I could maybe vote for Ron Paul... and at least 4 years of Romney would be aesthetically pleasing... but I'd really really really rather vote for FDT.

There is talk of Fred being a VP pick for Romney.

Honestly, even though an ideal candidate for the position would be in his/her early to mid 50’s, the next President (assuming the GOP wins) could do a lot worse than to make Fred Thompson his first USSC appointment.

In the big picture of life, this is just one of the turns. Not a happy turn, but what is, is...

Anna,

I don't find it surprising that Fred dropped out, only disappointing in the sense that after Duncan Hunter, he was the most conservative. Unfortunately, neither of them was able to raise enough interest or $ to run a campaign, either indicating that there was some fault in them as candidates or there aren't enough conservatives to generate interest in having a conservative nominee. Either way, it does leave us without a candidate and I commiserate with you over that, but it seems like it was a long time coming as it was apparent that neither was "catching on."

He ran a campaign seldom exceeded in its ineptitude. I wanted him in, but by the time he opted out, I expected it.

I'm with you, AnnaZ.

All this talk about just jumping over to Romney makes me feel almost unfaithful. I just am not ready to "go there".

For now, I will lay low and eat lots of chocolate.

Oh, and just one more time...

I wish alan keyes was given a chance...and rather than vote for 3rd party (aka perot days)....I’m voting for him for the primary. I am wondering if those who are left are tough enough to stomach arguing against clinton/obama during the campaign. I think Fred would have had an iron stomach and then some. He would have been able to beat them in the debates.

Resigned myself to it? Nope, in my little world he’s already in the WH and has already turned this sorry mess of a country around. Please don’t wake me because the reality of the race and our future is much too depressing.

I'm completely miserable about Fred Thompson's withdrawal from the campaign. Just flat-out depressed.

You echo the sentiments of many folks here.
I'm at a loss for words myself.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things go.

You guys are getting way too emotional about this. As a practical matter, the next President isn't going to have any more leeway to imprint his personality on governance than GWB did - one or two major issues perhaps (that don't interfere with Goldman Sachs' agenda) but "go along to get along" on everything else. Even Ronald Reagan's forceful personality could accomplish only a couple of major things in eight years - though admittedly, staring down the Soviet Union and freeing the economy were the two best things any President has done in the last century. Fred Thompson wasn't capable of Reagan-like achievements, and none of the others will do any worse.

There is a craving among conservatives for a tough-talking, cigar-chomping "man on horseback" to stare down the liberal enemy. Resist that craving. It ultimately leads to tyranny when the wrong man appears with those characteristics. Such a man is caught up in the game (like many FReepers) and misses the point - achieving good governance.

Despite the reservations on FR about him, I think if Romney wins he will govern more conservatively than GWB has.

You know there is no comparison in Fred and Paul. Paul is a blinkin-idiot. Fred is a true, honest Conservative. Paul is a liar (he calls himself a Republican and he’s really a Libertarian).

Oh yeah, Paul is also a KOOK and Conspiracy theorist

Can’t say I’ll miss Fred and his bad judgment. Fred was never deserving of conservative support and it’s an outrage such an inept man was put up as a desperation candidate.

Look on the bright side, at least his old L&O episodes can air and everyone can get their residuals.

I'm amazed at how quickly we've resigned ourselves to it.

Not me.

Not sure yet what I'll do but I sure am not voting for Romney. People who already support him seem to be a little short sighted: "But, but, but...he will keep Obama/Hillary out of the White House." Okay, but then what after that? How is one going to keep him from governing like a liberal, from caving in to the congressional democrats and the liberal media time and again? How is he supposed to help keep the White House in conservative hands after he is gone? How is he going to help keep strong a conservative/Republican coalition so that they may win other races? RINOS only weaken the Republican Party.

"So there you have it... console or inspire."

For you & *only* you Anna, how about both?

Console: You're tougher than you realize and after all these years I know that about you for a fact. This too shall pass. ;^)

Inspire: Hmmmmmm, that's a bit tougher.

..could be back in Canada? :o)

Come February 5th, I’m voting for Fred anyway. I don’t know which RINO will win California, but he’ll do it without my vote.
