The Civil War movie 'every conservative needs to see' (Copperhead)
Politico ^ | July 29, 2013 | Patrick Gavin

Conservatives are grabbing popcorn and lining up to catch a new historical drama with modern connections.

“Copperhead,” the new film from director Ron Maxwell, focuses on the Northern opponents of the American Civil War and stars Billy Campbell, Angus MacFadyen and Peter Fonda.

At least one conservative — Richard Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com — emailed his audience to tell it about the movie “that every conservative needs to see.”

“[W]hile Copperhead is about the Civil War, believe me, it will hit close to home for every conservative fighting to preserve our Constitution and our American way of life,” Viguerie wrote. “Because Copperhead is about standing up for faith, for America, and for what’s right, just like you and I are doing today. In fact, I’ve never seen a movie with more references to the Constitution, or a movie that better sums up our current fight to stand up for American values and get our nation back on track.”

The movie, which is based on the novel by Harold Frederic, follows Abner Beech, a New York farmer who doesn’t consider himself a Yankee, and is against slavery and war in general.

Asked about whether he sees his film as conservative, Maxwell told POLITICO, “I think if ‘Copperhead’ has any relevance at all, in addition to illuminating a time and place from our common heritage, it’s as a cinematic meditation on the price of dissent. I’ve never thought of dissent as a political act belonging to the right or left. It’s an act of liberty, expression of the rights of a free person — free not just in law but free from the confines and pressures of the tyranny of the majority.”

Maxwell said while the concept of dissent is as “old as time,” in the U.S., “it’s protected in the Constitution.”

Maybe you need to go look at that picture of the dead United States soldier again to calm yourself.

You are on some fine drugs if you believe that tripe...the North saves the south from itself as usual...lol

Son...the only parts of Dixie in danger right now...purple or blue

are the damned areas where your brethren have streamed in to find work after destroying the local economies they left from

you just never cease to entertain

I often expect that even X...one of your lads to be sure but often more lucid ...must look at some of your utterances and blush at the hubris...

you do entertain...I will give you that

the real issue though is our most western CSA state...Texas

due to the open borders of the GOPE fools and northern liberal progressives ..they are working overtime to turn Texas blue with the brown wave

and ironically the only thing that can save Texas is either conservative Texans start getting on it baby wise

or conservative Yankees fleeing the messes left behind come in great enough numbers

in that way you would be correct in an indirect way...the north and kali could save the south and the country in general

by the right ones moving there...

guess that leaves you guys out eh?

According to your compadre he is "pretending" to be dead.

Oddly, I left Texas for a better job in California. When I showed up for work in Texas, they had 3000 trucks on their lot they couldn’t sell. After I worked with a few other engineers (one from Taiwan-China, another from Detroit) to solve their problem we could make the fixes and start delivering them again. We solved the problem and saved the company in 6 months.

A few years later we were exporting our trucks to Britain. The modified and improved trucks were very competitive in world markets, and we provided right or left hand drive variants to various countries. We got a new billion dollar contract, and kept hard on top of any supplier problems that cropped up, and they did crop up. We had every engineer walk the assembly line once a week, looking as his area of responsiblity was assembled. That gave the local mechanics the socialization with ‘their’ engineer so they knew who to talk to about any problem.

After I left the company after 9/11, (went back to CA to another defense contractor) they went back to form, and under stress let go all the ‘outsiders’ and lost their next contract, and got bought out by one company after another for the residual service contracts. Rather sad. A lot of good people lost jobs because they listened to demogogues.

The town had gone through contraction before. They used to have a matress factory.

And when they’re just pretending to be dead it doesn’t do anything for you, is that it?

They hate half this nation and half her people.

You're from a blue state and hate the other half of the country and the other half of the people. What are you doing here?

And we find you guys highly amusing to.

by the right ones moving there...

Thanks but I already live in a more conservative part of the country so I'll stay right here. You can stay there. And when you finally re-establish Dixie v2.0 we'll wish you all the best and establish our own conservative country out of the heartland.

Eventually some bastions of education were developed, such as the Research Triangle in NC, the Redstone Arsenal, and small outposts of civilization around colleges and military bases.

The antebellum South had quite a few bastions of higher education, including the two Research Triangle universities, Duke and North Carolina, as well as the College of William and Mary, Washington college, Tulane, etc.

You are without a doubt a retread...just look at your sign up date and how you launched in immediately.

0.E.O is likely that forever returning retread troll, what's his name...Non-Sequitur?

And yet we,re all decidedly more conservative than you. Perhaps it is you who should be thankful at our hosts benevolence.

He hasn’t replied either.

I’m all but certain 0.E.O is Non-Sequitur and I think you’re right that he’s also pro-homosexual as well as a Southern hater.

The two often go hand in hand. Go figure...lol.

The south started the insurrection and war to protect, further, and extend the institution of human slavery.

I was under the impression that it was for territorial integrity. Fort Sumter WAS in South Carolina wasn't it?

The United States put down their violent insurrection.

Perhaps you can correct my misunderstanding of history. My recollection is that the Confederates bombarded the walls of Fort Sumter, but didn't kill anyone.

The next engagement was when the Union Army came down to invade in what was called "Bull Run", or the first battle of Manassas.

Sure, they blew up some rocks, but who started the bloodshed?

Under this strategy, you would probably also have to expel the entire West Coast. Those states, particularly California, are as Blue as the Northest corridor.

My thinking is that the liberal states (Red is the color of the communists, so I refuse to call them "blue".) will collapse of their own weight, and the competent states will eventually absorb them back anyway.

Not for lack of trying.

You sound kinda shrill. Your rhetoric reminds me of the liberals always talking about their "EVIL CORPORATIONS" or something.

You characterize everything as having a sharp contrast, when the reality is a lot more blurred.

As a wartime measure, slavery in areas in insurrection was ended by Emancipation Proclamation.

Once again, my recollection of history must be Amiss. I was certain that Secretary of State William Seward said something like this:

"We show our sympathy with slavery by emancipating slaves where we cannot reach them and holding them in bondage where we can set them free."

.

Slavery was ended in most of the south by the end of the war. Only about 60,000 slaves remained to be freed by the 13th Amendment.

Probably those in the North whom Lincoln didn't see fit to set free with his Proclamation. So what was the reason the North Kept slaves throughout the War again?

Seriously, do you not notice a cognitive disconnect here? If the war was over slavery, why didn't they unilaterally end it when and where they could?

Would you have kept Maryland slaves in bondage?
