I watched it full screen several times. He definitely takes something white, like paper out of his pocket. If asked what it was, I am sure he could say it was tissues and get away with it.

Where did you get the impression that I was referring to kristinn?

I don't want this to get diverted into an argument between me and thee, however, because I have seen you use that technique too often to divert serious discussions into personal squabbles. So I apologize for rising to the bait and am not going to take this argument any further.

Dear sinkspur,

I don't think debates make much of a difference.

I've seen analysis of elections since 1960. It appears the only time a debate may have really influenced the election was 1980.

In 1960, Nixon was ahead by less than a point before the debates. He lost by a small fraction of 1%. Maybe the polls moved almost 1%.

In 1976, Ford was closing but still behind Carter prior to the debate. Carter won narrowly.

In 1980, the debates appeared to perhaps made a difference.

In 1984, President Reagan was stomping Mr. Mondale before and after.

In 1988, Vice President Bush was already in front of Mr. Dukakis by the time of the debates.

In 1992, Mr. Clinton was ahead of President Bush before and after, little difference by election date. Same for Clinton-Dole in 1996.

In 2000, even though Gov. Bush was thought to have really decked Mr. Gore, and was a little ahead before the debates, he gained nothing from them. The Chris Lehane DUI thingy moved the polls more than the debates.

I don't think the debates do much to move the voting population.

I don't think that anyone really watches debates to help make a decision for whom to vote. I think folks watch them to confirm their pre-existing opinions. Once in a while a debate, like 1980, will give the lie to commonly-held views ("Ronald Reagan is a scary, mean, blood-dripping-from-the-fangs right-wing dunce who wants to blow us all to Hell."). In those rare cases, the debates can have an effect.

This may be off topic but...

Kerry's aides are talking. "Some one get a mirror and tell him to use both hands!"

Kristinn's been near the babes at Fox News.

For this, we all should lower our heads and BOW.

President Bush was off his game that night. He was back in fine form at his New Hampshire rally the next day. I thought he made many good points in the debate, but agree with you that he missed many chances to blow Kerry out of the water.

I don't see, even if it's true, what difference this makes.

If he had "Global test" written on his notes, let's hope he has more of them, since this was a major gaffe on his part.

I'm more concerned about Bush. I don't expect grandeloquence from him, but I do expect him to be able to come back at Kerry as well as I could and nail him in a contradiction. I also don't expect him to fall back on cliches like "mixed messages" eleven times and "it's hard work" fifteen times.

It bothers me that he can't seem to think on his feet, but I'm beginning to believe that he can't.

Well, I would like to see this reported by Fox News or some of the other majors.

Know wonder why Kerry was able to rattle off bullet point after bullet point. He was cheating.

Interesting, the liberals immediately after were using the line "in command of the issues". Well, when you can run through a list of "stuff" about a given issue, it is pretty easy.

The Bush campaign needs to be informed and really take a look at the CSPAN "Podium Watch" angle (I think that it what they called it). I tried to go to download the video from CSPAN, but it is rebuffers and is all choppy; couldn't even make it through Jim Lehrer's intro.

At the end of the debate does it show him placing anything back IN his breast pocket?

Fox News looks at Drudge. Especially the Fox and Friends crew. They may report it tomorrow morning on their show.

You, like many others here, want to grab onto any little wisp of anything that might explain why Bush did so poorly.

Well I have stated repeatedly Bush lost the debate on Style. I've also stated he won on substance, and it is substance that is going to destroy Kerry.

I note you keep citing Kerry won the debate according to polls. We all stated he won the debate. To make the leap that a "win" on the debate means Kerry picked up votes, well, you can make that argument if you like but I've seen no evidence of it yet. And if he didn't win any votes, that makes a stylistic victory meaningless.

BTW, Lehrer was biased as evidenced by his wink. I haven't pounded this bias because I expected it. As it is a mistake for the Kerry camp to roll out advertising stating they "won", it would be a mistake to focus on "bias" by our side.

Pulling out notecards during the debate is far different than screaming bias. Americans do not react well to Cheaters. I don't believe we need the allegations of cheating to "save" our prez from his performance, but if he cheated it deserves to be mentioned to the American public.

I just watched my own tape and the footage is grainy, but he definitely pulled something from his pocket. It needs to be investigated.

Well I really don't think Kerry was 'unmasked' during the debate. His words, policies and ideas were already known to most of America prior to the debate.

My point is, why allow the opponent an unfair advantage from the start? Baker should have insisted on an UNBIASED moderator. (just my two cents)

At any rate, the debate changed nothing. Bush will still win. But maybe the next two debates should require that both candidates show up naked. That way, Kerry can't smuggle in cheat sheets. On second thought, nevermind. I don't think the world is ready for that horrifying sight.
I know I'M not.

Have to agree- even IF Kerry HAD notes- it doesn't give GWB a good night. This is a danger I sometimes fall for- looking so hard at Monsieur Global Test, that I forget to look at my candidate with a fair eye. I love our president- and at times I let that blind me - I forget to be a grown up:)

How could you miss it. When he thought he was not on a TV camera, he just kept looking at those damn cards. Who couldn't see it?!!! Heck...I didn't know they'd agreed not to use them....so I thought nothing of it!!!

After the next debate...because of all the cheating taking place by the other side...and the fact the side doc was not signed I wish James Baker would move to NOT ALLOW anymore debates.
