Who writes this stuff? How does one hear banging noises on an airplane from a submersible underwater?
Pretty sure they are leaving a few things out.
Sonobuoys? Perhaps from a sub hunter?
I agree not well written. Sonobouys (sp?) have been a great tool as underwater ears able to communicate with aircraft.
yeah, fishy
I wonder what the response capability is for detecting downed subs with people who just want fresh clams, chowder and burgers.

Marine patrol aircraft like the P-3 Orion and P-8 Poseidon can detect noise from submerged submarines.
And Rolling Stone??????????
I think there are designated ships/aircraft specifically listening for sounds on the surface of the ocean...that would be the best case scenario.....
Sonobuoys.
The military aircraft drop sonobouys which ping the ocean and transmit the signal back to the aircraft. But you are correct, it is not intuitive and mostly sailors involved in some aspect of submarine tracking would know this.
A great deal of our military submarine searching technology is conducted by aircraft, so one assumes that’s what “heard” the banging.
