If the Dems voted for it I’m sure it won’t work and there is something else they are trying to get out of this “deal”. You have tunnels and other ways to get in to the USA....a fence simply won’t do much.
A fence is a nice big visible thing for a politician to point to and say ‘look, we did something.’ It doesn’t do anything about people already here illegally or who continue to come on tourist or student visas and overstay illegally.

Thank you Jim DeMint!
Although I am a big fan of De Mint, that was a very annoying tweet. He says they passed the amendment, but to what legislation does the amendment pertain? Is this an authorizing bill, or an appropriation? More information, please.
True that it does nothing for people that are already here, but keeping more out is a necessary first step and fences are proven to do the trick.
The aim of the fence is to delay, delay enough for the sensors and observation points to detect illegals and dispatch Border Patrol Agents to intercept.
A fence is part of a multi-layed approach to border security.
Tunnels are primarily used for drug smuggling, not illegal alien transport. Risking a tunnel for illegal aliens is not something that is cost-productive.
But... two fences with minefields in between would work very well.
Or even those who bring a ladder or a rope with a grappling hook to climb over if the Dems sneak through a cut in the Border Patrol's budget for guarding the fence or even if an Obama appointee tells them to stop aggressive patrols.
The fence only works when guarded.
Of course you are right about those who already are here. They have tried to take some measures to track the overstays, but not enough. They are working on a system that would better track them. But the fence, where they have built pedestrian fence, does an excellent job of keeping people out. I think (and hope) what De Mint is trying to accomplish is to make DHS go back and build pedestrian fence in the places where they built vehicle barriers last year. There are more than 600 miles of fence, but much of it is vehicle fence, not the extremely effective pedestrian fence.
True, it slows down or deters a big chunk of those coming by land. I’m just wary that politicians will try to say they solved the problem when they’ve only started to fix a small part.
“A fence is a nice big visible thing for a politician to point to and say look, we did something. It doesnt do anything about people already here illegally or who continue to come on tourist or student visas and overstay illegally.”
You are correct, of course.
And the trick is to keep moving forward on all fronts and do what is politically possible.
Congress should not be allowed to let the continutation of the fence relax its action on total application of E-Verify, STIFF sanctions on employers, lease prohibitions relative to federally funded housing, etc.; and as you suggest, tourist and student tracking.
Winston Churchill said it right: “We will fight them on...”

I am hopeful DeMint really believes this will help. He is one of the good guys like Inhofe.
Merely not giving multiple appeals to an illegal alien in boston public housing would be a more cost effective deterrent to current and future illegal entry/overstaying.
The Obama economy will take care of those already here.
Zero will probably veto it.
If this ammendment was based off of refunding the Security Fence Act, then it came with border patrols and sensors. I just don’t know what the amendment read though.
Hunter/DeMint BUMP
Doesn’t matter.
30-40 million illegals are already on this side of the border, and amnesty will allow 100 million family members to join them.
That fence will have a lot of open gates in it.
