A Salinas man is recovering in a Bay Area hospital after he lost a hand from an illegal firework.
It was Monday night when firefighters responded to the intersection of Boronda and Independence in north Salinas on reports of a man screaming and trying to flag down drivers.
“When our fire department, paramedics and police arrived at the scene, they did encounter the male with the extensive injuries to his hand and his face, obviously suffering from a severe explosive injury,” said Salinas fire Chief Sam Klemek.
Firefighters say the man, believed to be homeless, blew off his right hand with an illegal firework. He also had cuts on his face and stomach from shrapnel and was bleeding from both ears.
The man was in shock and could only tell firefighters, "bad fireworks." Firefighters say the incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers of using illegal fireworks.
“This person will forever bear the scars of his choice to engage in using illegal fireworks. It's sad, but it also should be a reminder to everybody of the consequences of this kind of activity which you subject yourself to. He'll live with this for the rest of his life,” Klemek said.
An investigation is now underway involving Salinas police and fire to try and determine where the man obtained the illegal fireworks.
“We'll continue to try to get more information from the victim as he's able to recall or willing to share. He undoubtedly is going to have a long road to recovery, but we'll be persistent in trying to get the information we're looking for,” Klemek said.
Thursday night, law enforcement and firefighters will be on high alert, cracking down on those using illegal fireworks or Safe and Sane fireworks where they’re prohibited.
“There will be dozens of eyes on the streets, patrolling, recording, documenting use of illegal fireworks. So when those tickets go out, there will be with the evidence to back it up,” Klemek said.
I’m guessing Salinas California.
I guess when he tried to count to 10, he couldn’t get past 7.
If you are homeless and spend all your money to blow off your hand, you need to be more than careful—you need to be locked up.
shrapnel......dang......brings a new meaning to “light fuse and get away”
Counted to 3 and got two of the numbers wrong

You're guessing correctly. And I'm guessing not everywhere knows that the Bay Area is in California. In any case, people should always include the state when posting articles.
English is not his first language. Counting is hard for newcomers.
The holy hand grenade. After pulling the holy hand grenade pin
The number is three, thou shalt Count to. Thou shalt not Count one or two, but only three. Four is forbidden, thou shalldefinitely not Count to 5.
Sounds grim
Salinas? Probably a Mexican with a pipe bomb. Firecrackers don't throw shrapnel.
There will be dozens of eyes on the streets...
Confucius say, ‘better one be homeless than handless’.
very sad, prayers, this will ruin his life.
More lying propaganda. Can't figure out where the illegal fireworks are coming from huh? They have a conga line of millions pouring in from the Mexican border but these guys in Salinas can't figure out where it's all coming from.
They're on the case! Sharp like Bidon.
Joe Dirt:
So you’re gonna tell me that you don’t have no black cats, no roman candles, or screaming mimis?
Kicking Wing:
No.
Joe Dirt:
Oh come on man. You got no lady fingers, fuzz buttles, snicker bombs, church burners, finger blasters, gut busters, zippity do das, or crap flappers?
Kicking Wing:
No, I don’t.
Joe Dirt:
You’re gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don’t have no whistling bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?
I agree, it’s a large country and many states have the same city names, like El Paso, Illinois
