walnuts, salt and pepper, and put a good Gorgonzola cheese all over it. Put it under the broiler until the cheese is bubbly and golden..
In the UK they call it Rocket. Gives it a cool factor.
The majority of the time I have to get my green tomatoes from the grocery store. It never fails that the cashier will ask me “what is this?”, followed by “you know they are not ripe”. Once or twice I have responded with “damn this color blindness”.
