Knock It Off, Free Republic!
XenoHistoran ^ | 12/1/09 | XenoHistorian

Posted on 12/02/2009 9:21:09 AM PST by pissant

I have been a minor participant at Free Republic, the Internet’s leading conservative forum, since September 2004. An online friend referred me to a discussion where members of Free Republic were talking about the 1952 and 1956 presidential elections, and using my maps from this page to make a point. I had to join FR to introduce myself to that group, and thank them for visiting. Because that was right after the “Rathergate” scandal, I thus became one of the “Pajamahadeen” that had just brought down the Sauronic eye of CBS.

Being a “Freeper” has been an interesting and fun experience, but I am disturbed by a current trend on those boards. For the past few weeks, at least since the latest fundraising drive ended, I have noticed that every new thread begins with a picture or video reminding us that Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and presidential candidate, supports abortion. It doesn’t matter what the topic is, the anti-Mitt material pops up.

Personally, I think our current priorities ought to be making sure President Obama and his leftist pals don’t force their health care plan down our throats, and defeating as many moonbats as possible in next year’s congressional and gubernatorial elections, especially Harry Reid, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd and Slobbering Barney Frank. Then in 2011 or 2012 we can fight over who we want for the presidency. Consequently, yesterday I posted the following on the Kentucky board:

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of the Mitt Romney bashing that goes on at the beginning of each new thread? Granted, he may not be conservative enough for most of us (my first choice for 2012 would probably be Sarah Palin or Duncan Hunter), but he just HAS to be better than the Chicago mob that rules Washington now. Somebody ought to tell Jim Robinson that BHO and his cabal are the real enemy, not Mitt. Sheesh, an outside observer looking at us now is probably getting the impression that Republicans eat their own. And as for Mitt Romney being a Mormon, well, I’m more concerned about Harry Reid’s Mormon faith. Does he HAVE any?

Four replies have appeared since then, and only one agrees with me. The others just said we ought to do whatever we can to make Mitt Romney unelectable. I guess I’m going to take a timeout from Free Republic. Hopefully the Freepers will be acting more sensibly when I return. ’Bye, see you guys next year.

This pinhead is unwilling to spot his own contradiction here. Mitt should be out in public citing Romneycare as a bad example to follow. Instead, he's touting it as a success, so Mitt is actually HELPING the Dems here with gathering support for their healthcare monstrosity.

C'mon Jim! Why can't you just settle for the lesser of two evils strategy?

8 years of Bush is all I can take from a phony "conservative". What a wasted opportunity ! Next time around we need a committed Constitutionalist, even if for only 4 years. It will set the tone for a generation of governance, IMO.

When Romney was governor of a liberal state he governed as a liberal in many respects. When he went national he had to clean that up to appeal to a republican primary base.

He is “more” conservative than a democrat and he talks a conservative game now, but it raises lots of questions about his character and conviction.

IMHO if he were to get the nomination he will get my vote over Obama just as McCain did. Obama is the most left wing president we’ve ever had. But I hope we have a better choice like Palin, Thune, Cheney (either one), etc.

Seems to me Jim has been consistent in opposing RINO’s like Romney and Rudy, and it’s Jim’s site.

To say that Jim Robinson is no fan of Mitt Romney would be an understatement. Since this is his site, then he’s free to make any sort of editorial comment he wants to and we are free to agree or disagree. I, for one, have never seen any sort if indication that Romney supporters are purged or suppressed in any way.

A friend of a friend grew up under "my house, my rules" parents. When he was on his own, he had them stay at his house. He served them M&M's for breakfast, saying "Be sure to eat the green ones...they're really good for you."

Nope. Any other questions?

The Romney vampire needs to have a stake driven through its heart or else it will continue to plague the GOP. Mitt Romney is the poster child for RINOs--liberals who pretend to be conservative just to garner votes.

If we want real change, those types need to be removed from leadership. If they want to support the party and the conservative base, fine. Otherwise, get ye gone!

Here’s a serious answer to your serious concern.

What we’ve learned is that if we elect a conservative in name, but not in philosophy, we do actually worse than if we elect a man like Obama.

Obama’s having the desired effect: Independents regret it, the young have disappeared, conservatives are being elected over moderates. The left can’t be honest about its positions, especially as they are applied, because they not only defy logic, they are at their base immoral.

Romney’s ‘conservative’ imprimatur is now all over the Massachusetts health care system, and now it is the ‘GOP’s idea’.

For the last 12 or so years, the GOP has basically told conservatives, “Where you gonna go? Democrat?” The strategy has now failed, and they are starting (just starting) to learn an old lesson: Conservatism works, where ever it is tried.

I think it is better for Romney to take on the more appropriate label of Moderate Liberal, since that’s in fact where he is. In my opinion, FR’s been cleaning house on moderism for the last couple of months, and its a good thing.

The Party needs to be reminded of their platform, because its clear they abandoned it. Whether intentionally or not is another conversation, and probably not a relevant one here.

If you have to go, then chances are you more identified with a ‘Third Way’ than with orthodox conservatism anyway. Sorry to see you go, but I’m not sure you are going to find what you seek somewhere else.

The OP(formerly the GOP), including Mitt are not one of our own. This is a Conservative website, not an OP website.
