NY state residents are told NOT to shovel snow after two died of heart attacks clearing their drives amid 6ft drifts:

New York State issued a warning for residents to avoid shoveling snow in the upstate area, which has been pelted by 6-feet of snow, after two people died of heart attacks and a third died when their plow crashed.

As the blizzard continued into Saturday morning, with a further 4 feet predicted to hit by Monday, the NYS Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services urged residents to avoid overexerting themselves when shoveling snow.

'Take it slow!... don't work to the point of exhaustion,' the department warned following the deaths of two unidentified Erie County men who suffered heart attacks in separate incidents while trying to shovel the snow away.

The warning was echoed by Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, who tweeted: 'Please continue to avoid shoveling this very heavy, wet snow - and use caution and avoid overexertion if you must shovel today.'

The Starke County Sheriff's Department confirmed that a third person had died on Friday, a snowplow driver from Etna Green, Indiana, whose vehicle slid off the pavement and rolled over, WSBT reports.

The hardest hit cities include those in Erie County, like Buffalo and Hamburg, where the snowfall has been amplified due to the effects of Lake Erie, which also created lightning and thunder.

One Hamburg resident showed off the sheer magnitude of the snowfall when they opened their garage door, revealing snow as high as 6 feet with even larger hills of snow in their front yard.

Always hear about people dying from shoveling snow, but never hear about people dying from raking the yard in the warm sunshine...

Very strange, if global warming is sooooo dangerous... /s

I moved to Phoenix and don’t miss snow, but if you have it, someone has to move it out of the way.

I was in Phoenix a few years ago and people were dieing from too much sun. It was 120 plus degrees and they didn't have sense enough to sit down in the shade and order another drink.

People have heart attacks. Sitting around all day eating Big Macs and then suddenly lifting a shovel of snow will do that. Gov has no business telling people to do anything. If they were so damned concerned about peoples health they wouldn’t have shut down business, Doctors and hospitals during the Covid scam

I hear you. I've been working in hospital emergency rooms for a long time and here in southern NJ retirement communities and old folks abound.

Believe me, ER personnel dread this time of year but expect it too. When a big snow storm hits if I'm on the day shift a team of respiratory techs, doctors and nurses get ready around 8 am and wait till about 10 or 10:30 and sure enough, like someone rang a bell we get the EMTs bringing the old guys who just had to go out and shovel snow.

I never bothered to shovel snow.
Buy a 4WD and good tires.
Buy good REI winter gear if
you can’t get military stuff.
I’ve lived through declared disaster
area Blizzards.
And I have shoveled snow at a 14,000 foot level.
it was a waste of time and it sucked.

“I never bothered to shovel snow.”
should be “I never voluntarily bothered to shovel snow.”

My grandfather died shaveling snow. That was about 60 years ago.

I don't recall the precise medical explanation, but cold restricts blood flow to extremities, while exercise increases the need. Somehow the combination can cause heart attacks. Nothing to do with scamdemic...

My grandmother had a couple of heart attacks in her 80s, but the big one got her when she was shoveling snow about 6 weeks before her 100th birthday.

I follow three rules when shoveling snow. One, I only do 10% of my driveway at a time. Then I go in to rest for awhile. Two, I always use my Snow Wolf. It’s an awesome shovel as it relies more on leverage than on strength. And three, only small snow bites at a time.

I bought my Snow Wolf years ago. I don’t know if they’re still made.

And as a side point, groups of kids used to walk my neighborhood and offer to shovel driveways for a reasonable amount of money. No one does that anymore. So it’s just me and my Snow Wolf.

Seriously? When I lived in New York my mother and I (from age 8-16) would shovel after every snow storm. What a weakling Country. Don’t do anything.. don’t move.. You may get hurt. UGH.

All new sidewalks and driveways should be heated. And how about a heat blowing machine to melt the snow?
