The last paragraph did not run in the printed edition.

I didn't think the FSP was "officially" a Libertarian party org. and I still don't. I think the paper got confused because most (not me) members are Libertarians for obvious reasons.

When that didn't work, Glennie came up with the idea of a Libertarian space colony.

That has a certain ironic appeal to it.

The counter-attack team of pc screaming idiot anti-liberty statists along with crowds of illegal/legal immigrants formerly from third-world thug-governments (who neither embrace nor grasp the traditions of liberty or our constitution) will be retargeted to MIRV into that state. Outnumbering the free-staters, the state govt then gets custom-remade into a welfare/pc tyranny.

Unless ... you discover how to cure pc screaming idiots, etc., transforming the state into a paradise of liberty. Then export the cure to the other 50 states, then to the rest of the world.

If 20,000 Libertarians moved up to New Hampshire and declared themselves to be Republicans (or Democrats), started attending county meetings and working on campaigns, they could easily hijack the party and get their candidates elected.

At my county level, 10 activists were able to take over the entire delegation and boot all of the RINOs.

If 20,000 people sent one letter per month to local newspaper editors and attended one local city council or selectmen's meeting, they could take over the whole state.

The statists here forget that this is basically how America got started. Discontent people got together and went to a sparsely inhabited place, where they ruled themselves.

They'd get jobs, join civic groups, get elected

They'd try to get jobs, then go on welfare, ask Mom and Dad to send 'em money, buy dope, smoke it, hold meetings at Denny's, run for office and lose.

It won't work. Either you'll have libertarians moving to a rural Republican state and making it more conservative -- by no means a bad thing, but no revolution -- or you'll have affluent libertarians moving in, tearing up the drug laws and attracting "the wrong element" -- self-indulgent, anarchic types.

One difficulty is that you can't control who else will move in. You could argue that an informal "free state project" has been going on for years, as Americans move to lower tax states. As the economy begins to pick up in those states, other people move there who aren't committed to lower taxes and less government. They want the "social services" and "safety net" that they had where they came from.

Another problem is the life cycle. Young earners in the prime of life are natural, small-l libertarians, though most don't go whole hog. Adolescents, couples with young children, old people, those with aged parents or ill health are more inclined to turn towards government. And rebellious younger generations often turn against their parents.

A third problem is the business cycle. A stiff economic downturn and unemployment may rattle even the most committed libertarian. But it will be interesting to see what will happen. Will corporations rush to invest in the state or will they hold aloof, expecting it to be a mere flash in the pan?

I was derided a couple of years ago when I *seriously* opined that the Libertarians should all move to Vermont and take it over. It's a small enough state where they could actually have a significant number of voters, it is not afraid to tackle unpopular issues (same-sex marriages) and two of their three members of Congress are already not Democrats and not Republicans. Besides, their governor is spending all his days campaigning outside the state.

The Libertarians can experiment with many of their theories at the state level and see if they can actually make a go of it. We conservatives won't mind since Vermont is pretty much a dead-from-the-neck-up state politically already. It's a perfect fit.

But I got such hateful answers from the Libertarians for suggesting that this was just not worth their effort that I got the impression most Libertarians would far prefer to bitch about government than to actaully attempt to govern.

They can change the name of the state to Anarchy and we can see if in a year it looks like a scene out of Road Warrior, except with lots of drugs.

The Liberal-tarians will probably run all of the Illuminatis, and satanic Druids out of their "free state," then get high to celebrate.

The LP's have been getting a lot of grief about this, but I think they have finally hit on a good strategy.

As someone else mentioned, they should pick a small, sparsly populated state like Vermont. Getting rid of Leaky Leahy (a truly evil man) would be icing on the cake.

They should also bring some cultural conservatives with them to make sure things don't get too out of hand :)

But if the LP can make it work, I say more power to them.

And as someone else mentioned, NASA has been wrecked by the politicians. The fact that we put men on the moon 30 years ago shows that it is a shadow of its former self. When I was a little kid, I thought that since we were sending people to the moon, by the time I was an adult we would be sending people to Mars. I am 35 now and all we have done is sent a few robots there.

We should definitely have a moon colony by now (a US moon colony, not some PC international colony - international means the US pays for it and other countries get to use the resources for free). The Russians have the technology to do this as well, but they do not have the cash. Perhaps a joint effort with Russia would work (and forget everyone else).
