A woke San Francisco school district will stop using the word 'chief' out of respect for Native Americans.
The San Francisco Unified School District announced it will remove the word from its jobs titles.
It is unclear what word will replace 'chief' but the district said it has held conversations with its 10,000 employees and listened to their suggestions.
The school district said the decision was prompted after concerns were raised by Native American community members, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The move sparked an array of reactions on social media, with many pointing out that 'chief' comes from the French term chef, which originates from the Latin word caput.
A school district in Ontario, Canada took a similar measure in 2017 as 'a proactive step towards reconciliation.'
'What I found interesting is that the articles I read on the topic overlooked an obvious aspect that should have arisen as part of the discussion,' Chief Dr. Robert Joseph wrote for Indigenous Corporate Training at the time.
'Namely that “Chief” is a European title. As explained in the definition above, the term was applied to American Indians. It is not an Indigenous word.'
