It bothers me that he can't seem to think on his feet, but I'm beginning to believe that he can't.

Kerry made all of the major gaffes (global test, North Korea, Iran and claiming to have been consistent on Iraq) and all you can continue to repeat is that Bush was whipped and can't think on his feet?

I don't think the President did as well as he could have or is capable of but he most certainly didn't do as poorly as you describe. Had he the Democrats would have more than his facial expressions to attack. It is tough to debate a man like Kerry, it's like trying to nail down slime. The trick is to show his faithlessness to any position, US interests and our institutions without engaging in a spitting match on things like the battle plan at Tora Bora. I do think the President could have done better, but he didn't do nearly as poorly as you insist and he avoided every trap.

I ought to add Leher's opening statement, though. He DID hint at what the topics were to be during the debate:

The umbrella topic is foreign policy and homeland security, but the specific subjects were chosen by me, the questions were composed by me, the candidates have not been told what they are, nor has anyone else.

So, Kerry could, and would, use this as a defense.

I had said this on the night of the debate. And so did others. He had the questions before and and had the answers ready at the time.

I remember that ...

Doesn't matter if it WAS his favorite fountain pen, it was supposed to have been submitted for approval before the debate. NOTHING should have been coming out of the weasel's pocket except a very, clean white handkerchief to wipe off his formerly orange brow.

If I can come up with retorts to every single outrageous statement Kerry made, and throw in his uneventful 20 year Senate career to boot, then a man who knows ten times as much about foreign policy ought to be able to.

He did poorly.

If you read the Qs you'll see that half of them were follow ups to previous Qs or answers. I won't argue that Jim Lehrer was tougher on the President, but I'm not going to DUmmie territory claiming conspiracy to the point of giving Kerry the Qs.

Remember Reagan had the whole Carter briefing book in 1980, was prepped by George Will who then analyzed the debate for ABC. Will said Reagan had given a thoroughbread performance, which was true, but he never bothered to inform the audience that he had helped prep Reagan and that his opinion was skewed by that fact.

I think we can create a pretty objective case today for media bias without going into conspiracy theories. And it does appear that kerry, at the very least, did not follow the rules of the debate agreement. What was on those index cards, we'll never know as they've been shredded, burned, and pulverized.

Okay, he did poorly. G.W. should be taken behind the woodshed and have administered 57 Heinz lashes to teach him a lesson.

Now, can we please move on to what Kerry actually said?

Dear madison10,

Sure it matters. It matters because you have to ask yourself what most folks will think.

Bringing in your favorite pen in violation of the rules is like going 67 in the 65 mph zone. If you get a ticket for it, you can't say the officer didn't have an actual violation to cite. But most folks will be sympathetic toward you and think the cop acted like an ass.

On the other hand, bringing in notes would be more like hit-and-run. When you finally got caught, folks would nod in righteous approval and indignation as they hauled your sorry butt off to jail.

At this point, I'd like to request that this thread be placed back into the regular section of the forum and removed off the "Bloggers" section.

Pretty please? We ought to get more eyes on this. It might prevent multiple threads on the same subject.

Kerry's movements are not consistent with merely pulling out a pen.

I would assume the paper and pen would already be at the podium for the candidates

So there would be no need to pull a pen or paper from his pocket

"I should clarify... folds up paper AFTER closing remarks... The axis of weasel is a cheater for sure by pulling out cheat sheet before debate and folding up AFTER closing remarks!"

This is going to be a KEY component to this HUGE debachle that's brewing...if it was nothing of importance, as arrogant as he is, he would've absolutely left it on the podium...we need to see if there is direct footage of him putting it in his pocket.

We have known that something really stunk about the whole POW/MIA thing. I would hate to think McCain or anyone else who we have supported may have been involved, but politics being what it has become, I guess I wouldn't be surprised.

Sadly, I agree with you. I expected a better performance after 4 years as POTUS.

I think the president has a nice enough demeanor that he could answered some of Kerry's charges with more force without getting mean spirited.

For example, when Kerry lied once again and said there are no connections between Iraq and Al Qaeda, the president could have calmly responded that it's evident the Senator has not read the Senate Intelligence Report which stated that Iraq was providing Al Qaeda with nuclear, biological, radiological, and chemical training. He could have also the Report mentioned that an Iraqi national and possibly Iraqi intelligence officer named Shakir was present during at least one 9/11 planning meeting.

It was troubling that he didn't take some golden opportunities and with the entire world watching, it is unfortunate the president wasn't more forceful making his case.

Also, when Kerry talked about a global plan, I so wish the president had reminded the world that in '97 Kerry was endorsing pre-emptive, unilateral action in Iraq regardless of what the UN said. He actually said it would show leadership if Clinton handled our national security without regard to the UN.

There is a way to debate without getting ugly. I don't know how to do it, but there is a way :-)
