The Civil War movie 'every conservative needs to see' (Copperhead)
Politico ^ | July 29, 2013 | Patrick Gavin

Conservatives are grabbing popcorn and lining up to catch a new historical drama with modern connections.

“Copperhead,” the new film from director Ron Maxwell, focuses on the Northern opponents of the American Civil War and stars Billy Campbell, Angus MacFadyen and Peter Fonda.

At least one conservative — Richard Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com — emailed his audience to tell it about the movie “that every conservative needs to see.”

“[W]hile Copperhead is about the Civil War, believe me, it will hit close to home for every conservative fighting to preserve our Constitution and our American way of life,” Viguerie wrote. “Because Copperhead is about standing up for faith, for America, and for what’s right, just like you and I are doing today. In fact, I’ve never seen a movie with more references to the Constitution, or a movie that better sums up our current fight to stand up for American values and get our nation back on track.”

The movie, which is based on the novel by Harold Frederic, follows Abner Beech, a New York farmer who doesn’t consider himself a Yankee, and is against slavery and war in general.

Asked about whether he sees his film as conservative, Maxwell told POLITICO, “I think if ‘Copperhead’ has any relevance at all, in addition to illuminating a time and place from our common heritage, it’s as a cinematic meditation on the price of dissent. I’ve never thought of dissent as a political act belonging to the right or left. It’s an act of liberty, expression of the rights of a free person — free not just in law but free from the confines and pressures of the tyranny of the majority.”

Maxwell said while the concept of dissent is as “old as time,” in the U.S., “it’s protected in the Constitution.”

From our point of view, it is impossibly complex.

Chaos theory notes that for non-linear systems we can not predict the future, so our decisions can’t be made based on predicted outcomes.

That means that decisions must be made on another basis.

But in this case, Abraham Lincoln did save the country with a lot of help from the US Army.

Then there are the people who assert that Jeff Davis was a Patriot. There isn’t enough moonshine in the world for me to adopt that position.

Darwin tried to stay away from human evolution too, at least at first.

Since we 10 homid species fossils, and DNA studies shows the genetic fingerprints of 16 retrovirus infections that have in common with chimpanzees, and the matching of human chromosomes to ape chromosomes, the marks of human evolution are plain to see.

Then there is the DNA evidence of 20% Neanderthal nuclear DNA in most Europeans, and 3% Denisovian nuclear DNA in persons of Asian heritage, with none of that reflected in mitochondrial DNA. Throw in structural differences between modern human skulls, and archaic human skulls, and you find that we are still evolving.

Sodomites as a class can include active homosexuals, and other members of the homosexual lobby who do not actively participate, but do promote the homosexual agenda.

Evolving, but how. I believe Darwin’s capabilities are vastly overrated today.

Maybe we are speaking past one another or maybe you not getting the point... evil has a king too. Out of selfish sinful interest it would be logical that most people spreading such tales would have a vested interest in the direct act, but they have plenty of sympathizers and there are just opportunistic trouble makers too.

Incidentally I believe that gospel can save homos/”gays”/sodomites the same as it can save any other sinner. The only sinner that it can’t save is a sinner that refuses the salvation. And salvation isn’t a list of rules followed on one’s own resources (though rules wisely applied can come to bear in sharpening one’s focus), it is accepting a Spirit as sovereign in one’s life and then letting that Spirit do what it does. In the realest sense, Love is the answer. Believe that God will love you back if you love Him... and in fact He will. More powerfully than you could ever have dreamed.

PS I find an interesting resource in this question (I am not giving a blanket endorsement but there is a whole lot of great food for thought here): Hugh Ross’s Reasons To Believe, http://www.reasons.org . Darwin can do a little. Darwin can not do even close to everything.

Interestingly, Hugh Ross’s philosophy on the manner of creation is one of “iterated plan” rather than “evolution.” I am not familiar with the exact retrovirus study but one ought to at least look at the actual evidence in it to be sure we are not reading it through secular trumped-up total evolutionistic eyes that make unwarranted conclusions.

I don’t think Darwin explains all. It explains some.

If you read Descartes, you would note that when he starts at

“I doubt, therefore I think”

and proceeds to

“I think, therefore I am.”

But gets to entirely conventional results from his novel start.

Reality is what it is. Different explanations have to get to the same result.

Some have more epicycles. Others use more complex math.

