Saturday, November 3, 2007 Pride & Prejudice: What does 'Yankee' mean to you?
Southerners reserve three insults for outlanders and assorted other pathetic creatures. They are:
"Bless your heart" "Y'all ain't from around here, are you?" "Yankee"
This blog is barely two weeks old, but it has already taken a few pot-shots at some sacred cows, such as "bait-and-wait" deer-hunting, litterbugs and low expectations in some local schools. The ensuing conversations have largely been delightfully rambunctious, but a few visitors have registered their disagreement by simply invoking the "Yankee" Doctrine: You ain't one of us, so shut the f*** up.
It's not always aimed at carpetbagging pantywaists from states that fought for the Union 132 years ago. Fourteen states were established after the Civil War, mostly in the West, which didn't have a dog in that fight, so there are tens of millions of Americans who never set foot on a Civil War battleground, period. And the last real Yankee has been dead for 51 years (Albert Woolson of Minnesota was a Union drummer boy who died in 1956.)
No, it seems that to a grumpy Southerner a "Yankee" is anyone who "ain't from around here." "Yankee" is never a term of endearment. That epithet is fired like a squirrel-shot at any outsider who doesn't leave his/her native sensibilities at the Mason-Dixon line ... or who doesn't agree with the insulter. ("You don't like grits? What a Yankee!")
That kind of xenophobia didn't hunt before the Civil War, it didn't wash in the civil rights era, and it's unlikely to work in the blogosphere. It might surprise those parochial Southerners who still wield the word like a revenooer's axe, but non-Southerners are rarely insulted by the term. They merely know you're trying to be insulting.
And for the record: The outlanders' habit of calling all Southerners "bubba" or "redneck" or "hillbilly" is equally xenophobic. I'm afraid the American tendency to coin a slur is infinite and knows no geographical bounds. And if you're lucky enough to be a non-Southerner living in the South, then you hear ALL of them!
So, Gator-Baiters, educate this Yankee from Wyoming who loves Texas. What exactly is a "Yankee"? Can you describe what you see in your mind when you use or hear the term? Whether you're a native Southerner or a lifelong Manhattanite, why do you think this apparently archaic term is still so widely used in the new millennium?

1 Gator-baiting comments: buddy said... I'm "not from around here", either, and when I arrived here nearly 30 years ago, got the 'damn yankee' comment from some of the locals. Annoying, but expected, considering some of the Gomers who live in the backwoods.

based solely on how you "POST", you will "fit neatly in with" the BIGOTS, "useful idiots", REVISIONISTS,antisemites,HATERS, fools, etc that together comprise "the DAMNyankee coven" of FR.
further, as i said earlier, you'll be one of "the brighter" coven members. (most of the "interesting"/intelligent coven members have been banned FOREVER from the forum.)
btw, ask "Bubba Ho-Tep" WHO he used to be before he was banned FOREVER from FR (and returned under another alias), WHAT he did to get himself banned & WHAT criminal act he admitted to committing to try to win an argument "on forum". (fwiw, he is typical of the sort of coven-member that you will associate with, upon joining.)

ask N-S for your "secret squirrel number" sooner, rather than later.
laughing AT you.

Shall we recap? You claimed that the Spanish had a thanksgiving celebration outside El Paso "100+ years" before the Pilgrims landed. The Pilgrims landed in 1620. Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 and was still fighting the Aztecs in 1521. These are simple facts that anyone can look up. Also easy to look up is the fact that the Spanish never penetrated as far north as El Paso until Coronado's expedition in 1540, and he never came close to it.
There was a thanksgiving outside El Paso in 1598, which residents of the city claim as the first thanksgiving in North America. You can read about at the Texas Almanac website. But of course that was only 22 years before the Pilgrims landed, not "100+."
Yankee is a corruption of a British term of derogation which was a corruption of the Dutch meaning John Cheesehead, referring to the sometimes drunk Dutch citizens of New York after it was occupied without ceremony by the British and renamed from New Amsterdam to New York.
I DON’T need TO ask Bubba Ho-Tep WHO he IS - I can READ his POSTS for MYSELF. Even a CASUAL glance SHOWS that AT the VERY least HE is LUCID. That’s WAY more THAN i CAN say FOR you BOZO!
The hardy Civil War Yankees would have been horrified by seeing the likes of Barney Frank in Congress. I like to associate their descendants more with the conservative midwestern values rather than the brain rot that has infected certain coastal regions.
as i said at least ten times, go argue with the "Latino Heritage Group" docents of the Univ of TX at El Paso, who posted the data. (i'm NOT interested in arguing with a FOOL about this.)
in the meantime think on this:
you are widely known on FR to be nothing more than:
1. a SERIAL liar,
2. a BIGOT of the first order,
3.a NITWIT/FOOL,
4.a person who ADMITS that he was BANNED FOREVER from FR (for cause),
5.a creature whose REPUTATION is, for commonsense/truthfulness/integrity, RUINED forever on the forum &
6. not worth anyone's time to read his posts.
PITY that you don't know that much. further, that's why almost NOBODY will post to you except people like me, who post to you only to RIDICULE FR's main "inside sick joke".

