Unrequited Love: Evangelicals and Jews
The American Thinker ^ | May 13, 2009 | Stuart Schwartz

Who would have thought that the key to battling the rising tide of anti-Semitism in Obama's United States lies in these words: "Jesus loves me! This I know, For the Bible tells me so."

The children of Evangelical Christians sing this hymn in bible schools across the country, reflecting belief in a life lived according to the will of God as revealed in the bible. No moral relativism here: on the one hand, God-honoring living, and the other, sin and defiance. Right and wrong -- it is that simple. And it is this biblical view of the world that underlies the unwavering Evangelical Christian support of Israel and Judaism. As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has noted, Israel and the Jews "have no greater friends and allies" than the 70-million strong Evangelical Christian community in the United States -- better friends, in fact, than much of the American Jewish Community.

Worldview -- influenced by the Judeo-Christian values underlying scripture -- has relentlessly led Evangelicals to the conclusion that the work-in-progress known as Israel deserves support in a region where thuggery, terror, and misogyny are status quo. Emphasizing individual value and righteous living, the Israelis possess a moral clarity that has allowed them to build a democracy that ranks sixth out of 35 democratic countries in fairness, similar to the United States.

The theme was David and Goliath, and Bible- reading Christians know Palestine = Philistia and Gaza has been there a long time.

For many years I have felt that connected nature with the Jews in Israel.

I have read the last chapter in the “Book” and understand enough to know who God will have prevail.

I still do not understand how some of the U.S. Jewish population can support leftism to the distruction of Israel.

From the article:

“These Jews are part of a feverish left for which it makes sense that Evangelical Christians would support Israel, for both ensure terrorism as they oppress the “powerless.” Case in point: Rabid Marxist and anti-Semitic Jew Dr. David Boyarin, a Talmud (traditional Jewish bible commentaries) professor at the University of California at Berkeley, who maintains that the highest form of Judaism is the destruction of Israel, and that the genetic composition of the Jewish race — if allowed to grow — will result in the oppression by Jews of other people.”

I guess I should expect this from Berkeley.

Wow, a Jewish supremecist. For a practitioner of “the highest form of Judaism,” he doesn’t recall why G-d picked we Jews to be His people at Mt. Sinai.

(Answer: we were the least of the peoples of the world, and could thus be used to show His power best.)

This type of talk is becoming more and more acceptable. Well what do you expect from the Margaret Sanger worshipping cult of death. The mother of eugenics is one of the left's Founding Fathers. In Obama's word Jews are useful idiots and the prefect foils. Blame the rich Jew bankers for this financial scandal, the intransigent Jew Israeli for all our Islamic problems, greedy Jews everywhere. MoveOn.org types pare not even hiding anymore. Where have we heard this before. The Jews in the Obama administration are like the Kapos at Auschwitz. Sad to see the world descending into this all over again except now the Crescent, the red AIDS ribbon and the old leftist peace symbols are the symbols of choice not the SS death's head.

The article said — Christianity continues to throw aside a long history of anti-Semitism to embrace what increasingly powerful Evangelicals see as God’s view of the Jewish people.

This is sort of a misleading statement. The fact of the matter is that “Christianity” is *not* throwing aside a long history of anti-Semitism.

The *same anti-semitism* of “Christianity that was represented in the past, is still in evidence and practice today in the so-called Christian circles, because they have not changed their attitudes that result from the *false theology* that they’ve been carrying along, all these past centuries. That theology is still in play today. And that leads to the continued anti-Semitism.

Where you will find the *overwhelming support* of Israel, is from the Christians who believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, in all that it teaches *and* in all that it says (on anything it says). And along with that goes the absolute confidence that the Bible describes the future events related to Israel, very literally, in the prophecies of the Old Testament and the New Testament. It’s that conviction that these prophecies will be fulfilled exactly as God says they will that leads to that support of Israel.

Now, there’s a very long history in the so-called “Christian church” where there’s a theology (in many churches) that says that Israel has no more significance with God, any more than any other nation in the world does. There’s nothing special about Israel, as far as God is concerned. And that God has basically “given up” on Israel, since they refused to recognize Jesus as the Messiah, and now the “church” is the one who takes the “driver’s seat” and God is concerned with the “church” and *not* with Israel any more.

