It’s been ugly all day, here! Clouds and more clouds.
TC...aren’t you glad this is not an “autumn” baby? Somehow, the thought of going through the summer months with a bun in the oven makes me glad life has ways of compensating!

Were all a little behind in things... I just started a project I was going to do last winter. Once the epoxy sets I can test my new antenna -- but I strongly suspect it's not going to be sufficient. Though if it is, I'll have to gin up a rotator for it.

My son’s great uncle was a Catholic chaplain in the navy, back in the Viet Nam years. He sent me beautiful silk fabrics, and when he was tied up at San Diego, my son (2) and I dined in the Officer’s Mess on board ship.
He passed on about 20 years ago, but I would love to know about his life. I don’t know where to even start looking...

Its been ugly all day, here! Clouds and more clouds. Ya know, it's been an ugly day here too. Sun and more sun. Heading out after lunch for materials, when I saw how bright it was I considered turning back. They're promising a few clouds the next few days, though.
I actually initiated some summertime practices today, such as lowering the insulated roman shade in the dining room to keep the house cooler. (It gets used in the winter sometimes, especially when the power goes out.)
I wonder if they still sell those bamboo/rattan shades? I've been thinking of putting some up on the west (back) side of the house for the summer.

LoM didn't enjoy that much, though she was carrying a December baby. And there were other issues that made it all more difficult... but... we'd do it again anyway.

It sounds as though things are getting back to normal at your house.
Too bad.

Check with Lowe’s or Home Depot for the bamboo shades. They are available in Tucson, for sure!

Thanks! When I was beginning my energy-efficiency studies a while back I noted a remark somewhere or another that the most effective barrier against unwanted solar heating begins *outside* the building envelope. Obvious? Yes. But oft forgotten.
I'd like to have A/C here for more comfort but can't justify the expense for the few days we need it, though the furnace/air handler we put in a long time ago will accept an A/C addition.
The Scot in me prefers low-cost solutions.

Some folks in the Intermountain West use “heat pumps.” I don’t know much about them, but it may be what you’re looking for. Heat in the winter, cool in the summer and the rest of the year is “comfortable.”

" I'd like to have A/C here for more comfort but can't justify the expense for the few days we need it, though the furnace/air handler we put in a long time ago will accept an A/C addition. These vary in configuration, from a trenched-in buried plastic pipeline to a vertical bore with drop-in plastic loop, backfilled with the same dirt you dug out.
If you have access to a pond, you can put the loop in the bottom of the pond.
The basic idea is to circulate water or other fluid to pick up heat or drop it off, and then use a copper coil or such inside the house with a regular box fan on it.
The coolness of the ground will be transferred to the house, and when you no longer need it just turn off the circulating pump and the fan. Or put it on a thermostat.

In my own experience...(baby born June 2) pregnancy is nothing to shout about!! It's hard on the mother, to be sure.
And then the real work begins.
But "Thank God for Mothers"! Without them, none of us would be here. 9 months of uncertain anxiety, a decade or three of effort, and most will become grandmothers -- whether "revenge" or "guidance" or both, they will mostly be rewarded.

Some folks in the Intermountain West use heat pumps. I dont know much about them, but it may be what youre looking for. Heat in the winter, cool in the summer and the rest of the year is comfortable. The heat pump is the next step in what I was describing above. In Sionnsar's situation, the temperature underground is always cooler than that in the house. (Science based on the proverbial well-digger's butt.)
A heat pump makes it, well, professional. You're actually pumping heat around. Out of the house in the Summer, and back into it in the Winter.
What makes it efficient is that you can use the same heat over and over. You don't have to generate new heat.
Using last Summer's heat for Winter warmth, or last Winter's coolness for Summer comfort ought to appeal to the Scot in any one.

I'm somewhat familiar with ground-loop heat pumps. The Reichstag went to those (really deep ones!) in its renovation in the later 1990s. I've also seen industry standards for sizing same for sale, but for our locale there's a pretty high upfront cost in drilling for the downloop end. OTOH, the subsurface water flow through our property could significantly reduce the size of the required wellhole if we planted the downloop in the path of that flow.)
We're way up on a hill on glacial moraine; there are no ponds nearby as indicated by my annual tally of mosquitoes usually being less than what I can count on my fingers & toes.
