Make up is to cover up aging and make older women appear youthful. The practice has taken on a life of its own in modern society where even young nubile women wear make up in order to be acceptable in the parts of society that bring peer pressure to bear.

Honestly, I think young women would wear makeup even if they lived on the Planet of the Women and there were no pressures at all. Women have always worn makeup; powder, kohl, and lip rouge have been found in ancient Egypt. A hundred and fifty years ago etiquette guides chided young women for wearing it. Some things never change.

Young girls are just fascinated with the way their faces are changing and spend a thousand hours looking in the mirror to ask themselves the great questions, "Am I pretty? Do I have sexual power? If not, can I be made to look so?" They experiment with makeup and hairstyles to see if a better effect can be achieved. Beauty is the power of a young girl, part of her definition of herself, and if pots of paint can give her more of it, she will dabble with them. Always has been this way, always will be. Innate behavior.