That viewpoint leads to many churches condemning Israel and promoting Palestinians issues and politics over Israel. So, when you see a *large segment* of “Christianity” supporting Palestinian issues over Israeli interests and to the detriment of Israel — you can be assured that it’s *this group* of Christians who believe that Israel has no more significance in God’s future plans and that the “church” has taken over the “promises of God” (given in the Bible to Israel). They say that the church is the “new Israel” (and thus the present-day Israel has nothing to do with what the Bible says for these present times).

The ones who *will support* Israel, are the Biblical inerrancy supporters, the supporters of future prophecies being fulfilled in terms of Israel — and more specifically (in some theological terms) — those who believe in the pre-millennial view of Christ returning to earth, and predominantly the pre-tribulational view of the Rapture of the church prior to the Tribulation and the Dispensational view of Scripture.

That’s the area where the support of Israel comes from — and *not* from those who *deny* those positions that I’ve just outlined.

You can be pretty well assured that those who deny the coming 1,000 year reign of Christ on this earth (as Revelation says) will not support Israel as having any significance in God’s future plans. And those who deny the Rapture of the church will for the most part not be supporting Israel. Those who decry “Dispensationalism” as a method for understanding the Bible will also castigate anyone who thinks that Israel should be supported any more than Afghanistan or India or Mexico or Bolivia should be supported or having any significance with God.

In terms of their teachings and theology that leads to denying support of Israel, for the most part, it’s the Catholic Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Lutheran Church, and others who deny the theology as listed above (that I noted come from people who *do support* Israel).

Anyone who decries “prophetic events” of today as leading to the “end-times” spoken about in the Bible, as saying that these ideas are not valid from the Bible — are basically the ones who will also deny any support of Israel from any Biblical significance and from any plan of God (for Israel) for the future. You can see them posting here on Free Republic repeatedly, decrying what the Bible says about the future of Israel and denying that Israel has any significance at all.

So, keep in mind, that the *primary support* comes from those who do held to the concept of Biblical Inerrancy, along with a pre-millennial position, and (mostly) from a pre-tribulational Rapture of the Church, along with the acknowledgement that Christ will rule and reign over this earth in the 1,000 year Millennial Reign (in Revelation 20, for example), along with those who hold to a Dispensational viewpoint of the Scriptures. *That* is where the “Christian support” of Israel comes from.

The rest of the so-called “Christian church” is actually *against* Israel and the antagonism towards Israel (in this large segment of the Christian church) is ramping up and increasing. And it’s *this group* that appears to be growing into the *Apostate Christian Church* of the end times, denying what the Bible says that God will do with Israel.

For reference to the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, a position held by many Christians (and especially those who support Israel, for sure...) see the following link...

Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy with Exposition
http://www.bible-researcher.com/chicago1.html

The “Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy” was produced at an international Summit Conference of evangelical leaders, held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago in the fall of 1978. This congress was sponsored by the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy. The Chicago Statement was signed by nearly 300 noted evangelical scholars, including James Boice, Norman L. Geisler, John Gerstner, Carl F. H. Henry, Kenneth Kantzer, Harold Lindsell, John Warwick Montgomery, Roger Nicole, J. I. Packer, Robert Preus, Earl Radmacher, Francis Schaeffer, R. C. Sproul, and John Wenham.

The ICBI disbanded in 1988 after producing three major statements: one on biblical inerrancy in 1978, one on biblical hermeneutics in 1982, and one on biblical application in 1986. The following text, containing the “Preface” by the ICBI draft committee, plus the “Short Statement,” “Articles of Affirmation and Denial,” and an accompanying “Exposition,” was published in toto by Carl F. H. Henry in God, Revelation And Authority, vol. 4 (Waco, Tx.: Word Books, 1979), on pp. 211-219. The nineteen Articles of Affirmation and Denial, with a brief introduction, also appear in A General Introduction to the Bible, by Norman L. Geisler and William E. Nix (Chicago: Moody Press, rev. 1986), at pp. 181-185. An official commentary on these articles was written by R. C. Sproul in Explaining Inerrancy: A Commentary (Oakland, Calif.: ICBI, 1980), and Norman Geisler edited the major addresses from the 1978 conference, in Inerrancy (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1980).

Clarification of some of the language used in this Statement may be found in the 1982 Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics [http://www.bible-researcher.com/chicago2.html ].

You should also *expect* the desire for the *destruction of Israel* to come from a large number of “Christian Churches” as I’ve outlined in post #7.

You will find that along with some “self-destructive Jews” they will be complimented by a very large number of “helpful Christians” who wish to see the destruction of the nation of Israel — because Israel’s *existence* is a “thorn in their side” to the theology that they promote in their church. Their “teachings” cannot abide with a continuing Israel, as that speaks against their theology.

