This can be either a commiseration thread, or an action thread.
I'm completely miserable about Fred Thompson's withdrawal from the campaign. Just flat-out depressed.
On top of that, I just can't believe the sort of tacit acceptance we've all had regarding Fred's departure from the race. Not only am I complete flabbergasted that he quit, I'm amazed at how quickly we've resigned ourselves to it. Isn't this the guy we begged for in the first place?
So there you have it... console or inspire.

When the whole story is truthfully told, I think people will understand, and be angered, at the same time.
FRed’s a good man, we just don’t have all the facts yet.
This last year gave me renewed hope for my Country, and this week’s events dashed it. I’m sure many FRedheads feel the same way.
I have to tell you, I felt a sense of pride supporting FRed that I haven’t felt in a long time. I also felt proud of the great FRedheads, and you two exemplify “great FRedheads”. I know I will look back at some of these threads and get nostalgic, and feel that same feeling again, it’ll be a great memory.
Thanks for being a part of my great memory!

And they would have been a hoot to watch! Darnit... I really want him back in.
Resigned myself to it? Nope, in my little world he’s already in the WH and has already turned this sorry mess of a country around. Please don’t wake me because the reality of the race and our future is much too depressing.
You echo the sentiments of many folks here.
I'm at a loss for words myself.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see how things go.
There is a craving among conservatives for a tough-talking, cigar-chomping "man on horseback" to stare down the liberal enemy. Resist that craving. It ultimately leads to tyranny when the wrong man appears with those characteristics. Such a man is caught up in the game (like many FReepers) and misses the point - achieving good governance.
Despite the reservations on FR about him, I think if Romney wins he will govern more conservatively than GWB has.
From what I've read of posts by young people on FR, it appears to be. They tell us that the "new" Republican party and the "new conservative" one will be Democrat-lite, more libertine, approving of abortion, euthanasia, drugs, etc. There seems to be no interest in anything conservative other than fiscal policy, concerned with only their future and how it will impact them, not the country, "Citizens of the World", etc. I suspect anyone going through gov't schools and higher education can't escape without having their opinions formed by the left.
JMO from what I read on FR.
You know there is no comparison in Fred and Paul. Paul is a blinkin-idiot. Fred is a true, honest Conservative. Paul is a liar (he calls himself a Republican and he’s really a Libertarian).
Oh yeah, Paul is also a KOOK and Conspiracy theorist
Can’t say I’ll miss Fred and his bad judgment. Fred was never deserving of conservative support and it’s an outrage such an inept man was put up as a desperation candidate.
Look on the bright side, at least his old L&O episodes can air and everyone can get their residuals.
I’m one of the many thousands that wrote to Fed Thompson MONTHS before he considered running, asking him to consider it. I wrote almost a dozen notes and letters to him asking him to consider it, but consider it carefully and if he was going to run, to run well and be confident.
I’m as surprised at his withdrawing as anyone - however, I will say this. He was honest, and fair, and he certainly did give it a go. Whatever his reasons for pulling out are, they are his reasons.
We can certainly draft him again, and beg all we like and he might or might not become President. His mother, I’m certain is a factor in all of this. I lost my mother when she was only 42. I was deployed some damned place when she died and had to beat feet back home for a funeral. I wore my dress uniform because she’d never seen me in it, except in pictures. But, I didn’t drop out of the military or give up on our missions, and went on to have 6 beautiful children with my wife. Mom never saw her first grandchild.
Fred might come up as a VP Candidate, which would be ok. I have no intention of voting for Romney - who is looking more and more like the shoe-in, but, if he choses Thompson as a running mate, I might be persuaded to change my mind. There’s always a chance Thompson will end up as PRESUS eventually that way, with more experience under his belt, plus his principled approach to things, it might be in both his best interest, as well as the Nation’s.
I suspect this has become a “Pre-Brokered-Brokered-Convention” with a whole lot of stuff happening in the back rooms and at night, and with the rest of the candidates. In other words, I think Fred might have made some kind of a deal to step down to give Romney the first swing at this. After all, Fred is certainly in good health and his mother who is, what in her late 80s is obviously proving he comes from good genetic stock (and will likely have a long life too).
So, my take on this is, don’t be depressed about this. The world WILL continue with or without any of us here - and whatever we do, we remember to make sure our children have and understand OUR principles, which will give America a leg up on the rest of the world-going-commie.
One man can change the world, but it takes a world to go along with the change. If Clinton gets in office, she will be going against most people, and it’s up to us to remember that we have control of the idiots in Congress. Remove them as we need to if they get too controlling of the rest of the population.
If a Republican gets in office, no matter how touchy-feely he turns out to be, or liberal, or leftist-leaning, we have letters, phone calls, and by God, POLLS to slam.
Don’t forget, Fred was our man, and our pick, but he’s backed off. That leaves US to do the job he decided he couldn’t do at this time. We chose him, we drafted him, he backed down.
Now, we fight to put a Republican in office - one that is closest to being a Conservative as possible - and we fight to keep HER our of office. If she wins, we fight her Leftism every, single step of the way.
Not me.
Not sure yet what I'll do but I sure am not voting for Romney. People who already support him seem to be a little short sighted: "But, but, but...he will keep Obama/Hillary out of the White House." Okay, but then what after that? How is one going to keep him from governing like a liberal, from caving in to the congressional democrats and the liberal media time and again? How is he supposed to help keep the White House in conservative hands after he is gone? How is he going to help keep strong a conservative/Republican coalition so that they may win other races? RINOS only weaken the Republican Party.
LOL.... that was neither consolatory nor inspirational... but thanks for stopping by...
It's TOO depressing!
For you & *only* you Anna, how about both?
Console: You're tougher than you realize and after all these years I know that about you for a fact. This too shall pass. ;^)
Inspire: Hmmmmmm, that's a bit tougher.
..could be back in Canada? :o)
Welcome to BOHICA ‘08.
Come February 5th, I’m voting for Fred anyway. I don’t know which RINO will win California, but he’ll do it without my vote.
