What’s in your ready bag and why? I thought that I would start this thread so fellow minded FR’s could compare notes and learn. Everyone will have different regional needs so keep that in mind Here is Mine: My pack is a hydration backpack made by Platupus in un scary blue color Everything is vacuum sealed with one of those food saver thingies

Preventative Meds: Pt-92 9mm (similar to m-9) chosen for low cost yet dependable 4 9mm mags in addition to one in pistol 2 30rd 7.62x39 mags (rifle is next to pack) Bayonet for rifle Cleaning kit and spare parts for rifle/pistol Vac Packed 7.62x39 about 50rds
Other Stuff: 5 liters of water in hydration bags GPS Batteries rechargeable all devices use the same size Matches Poncho Small blanket the foil kind 2 frs radios Solar charger for batteries Surefire knockoff led tac light Scanner preprogrammed for local and fed agencies
All this fits in one pack and weighs about 35 lbs. This is my warm weather pack in the winter we have different packs My wife has one similar in the first aid/food/sanitation she doesn’t carry as much ammo and few electronics to keep it light for her

I was just looking at my "kit" and thinking I had to update it.
Actually, it's a good idea to have more than one kit. I keep one in the house, in case I can't get out, and one in the car.
I hope FReepers take the time to do this SOON. Unfortunately I'm beginning to think this is a prime time for sleeper cells to wake up.

A convoy would be great, if time allowed. But I'd rather get out ahead of the herd solo, then get stuck in gridlock with my convoy, after leaving too late.

Living here in earthquake country, always do that - and a pack for work as well, if feasible.

Same mindset...I have an old toyota xcab 4x4 that I converted to a deep water rig that is propane powered. It has an 80 gallon on board tank and I have a small utility trailer that uses the same wheel tire lug pattern of the truck for minimal need of spares.
The trailer has 2 spare 80 gallon propane tanks in it and a QD Connection to allow me to use it "first" if I am on a bug out run. I choose propane due it's long term storage capability and it's multi use capability for stoves, generators and operating a old RV fridge in my homes garage if things get bad short term and I stay in place. Gas and diesel require treatment with stabl product to keep it fresh w/o bio buggies etc etc ....
The top of my trailer is a flat bottom boat if I get to really deep water and have to abandon my vehicle. The boat has a system to secure it and lock it over the top of the trailer and lift it on a hinge for gaining access to a construction grade "gang box" that I store other gear in.
In the bed of my truck is a KLR650 motorcycle that has a 6 gallon tank and gets great mileage . So if trauck & trailer has to be abandoned then I can get almost 1500 miles of the fuel carried and in the KLR.....
Of course basics such as katydin water filters and the new "miox" pens to make fresh water with an added desalinator hand pump if ya live near the coast is key. Camping gear for the long term w/ some pioneer tools and firearms an a puppy er two for security will get one through pretty well.....
My basic personal survival kit is in a small altoid mints size case that rides in my pocket 24/7 along with a leatherman multi tool, hurricane lighter, a CHL legal 1911A1 w/ 3 spare mags and a S&W 317 snub .22 w/ 50 spare rounds in a custom ankle rig cobbled by one of my old parachute riggers for us.
I wear the rest of my kit....such as boot laces are made from fire whipped 550 or 880 paracord as it's a valuable source of cordage either large or fine for sewing, floss, gill net making, emergency suture material, fishing, clothing repair etc. The web riggers belts with additional velcro allows me to use it as an emergency restraint (as if taking prisoners is an option :o), secure a splint, or emergency tie down on equipment etc ....
Lots of ideas..... NOLA is a lesson to study folks....learn it or go to summer school.
BTW can not say enough good things about Sat Radio like XM or Sirrus....it was there and channels like FNC, CNN and the XM emergency channel 247 was up and running for folks that had it in NOLA region. IMHO....THE BEST source of info as it has all the TV stations etc also.....

And a key factor is DON'T WAIT.
Every hour spent at home getting ready means more highway gridlock, and less chance of a successful escape.

I went to that link, and then the firearms stuff. Useful, but of course, I do take issue with his handgun advice to women.
He says that "most women like the smooth-sided James Bond automatics....etc.." That is what the thug who kills them will think too...when he owns it. He also recommends the .38 Chief.
Autos are prone to jams, ammo and magazine sensitive, need good lubrication, and can malfunction if held weakly. In 9mm JHP, they are also shallow penetrators in less than 147 grain bullets, and if they do penetrate, may only leave a narrow wound channel = you get killed by a wounded attacker. In the militry, handguns are meant to back up a long arm, not replace it, James Bond style.
Revolvers work, but are bulky. Such is life, if one wants to keep it. .38s are less efficient than a good 9mm in similar bullet weights, because of the auto's closed breech sealing in the combustion chamber better, but my main disagreement is limiting ones's self to Specials, and under re-supply pressure, not being able to even chamber .357 magnum. Once self-defense or game-getting shooting has been experienced by anyone, male or female, the reality of the instrument sets in, and one would prefer to actually get the job done than be comfortable while shooting a pretty and quiet gun, and missing, or wounding. Therefore, a .357 in a short barrel, and preferrably a 4" barrel, if USING it. A .38 in a 2" is anemic, but better out of a 4". Pretty doesn't work. What WORKS works.
I use automatics for utility and defense. I know what to expect. I also expect that ammo resupply will be easier for the 9mm these days. That only makes it an expedient, not a personal favorite. There is a reason so many are choosing +P for their 9's. 124gr. JHP is like a .38 light bullet....marginal, and if it plugs up, ball, which may exit, but make a narrow hole. Bad. I use "Winchester OSM" standard velocity 147gr. JHP, and am quite pleased. My handguns are also not wearing out, and I do not flinch in expectation. It also retains more power at longer ranges...but alas, the "gun scribes" have already done their self-serving handiwork, as have certain "stopping power" journalists, and Americans are in harm's way without even realizing it. You will not fix your 9mm by making an expanding bullet go faster, only make a bigger hole, less deeply...which could be rather self-endangering in a serious event.

Ummm.....don't O/U shotguns generally cock the second chamber with the recoil of the first? Under the excitement of the moment, or if you only have one round left handy.....better be sure to put it in the correct...hmmmm...right or left......chamber. What if #1 goes "click," then you have to slam the buttplate on the ground to cock the second chamber...

Firearms are a personal decision, and opinions will inevitably vary. The women I've known have almost uniformy "climbed the tree"; beginning with .22s and worked their way up to find a weapon they are comfortable with. Whatever they've decided has been fine with me.
I have an old Walther P-38 that dates back to WWII. Shoot it now an then to keep it toned. Even if it isn't what I consider a serious weapon.
Still love wheel-guns because they are so simple to use.
And .380s, because they remind me of Cap Guns when I was a kid.
Though I do have a very real soft spot for my slab side .45 ACP.

I like a nice clean stainless 357 revolver w/ a 3 inch barrel for my cache's as it does what ya say an yet you don't need magazines and can use two different calibers of ammo. With the old phillips and rogers mods ya can use 17 or more calibers in such. I think CADCO or reeder is the one making em these days.... called the medusa in it's day.
That due the fact ammo may have to be scrounged for the long term makes it my first choice for a basic survival handgun..... Not many looters gonna take 9MM Largo. But then again can looters even read ?:o)
