Maria del Carmen Garcia was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in jail for the killing, which was later reduced to five-and-a-half years on appeal
A mother was overcome with devastation as she received a jail term for setting her daughter's rapist on fire and burning him to death after his release from prison.
Maria del Carmen Garcia couldn't bear the sight of her daughter Veronica's attacker, Antonio Cosme, after he was freed. At the tender age of 13 in 1998, Veronica suffered a brutal rape at knifepoint by Cosme, their neighbour, who was originally given a nine-year sentence.
However, during a day release in June 2005, the unrepentant predator brazenly confronted Maria at a bus stop close to her home near Alicante. Adding insult to injury, he had the cheek to ask Maria "how her daughter was".
After Cosme swaggered into a bar her family often visited, Maria, fuelled by anger and terror, bought petrol from a nearby station.
In a bid to inflict some form of justice, Maria entered the bar with the fuel, drenched Cosme in it and set him ablaze. With burns covering 90 per cent of his body, Cosme didn't survive and succumbed to his injuries days later in a hospital, reports the Mirror US.
Found disoriented around the port that evening, Maria confessed to the act. Claiming her intention was more to frighten or severely hurt him so he would understand a fraction of her daughter's pain, rather than kill.
Originally sentenced to nine-and-a-half years' imprisonment for murder, Maria's conviction was decreased to five-and-a-half years upon appeal. This sentencing sparked a national outcry in support of the anguished mother, with a groundswell of voices rallying to prevent her imprisonment.

I say ‘Good job!’.
Yes, I think the penalty for violent rape should be death. Or at minimum, life in prison.
Penalty? It's to prevent recurrence and send a clear message to other perpetrators.
If a high school teacher holds a kid at knifepoint or gun point or in a locked room, etc., and it is provable, I am OK with the death penalty regardless of the genders involved.
Some virgin kid doesn’t deserve possible HIV, STDs, or the shame or the intimidation, or the loss of their sense of security that very likely will adversely affect their future relations with a spouse, family, etc.
I don’t have any problem with her doing what she did ex apt for the damage done to the bar and possibility of injury to staff and other patrons.
Well said. I wondered when it was that rape became excusable...that makes sense.
Executing for rape depends on circumstance
Contrary to fembot wisdom
All rapes no more than beatings or killings are equal
I love a story with a happy ending.
The Moors used to run Spain, once upon a time.
So there IS that...
Rape takes away a mind, just as murder takes away a life.
She just wanted to make sure he was warm for the rest of his life.
“So would you all not have a problem executing a female high school teacher who has sex with a sixteen-year-old boy?”
______________________________
If a teacher (of EITHER sex) held a 13 year old boy at knife point and raped him? I’m pretty sure most folks wouldn’t have a problem with the death penalty.
You may need an eye exam or a reading comprehension test as you failed to catch the part of ‘knife-point.’
Too many false rape accusations.
Being raped as a child is a lifetime sentence of pain, anxiety, and distrust; and it can also include a greater likelihood of disease, addiction, and suicide. His sentence, at a minimum, should have been at least the length of her life to come and should not have included the luxury of day release.
while I don’t agree with the d penalty for repentant rs but I must note that the very act of r can destroy a woman’s life.
First the progressives reduced the penalties for murder, beginning with the younger killers.
Now is any victim less dead because killed by a 17 year old rather tha an “adult” 18 year old? Or purposely killed by a 10 year old?
Thanks to progressive policies 50,000 murderers live among us just here in the U.S.
That is aside from the millions of baby killers.
Those who are willing to murder deserve little consideration.
Forcible rape takes the life choices of the victim and reduces her (or him) to an object used for pleasure of the rapist.
By destroying a life the rapist should forfeit his own ,as should a murderer.
I love happy endings!
Agreed.
Reasonable people should be able to have a debate about the appropriate punishment for statutory rape, and most will agree that statutory rape involving a consensual (if there is indeed such a thing as ‘consensual’ involving an adult in a position of influence and a young child, which is also debatable) interaction between a minor and an adult, while worthy of punishment including incarceration, is quite different than a minor being raped or sodomized at gunpoint or knifepoint.
Additionally, if the interaction was consensual, executing the adult could have a serious deleterious impact on the minor.
Nobody is saying that an adult involved in statutory rape of a minor should NOT be punished, in fact, most would heartily agree they SHOULD be punished by incarceration.
I am in favor of the death penalty for forcible rapists, MOST especially ones who use a weapon in the execution of the crime.
If no weapon was used, a minimum of 30 years in jail would be my choice for a forcible rape without a weapon.
I’m in favor of the death penalty for ALL rape.
