An Amish family had their horse and buggy stolen while they shopped at a Michigan Walmart, police say.
The theft took place on Saturday at approximately 5:30 p.m. in the town of Sturgis, Michigan – some 95 miles south of Grand Rapids near the Indiana border – when the Sturgis Department of Public Safety were called to the Walmart on 1500 S. Centerville Road to a report of a stolen Amish buggy and horse from the establishment’s parking lot, authorities said.
“A truck driver, parked in the Walmart lot, had seen a female steal the buggy,” according to a statement from the Sturgis Department of Public Safety. “He gave police a description of the female suspect.”
As it turns out, police had already made contact with the 31-year-old female suspect earlier in the day at the same Walmart, though officials did not elaborate on why they had spoken to her or what the reason behind the contact was.
Police eventually found the stolen horse and buggy later the same evening and were able to find the alleged unnamed suspect at a nearby motel where she was arrested without incident, according to authorities.

Unnamed and unphotographed I guess.
This is just a variation on the "I'll rip off a buggy cart so I don't have to carry my crap myself." It's what they do.
My MIL lives in Mennonite country in upstate country.
They are wonderful people.
The women are fit and beautiful—and their smiles light up a room.
Their stores have outstanding goods at reasonable prices.
They are skilled at all trades—true quality work.
I could rant on—but if I had to start life all over I would have liked to be born in a Mennonite community.
upstate NY.
One way to avoid this is to install a stick shift lever on the floor of the driver's section. Non-functional, of course. But thieves see it and pass it by as they only learned to operate an automatic transmission.
I guess the manual transmission wasn’t enough of a deterrent.
ICWYST.
Channeling Catherine the Great?
Do they still have laws on the books for hanging horse thieves?
Did they leave the key in the ignition?
Regardless, they’re not hard to hotwire.
I’ve shopped in this particular Walmart, which is just a few yards over the state line from Indiana Toll Road Exit 121 (SR 9, Howe/Lagrange). Lagrange County, Indiana is over 50% Amish.
That someone would do this to an Amish family is to be lower than a snake’s belly in a tire rut.
We get texts from local cops saying to never leave your keyfob in your buggy.
Indeed.
,,, is this the same Sturgis that has biker gatherings each year?
Well maybe, but she took the buggy just to get the whip?
By and large, the Amish take the 10 Commandments pretty seriously.
About 1,000 miles apart, give or take.
,,, thanks!
I was wondering the same thing.
Though because they have not released name nor photo, I wonder if this is a case of “the usual suspects”....
