A Georgia college student died instantly when he walked into the still-spinning propeller of a small airplane he had rented for a dinner date, officials said.

Georgia Southern University sophomore Sani Aliyu, 21, was hit in the head twice at Statesboro-Bulloch County Airport on Sunday night after he got off a plane piloted by two friends who had taken him and a woman to nearby Savannah, according to officials and reports.

“They flew to Savannah to go on a date, flew back, landed at the Statesboro Airport, and the young lady got off the plane, and he got off the airplane and walked toward the front of the plane, and when he did, the propeller hit him,” Bulloch County Coroner Jake Futch told the Statesboro Herald.

Something doesn’t make sense.

I have never heard of a copilot getting out of a running aircraft. Let alone allowing someone to get out after them and then making their way to the front of the aircraft.

No one gets out of a running aircraft because you have to chock the wheels etc or it will coast away.

Either the writer didn’t get what actually took place or the pilot/copilot we’re not following any safety protocols at all.

I guess English is not a required subject in J school anymore.

First thought was BREAKOUT (1975) in which a bad guy gets the prop. Horribly graphic. I even sat through the movie again to watch the the audience reaction when the prop cuts him to pieces.

When shown on commercial TV the scene was cut out and replaced with an off screen scream.

The way I read the story, the plane was running on the tarmac after landing, and the two passengers got out. Didn’t read the part about the co-pilot exiting.

If he had not been vaccinated, can we list COVID 19 as the cause of death?

Did someone eventually come along and turn the key off? Gas is expensive.

Reminds me of a Mad Magazine take on Tarzan.

Tarzan is swinging through the woods saying “This very impressive to Jane.”

Then he hits a tree, and says “This very impressive to Tarzan.”

If the prop hadn’t killed him, the vaccine would have. 😁

I have never heard of a copilot getting out of a running aircraft.

Not saying what went on in this situation but I've seen entrances and exits from aircraft with turning props.

I had an instructor who had me stop in the middle of a runway. He got out and had me do two touch-and-goes before coming to a full stop on the runway and he got back in. At his direction, I never shut down.

I had one instructor who had an Airframe and Powerplant license open our engine cowling while it was running, having something to do with a failed magneto check. Apparently that's common enough in remote areas.

I've seen co-pilots and passengers board an aircraft with a turning prop after an approach from the rear of the aircraft.

I've boarded regional turboprops where the engine on the far side of the aircraft was turning.

I did see one manual prop start. It was a three man team where number one turned the prop while number two kept number one from getting pulled into it. Number three was at the controls. If number three wasn't available, number one insisted he'd have hand started it alone while number two was at the controls.

While not onboard the aircraft, we regularly had "wing walkers" who would guide taxiing propeller aircraft through cargo marshaling areas. These guys would be pretty close to the aircraft. I wasn't a fan and was surprised they didn't tow it with the go-buggy or push it but apparently it was standard operating procedure in one particular area.

You walk out to the end of the wing before turning one way or other, or, walk directly to the back of the plane to leave the area while the prop is still spinning.
