The director of an Alabama high school's band was tasered by police in front of horrified students and arrested after he allegedly refused to stop playing after a football game ended.
Johnny Mims, leader of the band at Minor High School in Adamsville, was charged with disorderly conduct, harassment and resisting arrest for encouraging the students to keep playing after the game at the Jackson-Olin High School had concluded on Thursday.
The band had continued to play as police were trying to clear out the stadium following a win by the Minors.
Both the teams band kept playing after the game was over, but the losing team quickly left after police asked, according to police.
Shocking footage shows the moment police tasered Mims as teens scream in the background. The department said in a statement: 'During the officers' interaction with Minor’s band director, the decision was made to place him in custody.
'BPD officers attempted to take the band director into custody for Disorderly Conduct when a physical altercation ensued between the band director, Birmingham City Schools personnel, and BDP officers.
Mims was taken to the hospital, as is protocol after a taser is used, before being booked in a Birmingham jail.
He has since been released on bail, as reported by The Washington Post.
Following backlash, Jefferson County School Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin said on Friday he's gathering facts and urged 'everyone not to jump to conclusions.'
Mims, who has worked at the high school since 2018, appears to be a beloved member of the community, and many have come out to support him and denounce the incident.

I mean, most band directors soundly deserve a good tasing or twelve, but…
Were you or your father endangering the police? They have to assess a lot of different situations quickly. There is no case that is not unique.
“Were you or your father endangering the police?”
No! Absolutely not! No probable cause at all!
The officers reckless endangered us because they were jumpy cowards!
If you are afraid of cattle then you should not be a cowboy.
Why is his life worth more than an innocent civilian’s life anyhow?
Explain why his life is worth more than your life? Or the life of one of your loved ones?
"No person shall willfully fail or refuse to comply with any lawful order or direction of any police officer or fireman invested by law with authority to direct, control or regulate traffic"
That doesn't apply to situations where "traffic" is not involved, like people outside of their cars in a football stadium. It also has the limitation "lawful order or direction."
Too many police are trained to believe that whatever they say is a "lawful order or direction" but that isn't correct.
That is true, and it applies to both police officers and civilians.
Poorly trained police officers tend to make mistakes that can get them killed. Which apparently you would consider "Too bad, so sad."
Better trained police officers are wise enough to know that approaching situations thoughtfully, and not unnecessarily aggravating people who may themselves be easily provoked, or not entirely sane, is a good idea.'
Did the band leader have such a ticket?
I dunno. I doubt he had a license to do whatever the hell he wanted to do, irrespective of what the police told him to do. either.
Probably, yes.
In “Key Largo”, mobster Johnny Rocco, played by Edward G. Robinson, makes his washed up lush of a girlfriend, played by Claire Trevor, sing Cry Me a River, knowing she can’t sing.
Budding Rap singers?
One of sixteen Vestal Virgins
He’s clearly too cool for school, or wasn’t there.
Jordan Peterson knows a lot about IQ, It would be interesting to hear what he has to say about this.
The high school is 91.5% black...
Yep.
Police probably had no standing to do anything since no law was being broken.
If civilian authorities “trespassed” the bandleader, then they would have authority to remove the bandleader. Assuming the civilian administrator had the power to trespass someone.
These are the type of cops that would arrest children for not wearing masks.
Richmond, VA has an exceptionally high concentration of feral yoots.
And the right to peaceably assemble is in the first amendment.
As long as they were peaceable why were they being told to disperse?
And don't start with the "well they could at some point" or "by not dispersing they were no longer peaceful" because I will not buy just by not following orders the police have no right to give you that you become non-peaceful.
"The right of the people to peaceable assemble...."
But you have yet to provide a law that was broken.
Not one that you imagine.
And I would never tell the police to get me a sandwich. I like my food spit free.
