Obama and the Auto Companies, or, The Toyota Controlla

When Barack Obama led the charge to nationalize some of the auto companies in addition to the banks, a lot of people saw it as merely a sop to his friends in the unions. Recall that most of the unions in the United States now work for the government; very few private-sector industries are unionized, and perhaps the auto unions are important as the automobile represents a true American Icon. But there appear to be several other, less savory motives at work.

First, there is the element of the socialist dream of control -- not just of the economy, but of peoples’ mobility. It is not for nothing that a certain, ahem, National Socialist built the autobahns (even before the US interstate highway system) and pioneered the “people’s car.”

Second, the takeover of GM dovetailed well with the attack on the banking system -- besides gaining control of the banks, the rule of law was trampled underfoot in the name of progressivism, as existing bondholders were shoved aside and their rightful claim to the assets given to others. (How’s that ‘from each according to his means” working out for all of you sophisticates, by the way?)

And there another item, more personally related to Obama. The Chicago way, perhaps? Recall how Obama obtained his position in the U.S. Senate, a necessary stepping stone to attempt a run at the Presidency. That’s right, he cleared the field by any means necessary. And how was that? Oh, that’s right -- somebody (we still don’t know who, or how) -- managed to have the SEALED divorce records of his opponent, the husband of Jeri Ryan (the actress who played “Seven of Nine” from Star Trek: The Next Generation), opened up and distributed to the public and to a press out for scandal. [*]

Which indicates several things: first, that Obama has powerful friends, who are willing to go “the extra mile” for him; and possibly, that these friends had plans for Obama in advance, and getting him into office is just the next step in the program. And, no, I’m not going all black helicopter / tin-foil hat about this. How many other races for the US Senate have their been where sealed court records have been used to dump a sitting US Senator in favor of a *nobody*?

So, it’s clear that Obama plays for keeps; and there’s a good bet that there are people behind him who are playing for keeps too.

So what else can we learn from the treatment of the auto industry?

Look at what is happening to another auto company, out of Obama’s direct reach. A company which is not only foreign-owned, but (shudder!) non-union to boot! TOYOTA. Remember how they’ve been in the news lately? Oh, yes. A high-speed accident involving a stuck accelerator, and the death of a family. (But it was a loaner car, with an odd ignition control, which the driver hadn’t fully mastered. That both deepens the tragedy and makes the aftermath more despicable. “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”) Not content with forcing a recall -- the sharks smell blood. Now even Toyota’s political ace-in-the-hole, the trendy, lib-friendly, and green Prius has severe problems. How convenient -- for Obama, for the unions, for the cause of state control.

Just one factor here is being overlooked.

Remember when Obama’s backers were mentioned? One of Obama’s ideological heroes Saul Alinsky, and his masterwork “Rules for Radicals,” make a cameo appearance. Alinsky was an early “community organizer” just like Obama. And one of his rules is as follows:

”Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.”

But it’s not just Toyota who is at risk. Take a step back. The treatment of Toyota -- call it the Toyota Controlla -- is the very modus operandi of the Obama White House, and by extension, of the entire federal bureaucracy under his control.

Toyota isn’t the end -- it is merely Obama’s Guernica for testing the Alinsky blitzkrieg against corporate targets.

Imagine what Obama will do if he ever passes healthcare “reform.”

Death Panels, anyone?

[*] Go ahead and post gorgeous pictures of her in response. But don’t forget this started out as a serious political commentary. :-)

Here is the story Rush was talking about about the Unions pressuring Toyota before all these stories were made up:

This is out there. Try googling: “Unions Pressure Toyota” and check out the timeline. It is really surprising the MSM hasn’t picked up on this...

It was the Chicago Tribune.

"Attorneys for the Tribune and WLS-Ch. 7 sought release of the records, but the Ryans had fought disclosure because they said it could harm their son. The Ryans decided not to appeal Schnider's ruling."
