Here is a brief statement made by Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on a civil suit filed against him by a woman who claims he raped her. He said he did no such thing, and promised to fight the allegation, but to stay focused on football. . . . . (Watch Video)

Hi ReneeLynn;

No, I clearly said, and you’d noticed had you read clearly, that I’m INCLINED TO BELIEVE the woman. I’m admitting off the bat that I’m biased against Roethlisberger. Had you read further, you’d noticed that I later said that my personal dislike didn’t matter, and the case should be decided on the facts.

Similarly, people who do like Mr. Roethlisberger should realize that their liking shouldn’t matter either. The cheering posts of several posters seem to forget that basic fact.

P.S. Yes I called him an—let’s rephrase—”human natural waste disposal device”. I chose clarity over manners—in retrospect I shouldn’t have done that, because it tends to be seen as a provocation to begin a flame war. Apologies to my fellow posters.

I get really sick of people who can’t backup what they’ve posted who then turn around and accuse me of not reading their post.

So, you have no basis for believing Ben to be guilty. As in innocent till proven guilty. Or for thinking he’s an a*****e. None. Ah. Well, thanks for sharing?

Hi MarineBrat:

It is a statement of my dislike. As I pointed out, it is most in his demeanor than in anything else—and so it needs no elaboration. Do I need to give a presentation of why I dislike Ben Roethlisberger and provide citations in the approved MLA style? Perhaps references to peer-reviewed medical journals are called for....

HE DOESN’T COME ACROSS WELL. Seems arrogant and abrassive. That’s pretty much what people mean by *******.

I agree with you. I don’t know anyone (who uses reasoning) who thinks there’s legs to this story.

Also a Ravens fan who hates the Steelers. I do HOPE he didn’t do this. I am wondering about the lack of criminal charges. Makes me think he didn’t do it.

No need, though a reduction in sarcasm would be nice. Now that you've elaborated that this is your opinion, I'm satisfied.

Actually RenneLynn, I get tired of people who don’t have the first knowledge of logic and don’t bother analyzing A) what you first write or B) your clarification of their misunderstanding of what you first write.

Saying I don’t like Ben Roethlisberger needs no “backup”; it needs an explanation, which I have provided.

Two other things:

1) I wrote that I was inclined to believe the woman. This is not to say that I believe him to be guilty—I won’t believe it one way or the other until I analyze the evidence, one way or the other. (If I ever bother going through the evidence, which most likely I won’t, since my time is limited.) To assert bias towards one position doesn’t imply that one is committed to that position.

Using your logic, why do you believe the woman is falsely accusing “Ben” of rape?

2) You mention the catchphrase “innocent until proving guilty”. You are omitting the most important part. The whole phrase is a reference to English common law, in which the accused is assumed innocent until proven guilty IN A COURT OF LAW. This only applies to criminal law; in the case of civil law, only the “preponderance of evidence” standard is used. (That may be why the woman is suing and not accusing; the standard of evidence is lower in civil court.)

Neither one applies to what every thinking person should do. Each individual is free to believe as he pleases—whether for good reasons or bad, that’s another matter.

We'll never know exactly what happened in that room, but I think even if it wasn't rape per se, it does speak to the unbridled hubris of professional athletes.

Just like in the Bryant case, it's telling that these athletes are so indulged in every other facet of life (and usually have been since adolescence) that they feel empowered or enabled to have consensual sex with women, who are working, that they've just met in their hotel rooms. How many people on this board have ordered room service or linens to their hotel room and ended up having sex with woman that delivered the items while she was still on duty? I'm guessing not to many.

You write a lot, but you say the same things.

You came here as if you had some personal experience of Ben by calling him an a*****e. Then your only reason for believing this woman was that you didn’t like Ben’s demeanor. Whatever that means.

So, drop the long winded posts. It reminds me of an Obama speech.

I believe this woman to be bogus because she did not file a police complaint. This supposedly happened a year ago. She’s suing FIVE fellow employess who are taking Ben’s side for defamation. In other words, they didn’t back her up in her claims. And she’s known as being a bit ‘off’ mentally.

And I don’t believe for a second that Ben doesn’t have women who are just lined up to sleep with him. As this one did. Now, a year later, she claims rape. It’s bogus, it stinks to high heaven.

If it happens enough that you get tired of it, maybe your writing style doesn't accurately express what you're really trying to say? Just sayin'...

You initially said....

"To be clear, I’m INCLINED to believe the woman, because Mr. Roethlisberger is such an a******."

Which led me to logically conclude that you were intimating that you had some information about BR that would lead an uninvolved 3rd party to believe that he's an a*. You spoke as a statement of fact. It wasn't until after the fact that you elaborated that this was your opinion.