All the time, here on Free Republic, those who support Israel, and support the view that the Bible speaks about future events to come in regards to Israel — are attacked by other Christians who deny that Israel has *any significance* at all in God’s plans.

This is a large group of Christians who deny what God says in the Bible.

Exactly...If you believe the bible, you will support Israel...And if you believe the bible, you will not be over in Israel trying to give God’s land to the Arabs...

This is a large group of Christians who deny what God says in the Bible.

They do so at their peril, and unfortunately at the nations peril. This is because they do not take scripture serious, and those are the ones who do not respect our Constitution and buy this dribble of it being an evolving document. (by interpretation)

Well..., I would like people, here on Free Republic to know (and also you), that I’m *also* talking about people who say they are Christians and who post on Free Republic and they deny and decry those positions that I’m talking about (which do lead to the “Biblical support” of Israel).

I’m trying to point out that we’ve got a significant number on Free Republic who take that position, too. The “apostasy” is well underway on Free Republic. I should know, because I end up arguing the validity of the Bible’s prophecies, per the Bible, with them all the time. In fact, I can guarantee you that if I start posting some thread about these prophecies, about Israel and about the Rapture and about the Kingdom that Christ will be setting up here and ruling and reigning over all the nations of the world — that Christians will come on that thread and tell me it’s a bunch of baloney and that I’ve been fooled into believing a totally false theology. Really...

An example (in the public) of someone who was very conservative and not taking those liberal positions that you’re alluding to (above), was D. James Kennedy on the Coral Ridge Hour (he’s dead now, but while he was on, I did enjoy the information that was presented there). But you never heard anything about Israel and support for Israel. In fact, that group (Knox Seminary, ... associated with it) took a strong position against Israel, along with a lot of other signers of a letter taking that stand against Israel.

These are not all liberals, and certainly Knox Seminary was not composed of these kinds of liberals. And yet, they were Christians against Israel.

That’s what is happening here.

I’m trying to point out that the support for Israel and especially in the so-called Christian church (and even with those “conservatives” there) — is evaporating quickly. And it will continue to do so, unless people start *backing* not just “Israel” — but the “theology” that produces the backing for Israel.

If the “ground” is cut out from under you (i.e., the “theology” is attacked and gutted) then the support for Israel which is produced by that theology is going to evaporate. And that is happening, right now... (it’s “in progress”).

But, then again, the Bible does indicate that this support for Israel will evaporate. It’s just that I think people ought to know *where* that support comes from. It’s *not* from simply “Christians” — but rather — it’s from Christians who have *particular theology* that they must continue backing, if they intend to maintain that support in Christian circles.

And one *must realize* that it’s fellow “conservatives” who are Christians and who take a different (and what I call a *false*) theology — who are leading the “attack against the foundation of support” for Israel.

I hope you see what I mean, here. This is the *core* problem for the loss of support, from conservative Christians...

A follow-up here...

The article mentioned — Dr. Randall Price, head of the prestigious Judaic studies institute at Liberty University (Evangelical), has had a 30-year relationship with Israel based on the scriptural dictate to “love God, love Israel, and love the Jews.”

I’ve mentioned this person several times in relation to Israel, the prophecies in the Bible, his materials, quoted from him — and I’ve been *attacked* for taking his material as it’s supposedly “garbage” (said in so many words, that is) and is “not Biblical” and I’m believing someone who is perpetrating a false theology.

I can name a number of other well-known names, too..., and quote from them and I’ll be attacked, right here on Free Republic, from other Christians for using their names, their materials and/or their theology.

And these people are the primary people producing the theological “understanding” for Christians to “support” the nation of Israel as it’s important in God’s future prophecies for Israel.

You’re seeing the eroding of support for Israel, based upon *attacking the theology* involved that produces the “Biblical support” for Israel.

The idea (by these other Christians) is not to directly attack Israel, but to attack the underlying theology and then the support for Israel will wither away from a “lack of Biblical support”..., you see.... that’s the goal (and it’s a *goal* from other Christians).

I think we are on the same page, however, the red flag always goes up when “men” state that they understand these things before they develop. We cannot and will not understand before, but can only observe and attempt to understand as it happens.

The point of scripture is to prepare us, to see the events as they unfold.

“Only associate with those who seek the truth, but run from those who say they have found it.”
