A woke San Francisco school district will stop using the word 'chief' out of respect for Native Americans.
The San Francisco Unified School District announced it will remove the word from its jobs titles.
It is unclear what word will replace 'chief' but the district said it has held conversations with its 10,000 employees and listened to their suggestions.
The school district said the decision was prompted after concerns were raised by Native American community members, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The move sparked an array of reactions on social media, with many pointing out that 'chief' comes from the French term chef, which originates from the Latin word caput.
A school district in Ontario, Canada took a similar measure in 2017 as 'a proactive step towards reconciliation.'
'What I found interesting is that the articles I read on the topic overlooked an obvious aspect that should have arisen as part of the discussion,' Chief Dr. Robert Joseph wrote for Indigenous Corporate Training at the time.
'Namely that “Chief” is a European title. As explained in the definition above, the term was applied to American Indians. It is not an Indigenous word.'

When I was in the Marine Corps every Indian…and there were a lot of them…was nicknamed Chief. None seemed to be offended.
In San Francisco? It probably is.
HMFIC
CEO can now stand for caporegime, or capo (mob boss), executive officer.
Very appropriate for some corporations, I suppose.
Yes, they are being systematically erased as if they were never here at all. I guess white lib's can only erase their guilt for stealing the Indians land by removing them from history.
Change every street name, every gated community name and every other name which references Indians. Force government to fully commit to it.
Because it was never intended as an insult it's a noble title of honor.
There is a huge movement out here to rename EVERYTHING that has a Native American name. I wonder why the Native Americans here aren’t taking the renaming as an insult. Because it is.
Sioux County was one of the last counties to be incorporated. I often wonder if part of the negotiations of the treaty was the naming. Could never find evidence of this but ..............................
I suppose it is time to negate another treaty.
"Sorry about that, Chief" will have to change....
““Chief” is not even an American Indian language word. It is an English language word. These sure are Stupid people.”
Comes from French, actually. You’re quite right about the stupid part.
Indian “Chiefs” need to call themselves something else, otherwise it’s cultural appropriation.
Bad news for the Irish folk group The Chieftains.
Chief is a word from Old English.
If a Native American is offended by that word, they might be too sensitive.
chief (n.)
c. 1300, “head, leader, captain; the principal or most important part of anything;” from Old French chief “leader, ruler, head” of something, “capital city” (10c., Modern French chef), from Vulgar Latin *capum, from Latin caput “head,” also “leader, chief person; summit; capital city” (from PIE root *kaput- “head”). Meaning “head of a clan” is from 1570s; later extended to headmen of Native American tribes (by 1713; William Penn, 1680s, called them kings). Commander-in-chief is attested from 1660s.
Zackly.
fkn morons...
lol
“chief” is NOT an indian word...
"... There is no reason to believe that this word was ever intended to mean anything other than its definition: “a leader or ruler of a people or clan.” There is simply nothing offensive or marginalizing about the word. Its use goes back as far as around 1300, when in Old French, it meant pretty much the same thing as it does now.
In the early 1700s, the word’s use was extended to include the leaders of Native American tribes. If Ms. Larson still feels the term is inherently offensive, she’d better start thinking of alternatives for the lead cooks of restaurants. Mayor of the kitchen? Leader of the culinary team? Because if she translates the word “chief” from English to French, she will find that it is “chef,” the modern French version of Old French 'chief.'..."
No, as Kimo Sabe
I oppose the name Indigenous Americans. We are Post-Denisovian Asian Landbridge Migrants and Aboreal Forest and Plains Dwellers. Got that white boy!
I’m in one of my schizophrenic moods as I’m 25% Cherokee, 50% English, 25% ScotIrish. To some that’s 25% drunken Indian, 50% English scum, 12.5% no Irish need apply, and 12.5% of those kilt wearing faggots from North of Hadrian’s Wall. Now you see my burden. At least I’m an equal opportunity hater. How can we all learn to live together when I can even live with myself?
