A French investigating judge has ordered the French actor to be tried in a criminal court over an alleged 2018 rape of actress Charlotte Arnould.
A French investigative judge has ordered veteran actor Gerard Depardieu to stand trial for an alleged 2018 rape and sexual assault of actress Charlotte Arnould.
Arnould alleges that Depardieu, a friend of her father’s, raped her on two separate occasions in the summer of 2018 when she had visited his Parisian home to ask for advice. Arnould was 22 years old at the time. The Green Card and Cyrano de Bergerac actor was 69.
France‘s biggest film star facing a trial over rape and sexual assault allegations comes as the nation’s film industry grapples with its #MeToo moment. As part of an earlier trial and conviction, Depardieu was given a 18-month suspended prison sentence after two women accused the French acting legend of assaulting them on the set of French film The Green Shutters in 2021.

I’m relieved,” Arnould said on Instagram.
Arnould first filed the complaint against Depardeiu in 2018. She then brought criminal charges in 2020, alleging Depardieu twice raped and assaulted her at his Paris home in August 2018.
Depardieu denies the allegations, but lost an appeal for the French criminal court to drop the case. That opened the way for a Parisian investigating judge to indict Depardieu for rape and sexual assault, while releasing him without judicial supervision.
A French judge has now ordered Depardieu to trial. Depardieu denies all wrongdoing in these and the many other sexual assault accusations brought against him in recent years.
Any reflections on the two-year hiatus between "complaint" in 2018, and "criminal charges" in 2020? One would think the criminal investigation would have ensued "toute suite!"
In this day and age of rape kits and DNA evidence and forensic science, something seems missing in the story.
Could it be that the French turn a blind eye to such things when prominent men are involved? Seems to be the case in America.

I smell civil claims will be pursued, wherever a "pocket with some money in it" may be found. Cynical, perhaps, but such is society.

Pretty hard to make profound judgement on this with scant detail
In the article at the top, her story sounds questionable because she said she returned to his house.
But Wikipedia gives more information about this actor. I don’t know who to believe.
A 22yoa getting raped by a 69yoa.
Not without her help.
He didn’t give her the job she was looking to get.
So she cried foul.
Interesting to note that GP was and is an extremely heavy drinker.

It’s often that way. “Neil Gaiman raped me every time I went over! Over a span of two years, it was every day with that guy! It’s like, it’s enough! See you tomorrow!”
My wife said something like that as well. My remark to her was to "believe" in God, trust outcomes of civil and criminal court cases only when over, and "trust but verify" most other headlines.
As the years go forward to fast, I want to reserve the verb, belief, to actual beliefs. The media we consume would have us misuse language along theirs. Best wishes.
