A recently unearthed study has set off a tidal wave of outrage after scientists claimed it was 'morally' justifiable to infect people with a virus making them allergic to meat.
Researchers Parker Crutchfield and Blake Hereth from Western Michigan University published an inflammatory paper in 2025, making the case that society had a moral 'duty' to spread ticks that were infected with or engineered to carry alpha-gal syndrome (AGS).
AGS is a real medical condition transmitted to humans through tick bites, causing victims to suffer allergic reactions when eating red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, dairy and other products derived from mammals.
The symptoms can range from a mild case of hives or stomach pain to severe and even life-threatening cases of anaphylaxis - where blood pressure suddenly drops and the person becomes unable to breathe as their airways swell up.
Crutchfield and Hereth claimed that it was morally wrong to eat meat because of the suffering animals endure and the environmental damage that the meat industry allegedly causes.
They argued that the only reason society should not be spreading ticks to infect people with AGS today is that scientists do not currently have an easy and effective way to do it on a large scale.
However, they added: 'But it is feasible to genetically edit the disease-carrying capacity of ticks. If we are right, then today we have the obligation to research and develop the capacity to proliferate tickborne AGS and, tomorrow, carry out that proliferation.'
Their main findings were that promoting genetically modified ticks to spread AGS would make the world better and help people become more 'virtuous' by avoiding meat.
They also claimed that this process would not violate anyone's rights, despite proposing to intentionally infect the population with a life-threatening infection.

The paper is a ridiculous ‘thought experiment’, but I missed where anyone is funding the release of ticks (?)
(Tabloids like DM are in the profitable business of creating fear or outrage in gullible folks on a daily basis.)

I echo your sentiment.
A very skewed view of ethical behavior.
“Mein Kampf” was a ridiculous rant by an obscure malcontent ...
So, do you actually believe that people are purposely spreading ticks in order to end meat eating in the US?
Yep. However, “Anything is ethical if it advances the revolution” (Karl Marx)
These two, Parker Crutchfield and Blake Hereth, decided to make themselves judge, jury and executioners for their phantom “morals police” fantasy.
If they can do it, so can I.
Build a public viewing area in a prison cafeteria and put these two on a keto diet.
Then we can watch that “virtue” vanish like the wind.

These guys are junior Fauci’s.
It affected me. I never thought anything of it. When I was a firefighter in Cali I got a bad tick infection. After that. I threw up any time I ate meat. I hated it but thought nothing of it and became mostly vegetarian. Fish and shellfish, no problem. But my favorites, ribs and chicken wings, I can’t eat. Same thing happened to my cousin in Virginia.
I don’t know what they call it but it is a serious thing and until recently I had no idea that this is caused by a tick infection.
Until recently I had never heard of this. But I did get it and it is a real thing. Nearly 30 years ago I got bit by a tick when I was a firefighter and ever since, I have not been able to digest any meat other than seafood and fish. I didn’t think much of it until my cousin got the same thing a few years ago in Virginia.
Im a vegetarian. But I also have goats and cattle for meat. Those animals don’t suffer a bit when they are slaughtered. The butcher comes out, hands the cow a sliced apple, and then a 45 slug goes straight to the brain killing it instantly. It is hard to witness at first but those animals are happy as can be when they are killed. Probably not like the animals at a slaughter house but out here in east Oregon the local animals are treated very well and we do everything to make sure they are happy, healthy, and dispatched humanely.
After becoming extremely allergic to vegetables about ten years ago, meat is now about 90% of my diet. There are few veggies I can safely eat. If bitten by one of these ticks would seriously put a wrench in the diet.
A couple of nutcases are spreading the idea that using tick-borne diseases to end meat-eating is a good thing.
Bad ideas lead to bad actions.
The ideas come first. Then the actions.
Just ask the author of “Mein Kampf”. Or the authors of “The Communist Manifesto”. Among others.
It's worse than that. This opposition to grazing is immensely destructive to grassland biodiversity.
Sue them?
That does nothing.
We are way beyond legal remedies.
“Researchers Parker Crutchfield and Blake Hereth from Western Michigan University…”
I say it’s morally justified to burn their homes down with them inside after nailing their scrotums to the floor.
Prove me wrong.

I’d like to know why these two terrorists aren’t being indicted by Todd Bleach.
“These people are attempting to make the “ethical” argument” not the “health” argument. Doctors have nothing to do with the “ethical” argument.”
Doctors are the ENABLERS. If doctors told the TRUTH about red meat, these clowns with their ‘ethical argument’ would be laughed out of town. Instead, thanks to our DOCTORS, they have a fully conditioned populace to support them.
Get them tic bit, and feed them meat only.
