Dear Civilians, We know that the current state of affairs in our great nation have many civilians up in arms and excited to join the military. For those of you who can't join, you can still lend a hand. Here are a few of the areas we would like your assistance:
1) The next time you see an adult talking (or wearing a hat) during the playing of the National Anthem... kick their ass.
2) When you witness firsthand someone burning the American Flag in protest... kick their ass.
3) Regardless of the rank they held while they served, pay the highest amount of respect to all veterans. If you see anyone doing otherwise, quietly pull them aside and explain how these Veterans fought for the very freedom they bask in every second. Enlighten them on the many sacrifices these Veterans made to make this Nation great. Then hold them down while a Disabled Veteran kicks their ass.

Nor did I ever hear "dogface" ever used in the Army. Grunt was a term to describe Army Infantry, not the Army as a whole.
On the ass kicking thing, great post. How about if we just go find someone and kick their ass before they screw up? Get ahead of the power curve that way?

I am familiar with Coast Guard history, and worked with CG back in Viet Nam, but they were under DoD at the time. I personally consider Military to be under DoD. With the CG under Homeland Security and before that Treasury, I put it in the law enforcement column.

My kids wear that term as a badge of honor!!

If it is written by a priest, I wouldn't be surprised. One of the toughest men I ever met was an Augustinian monk who was our chaplain. Our battalion called him "Father Ranger."
Note to His Holiness Benedict XVI: Here's a man to put in charge of a seminary!

No, the Coast Guard is a military service by law (Title 14, U.S. Code) and by deed. They are not under DoD because that way they can enforce Federal laws without violating Posse Comitatus.

They are not under DoD because that way they can enforce Federal laws without violating Posse Comitatus.
Which is why I personally consider them law enforcement. There are similarities with the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force they all wear uniforms and are armed, but the same goes with my local PD. There is one very big difference the Coast Guard has a very real function during peacetime. While the other services are practicing for war (or delivering pizza to some hellhole), the Coast Guard is maintaining our navigational systems, rescuing people, intercepting smuggled contraband a real mission.

That's right, the CG is always "employed". And yes you're correct we work for a civilian agency which gives us our law enforcement powers. And I truly appeciate your comments and your service. But how about humoring this old retired Coastie and include us when you list the military services. And have a wonderful Christmas.

I really do include the US Coast Guard as a branch of the military but I have to have something to harass them with just as I sometimes ask a US Marine how it feels to be a Seagoing Bellhop for the Navy.
That does not mean that I dont have a high regard for both services.
