I have android tablets and went with IPhone 6 to talk with due to FaceTime and all the family I could use it with.

Buy the phone, pay as you go, done. No contract crap.

FWIW...I pay ~ $40/month for my LG/G3.
I have the smallest 4G plan since I’m usually on WiFi.

Have a AT&T dumb phone. $15 a month. A friend is nice enough to let me be on her Iphone account.
I have used the iphone and it is impressive what you can do with such a small device.
However, i am not interested in owning one.
Its easy enough to use a netbook. Googling, youtubing, Words with Strangers...so on.
I make free outgoing calls using Google phone to keep my data usage down during peek hours.

Buy at ebay at lower cost. Match the device model with the carrier you are using.
Skype seems to work really well. My son used it to keep in touch with his girlfriend while we were in Hawaii last summer. They chatted for hours at a time. Just about every picture or video has him looking at his phone. Lol.
And we would instantly drop photos into our Dropbox account for the family to see. Almost real time and depended on if a data connection was available which was most of the time.
Modern tech is pretty cool!
I do have an Ipad — it is sitting under a pile of ipods that have died because of dead batteries. Most of the apps won't run on my Ipad anymore. Ironically, it's battery is still pretty good.
I bought my Iconia A1-A810 last July and am still blown away. Fantastic machine. Now considering an Acer Windows tablet to replace my aging laptop.

Yeah, I love my “PHABLET”, I bought a mint condition one on ebay for about $250 I think. New battery and back door came with it. It was an ATT unlocked unit so I was sure it would work. But most carriers phones will work as long as they are GSM. They have a feature on the site that lets you check your IMEI or whatever number to see if it is compatible. It’s a big phone, but that is what I wanted. A 6.3” screen. I just tell people I am compensating for something...lol

I am not an Apple fan and I have a Motorola product, but Apple in no way has inferior products. They are not what I want, but hey are not inferior.
