Maria del Carmen Garcia was sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in jail for the killing, which was later reduced to five-and-a-half years on appeal
A mother was overcome with devastation as she received a jail term for setting her daughter's rapist on fire and burning him to death after his release from prison.
Maria del Carmen Garcia couldn't bear the sight of her daughter Veronica's attacker, Antonio Cosme, after he was freed. At the tender age of 13 in 1998, Veronica suffered a brutal rape at knifepoint by Cosme, their neighbour, who was originally given a nine-year sentence.
However, during a day release in June 2005, the unrepentant predator brazenly confronted Maria at a bus stop close to her home near Alicante. Adding insult to injury, he had the cheek to ask Maria "how her daughter was".
After Cosme swaggered into a bar her family often visited, Maria, fuelled by anger and terror, bought petrol from a nearby station.
In a bid to inflict some form of justice, Maria entered the bar with the fuel, drenched Cosme in it and set him ablaze. With burns covering 90 per cent of his body, Cosme didn't survive and succumbed to his injuries days later in a hospital, reports the Mirror US.
Found disoriented around the port that evening, Maria confessed to the act. Claiming her intention was more to frighten or severely hurt him so he would understand a fraction of her daughter's pain, rather than kill.
Originally sentenced to nine-and-a-half years' imprisonment for murder, Maria's conviction was decreased to five-and-a-half years upon appeal. This sentencing sparked a national outcry in support of the anguished mother, with a groundswell of voices rallying to prevent her imprisonment.

Her quest was noble, I defend her motive.
Her technique was not well considered. She could have found several, less public, ways to exact her revenge. Acting out of rage is seldom a smart tactic, in the end.
Uh, why is your screed replied to me? I said nothing about the murder at all. I merely said this whole thing sounds like it could have come from a Tarantino movie screenplay or something like that. Did you read my post before you hit the post button? Kinda’ rude really and a little unusual when there were others who were rooting this on that you could have addressed it to...
What gives?
Maybe when you experience the joy of being forcefully sodomized, you'll change your opinion.
"In 1977, the U.S. Supreme Court in Coker v. Georgia, 433 U.S. 584, held that the death penalty for the rape of an adult was “grossly disproportionate”."
Rot-brained SCOTUS that brought you Roe v. Wade. The same Roe v. Wade that held that, contrary to Coker, the vicious knife-dismemberment of completely innocent near-term infants by the millions was, proportionate and just.
They were wrong on both counts, of course:
The rape victim of a stranger is often killed. In fact, most victims assume they are already dead.
Bottom line is, if you reduce the penalty to nothing you diminish or ignore the value of the victim, as well as the lifetime of aftereffect, and you get much, much, more of the crime.
That's what we have now.
The 'penumbra' of this laxity is evident in many, many bad things in our culture.
Bring back the death penalty for rape.
Absolutely for children.
no simpleton... there is a HUGE difference in your arguement.
You see how the two situations get reported differently when it is a female being the aggressor as opposed to the aggressor being male.
Because it IS different?
Her daughter will suffer the memories and the pain of the rape her whole life. It may well ruin future joy in sharing intimacy with her husband if she marries.
Worth it.
I'm betting said sixteen year old boy would be more than willing. Hence, that would likely not be forcible rape and your contention therefore false equivalence.
“Are we saying the penalty for committing rape should automatically be execution?”
Yes. It should be.
L
HOORAY mom!
Actually. Yes. The rape of a child should get the death penalty. It destroys the child’s life. They will never be ok. It is proportional. Plus, child rapists are not capable of being rehabilitated. They will do it again. They just need to be culled.
Are you really “trying to understand?” Or are you just being deliberately obtuse to be provocative? It’s quite simple. If a female teacher rapes anyone of any age at knifepoint, then yes put her down like the rabid dog she has shown herself to be.

More and more female teachers who sexually abuse - MINOR - students are being arrested, tried, convicted, imprisoned coast to coast almost daily in the US.
Oh the times, they are, a change-in’.
Seems like a perfectly fine punishment for the rapist. Should have done that before his prison time.
Yes, I am fine with the death penalty for rape. Works for me. The death penalty is badly underutilized today.
And let that be a warning to others. Let’s hope this will “catch on”. (Not a pun.)
This is an old story. The rape occurred in 1998. The perp was killed in 2005, and the mother released in 2018. Why are they reporting this now?
“So where is the proportionality?”
“A life for a life.” The girl never will have one; he shouldn’t either.