as i said, be sure to ask N-S, The DAMNyankee Minister of PROPAGANDA, for your very own "secret squirrel number" & "secret DY handshake". you will fit right in with the NITWITS/"useful idiots"/fools/BIGOTS etc, that infest "the DY coven" & who are an EMBARRASSMENT to the rest of FR..

the Speaker of the House & the Majority Leader of the Senate come to mind, when i think on the LOUD-mouthed, sanctimonious, LEFTIST,SELF-serving,HATE-filled,ARROGANT,SELF-righteous FOOLS.(neither "stretch pelosi" nor "harry, the body" are from the new england area. BOTH are nausea-producing to almost every southerner.)

PITY. (btw, that's why southerners call people, who think like you,: "DAMNyankees", as opposed to "northerners".)
fwiw, we southerners won't try to change your "bitty mind".

several of those boobs admitted in 2004 that they supported "hanoi john kerry" against W.
at least 2 say that they are members of the DIMocRATS party.
at least 2 were seen marching with the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition at the last "march on DC".
by the way, game's over. you lose. thanks for playing.

10 years ago I worked as a temp for a company called EarthTech. They were fixing a contaminated piece of land and I had the pleasure to work with “Southern Men” mind you this job only was for three months. I just loved these guys. They called me “Yankee Bitch” lovingly because I am! My boss was from Marietta Georgia and he was not heading home for the Thanksgiving holiday so I invited him to my home. He brought Deviled Eggs and enjoyed the day with my family. To this day I always think of him and what a great time I had! They also hated Clinton!
fwiw, i'd bet that you are NOT a DAMNyankee, though from Yonkers.
only the HATE-filled, arrogant, SELF-righteous,LOUD-mouthed, south-HATING minority (i would guess not more than 10-15% of northerners fit the DY description.)of northerners qualify as DAMNyankees. (the majority of those from "up there" are just folks from the north.)
to ALL: as my grandfather used to say, "if the DAMNyankees weren't so busy HATING the south & southerners, they would be some other sort of BIGOT". (fyi, my Gramps was CORRECT about LOTS of other things.)

1. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
2. Brainwashed Yankees who to this day do not get Lincoln.
Ah, so again, you were fed bad information, right? In other words, the usual Watie ploy of "I can't back up what I say with any evidence that you can confirm, but believe it anyway." Here's the deal: Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519. The Pilgrims landed in 1620. For your story about the El Paso Thanksgiving to be correct, one of those facts must be wrong. Which one is it?
But since you said they "posted the data" that would mean that there's a website in which they say this. right? Where is it? And why do so many sources that I CAN find talk about the first thanksgiving in (what is now) the US being celebrated by the Onate expedition outside El Paso in 1598, a mere 22 years before the Pilgrims landed?
So I'll see your "Latino Heritage Group" and raise you NEW MEXICAN HISPANIC CULTURE PRESERVATION LEAGUE, the New Mexico Genealogical Society, The Pecos Enterprise, and Baylor University . And look, you can actually go see these sources, instead of just taking my word that someone else told me something (that's obviously wrong).
We all "get" Lincoln. We just don't "get" the made up version of him that you all promote.
I think if fans of the Confederacy did a more complete job of "getting" Jeff Davis they would see Lincoln as the lesser of two evils at the worst.
Were you there, swattie, or are you relying on your invisible army of imaginary friends?
the Speaker of the House & the Majority Leader of the Senate come to mind, when i think on the LOUD-mouthed, sanctimonious, LEFTIST,SELF-serving,HATE-filled,ARROGANT,SELF-righteous FOOLS.(neither "stretch pelosi" nor "harry, the body" are from the new england area. BOTH are nausea-producing to almost every southerner.)
I have to believe that.
You are the expert on "LOUD-mouthed, sanctimonious,SELF-serving,HATE-filled,ARROGANT,SELF-righteous FOOLS," after all.
Do you guys have a club you get together in?
