Great call. Forrest was the only person to go from private to general during the war. With no military training he was considered a brilliant tactician and without equal in battle.

Sorry I can't watch the video now but out of the dozens of books I have read on the civil war, my most admired participant based upon actions in the war is Lt. General James Longstreet. His leadership, achievements and longevity of good service to his Confederacy during the war is without equal.

As the Lost Cause mythos developed, some veterans who made major errors (Jubal Early for example) at Gettysburg and elsewhere saw Longstreet's post war Republican alignment as making him an easy target as they elevated Lee to the so called Marble Man of mythic proportions.

In that limited view of recent history in the four decades after the war, to have been defeated there had to be someone to blame and it certainly couldn't be the beloved Lee. Longstreet was one of the scape goats for General Early and much of that post war confederate crowd.

His actual record and responsibilities over a the full span of time outdoes most others when considered in balance.

I am dismayed at your feeble response. Pity.

Jefferson Davis - States Rights!

Nice myth, but the fact is, Jeff didn't respect States Rights during his tenure.

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, a true citizen soldier.... He earned the Medal of Honor that day.

Can't argue with that choice.

And I'm not at all surprised at your inability to give any sort of coherent respnonse at all. It's pretty obvious you need to do more reading on the subject.

Because on every rebellion thread there are people like you spouting the most outrageous kind of nonsense in an attempt to justify the Southern actions and blame everything on Lincoln. As long as you're around these kind of posts then I'll be around.

None at all. Come to Texas, and I'll treat you to a margarita and some Tex-Mex.

And I'll extend the same invitation for you to come on up to Kansas for some barbecue and the world's best draft beer. Heck, you can even bring some friends and sack Lawrence again. My daughter goes to K-State so you'd be doing her a favor.

"War is cruelty, and you can not qualify it, and those who brought war in our country deserve all the curses and maledictions a people can pour on. War is the remedy our enemy's have chosen. They dared us to war, and you remember how tauntingly they defied us to the contest. We have accepted the issue and it must be fought out. You might as well reason with a thunderstorm. I say let us give them all they want; not a word of argument, not a sign of let up, no cave in till we are whipped or they are."

The long and short of it is that the South chose war when they bombarded Sumter. Having made their decision then the final outcome was entirely in their hands. And as it turned out it was the South that was whipped, not the Union. Sorry things didn't work out as you would have liked but you have to blame your rebel ancestors for that.

LEE.
Lee was offered command of the Union Forces but accepted command of the Confederate Forces. The most liked general during the Civil War (by both sides).
Lee’s Family’s home is now Arlington Cemetery, the resting place of heroes.

If it were not for McClellan, we may have been deprived of one of history's all time great verbal slams:

"General, if you're not using your Army, may I borrow it?"
- Abraham Lincoln

I can understand continued sympathies with one side or another to this day. Regardless of where on hangs their hat though, I think Lee and Chamberlain are probably the only two who garner basically universal respect from both sides.

I love this scene from Gods and Generals where we see both Robert Duvall as a near perfect Lee, and Jeff Daniels in one of his very best performances as Chamberlain.

One of my sons goes to the University of Texas. I think we already sacked Lawrence.

Now if they'll only do the same to Ohio State.
