Etymology of “Chief”: Middle English: from Old French chief, chef, based on Latin caput ‘head’.

Yes they are.

That being said, I have Cherokee in my blood line. Non of these words ever offended me nor hindered me.

I call my boss “chief” all the time. She’s never complained. She is a black woman and pretty cool I might add. I’m fortunate to have her as my boss.

Comes from French, actually. You’re quite right about the stupid part.

Indian “Chiefs” need to call themselves something else, otherwise it’s cultural appropriation.