I am bold and say that Darwin is a minor player in the creation picture.

And what epicycles have to do with it, I don’t know?

Most evolution occurs in times of stress, immediately after changes.

In fat years, everyone survives, and variations can accumulate.

In lean years, selection occurs.

At Pt. Mugu, during WWII a small creek was used as the source of dirt to build the foundation for a runway. The hole created left a tidal estuary. Brackish water enters, and exits, diluted by the fresh water from the creek.

40 species of brine shrimp have evolved there since WWII, each selected for its own range of salinity and current. These species exist nowhere else in the world.

Where a species is fit for its niche, there little pressure for change. Where the environment changes, there is significant pressure for change.

New species are indeed evolving.

Darwin’s theory is of evolution. A lot has to happen to get the first life, and on that Darwin is silent.

After that, his approach gives substantial guidance on public health policy, which is why is is thought of as so important by socialists.

I’d personally be curious who audited the world for shrimp, who have a knack of hiding in unknown places, but my overall experience colors me skeptical. It sounds like an exception in any case, and how different are these shrimp anyhow in their DNA? Is it just a fishy set of Darwin’s finches?

Well, the discussion seems to dance around the whole idea of whether a Creator and Guider is needed to make sense of it all. Remember that the physical and biological sciences are inferior, not superior questions to the question of why the whole universe and why it carries on as it does. And they bomb on questions of spirit.

Lincoln saved the country? OK let me try to get this straight. 11 Southern states wanted to break away from an oppressive Federal, centralized government that was robbing them blind, so he started a war that strong-armed them back into the Union. A war that resulted in the deaths of over a half-million Americans on both sides. A war that meant him shredding the Constitution. What was good for the colonies less than a 100 years earlier was not good for the states that wanted to form their own country, their own government?

Lincoln Socialism

Let’s consider the Lincoln record. During just one term (plus 45 days), Lincoln managed to do the following “socialist-communist” acts:

Taxed the Wealth Creators. In 1861, Lincoln signed a law enacting the nation’s first personal income tax. Eventually, those earning between $600 and $10,000 a year paid 3% and those making more paid a higher rate. This was the first move toward “progressive taxation” of individual effort and we still live with such taxes today.

Exploded Deficit Spending. When Lincoln took over from James Buchanan, the U.S. debt was $65 million; in 1865, it reached $2.7 billion — a 4000 percent increase!

Led a Federal Takeover of Currency and Banking. Lincoln’s Legal Tender Act of 1862 created “greenbacks,” Federal paper money that Americans had to accept in place of gold and silver coins. And then the banking laws of 1863 and 1864 established a system of federally-chartered banks that undercut state-chartered institutions, in disregard of the 10th Amendment.

Forced People to Work for the Federal Government. Lincoln instituted the first national conscription act, forcing American men to give up their farms and to follow the orders of his generals. Lincoln also allowed men to buy their way out of the draft with a $300 fee, exacting more money for the Federal government.

Indulged in Government Giveaways to Special Interests. Lincoln gave away huge chunks of valuable national property to vested interests:

(1) Colleges: In 1862, Lincoln signed the Land Grant act, previously vetoed by President Buchanan; it gave away 300,000 acres (or the cash equivalent) to northern states for each of their congressional representatives to be used to establish colleges that would teach agriculture, engineering, and military tactics. Today, universities like U.C. Berkeley exist on that gift, teaching subjects like sociology and Arabic.

(2) Railroads: The Pacific Railroad Acts of 1862 and 1864 signed by Lincoln authorized the federal government to give away land and to go into debt selling bonds in order to finance the first transcontinental railroad.

(3) Land-Grabbers: In 1862, Lincoln signed the Homestead Act, also previously vetoed by President Buchanan. It eventually gave away 420,000 square miles — 10% of all American land — to squatters. Moreover, the Homestead Act generated a lot of waste, fraud and abuse.

Expropriated Private Property for Redistribution. With the stroke of a pen and no constitutional authority, Lincoln expropriated about $4 billion worth of private property (in the form of human chattel), today equal in value to at least $100 billion, and handed it over to poor blacks (the human chattel themselves). Not even FDR was as redistributionist as that!

Also it’s funny how our modern nature preservationists, if they think that Darwin can churn out 40 varieties of shrimp in an isolated tidal pool, are so worried about spotted owls. Call Darwin, he’ll fix the problem?
