Karmelo Anthony has launched an appeal against his 35 year prison sentence for murdering Austin Metcalf, according to newly filed court records.
Anthony, 19, filed a notice of appeal on Wednesday - less than 24 hours after he learned his fate for fatally stabbing Metcalf in the heart during a track meet in April 2025, legal documents obtained by TMZ detailed.
The convicted murderer's lawyer, Mike Howard, told the outlet that 'We believe there are several important issues for the appellate courts to consider. An appeal is the next part of the legal process and a right afforded every American,' Howard said.
Throughout the trial, Anthony and his legal team have claimed that he stabbed Metcalf in an act of self-defense after they got into a confrontation during a rain delay at the sporting event.
Anthony had originally faced between five to 99 years in prison for knifing Metcalf, but after the verdict was passed at the Collin County courthouse on Tuesday, prosecutors agreed to consider 'sudden passion' as a factor when determining his sentence.
'Sudden passion' is a legal term in Texas that allows a criminal to argue they were in an intense emotional state when they committed wrongdoing. It would have reduced Anthony's murder to a second-degree felony, for which he could have served as little as two years behind bars.
It was then left up to the jury to decide whether to apply the 'sudden passion' argument to the case and reduce Anthony's murder charge or stick to their original verdict.
The jury then spent less than three hours passing its guilty verdict, and another roughly two and a half hours before they handed down their sentence.
Anthony will now have to serve at least half of the sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Can’t per USSC. Supremes decided some time ago that even if charged as an adult, if a perp was a juvenile at the time of the offense, they cannot be sentenced to death or life without parole any more.
He has a public defender. The parents kept the near three quarter million dollars instead of spending it in the defense of their son.
He was 17 when he committed the murder. By law, murderers who committed the crime while juveniles cannot be executed. Life in prison with no parole would be possible though.
Oh, okay. 99 it is.
DENIED..he got a fair trial. You CANNOT allow people on a jury who say point blank they will NOT be impartial, that is not how the jury system works. Now if you had a few potential black jurors say “Yes absolutely I would convict if the evidence shows it” absolutely they should be allowed on but you had people who point blank said “I cant convict a brother” well thats it, they are NOT allowed in that simple. And the defense team agreed to this jury, they could have objected but they didnt, and they put on a defense, and the jury looked at it and said they were full of poo, its game OVER, enjoy the pokey
They can’t. See my post above - US Supreme Court says that sinc she was a minor at the time of the offense, he cannot be put to death or given life without parole.
Its a shame because Karmelo could have grown up and been a productive member of society, he could have made something out of his life but he was raised from birth to believing that America is racist and he can do whatever he damn well pleases WITHOUT consequence, you can see that from the garbage his grandmother has spewed on down the line to his parents, they taught him to hate, they taught him “Go ahead, you are black son, you can do whatever you damn well please” and that is why he did what he did because he felt like it
One problem with arguing self-defense is that it means the opposite of remorse. It means you not only did it, but believed you were in the right and would do the exact same thing again in a similar situation. I’m sure the jury understood that.
Trust me, his attorney doesn’t know what the grounds for appeal are either.
With his entitlement, attitude, aggressiveness, plus inability to control any of his emotions, he is likely going to be put in prison, try to bully the wrong inmate and wake up with a bad case of death. Also possible that he’s about to wind up as some huge dude’s prison girlfriend.
Appeals will last only as long as there is $ available!
Give him the Chair! The Chair!
In Texas, a full fledged adult walked into a Walmart and killed 23 people and the state did not give him the death penalty.
With that, Anthony, even if he were 18 would not have received the death penalty.
Yep, playing the system is how the system works
It’s been said that even with all It’s fallacies the American justice system is the best in the world.
Many won’t believe it because they’ve never been exposed to the justice system in any other country and maybe not even here.
I already knew that but it was confirmed to me when I watched a multi part documentary on Netflix called “Worlds Toughest Prisons”.
An ex UK convict named Raphael Rowe spends a week in prisons in many countries.
Not only do many prisons make the ones here look like a Holiday Inn, the stories some of the inmates tell of being arrested and incarcerated without being charged to having to fender for their own food are a real wakeup as to how cushy the prison system is here compared to a lot of other countries.
Acid bath
Unfortunately.
He should have been EXECUTED!!
I think this is one case where the Racebaiter playbook isn’t going to work. Screaming racism and rioting isn’t going to result in Karmelo being released. Launch all the appeals you want, Karmelo, you’re staying in jail for most of those 35 years. You’re lucky you didn’t get life or the needle.
Here’s hoping.
