The Civil War movie 'every conservative needs to see' (Copperhead)
Politico ^ | July 29, 2013 | Patrick Gavin

Conservatives are grabbing popcorn and lining up to catch a new historical drama with modern connections.

“Copperhead,” the new film from director Ron Maxwell, focuses on the Northern opponents of the American Civil War and stars Billy Campbell, Angus MacFadyen and Peter Fonda.

At least one conservative — Richard Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com — emailed his audience to tell it about the movie “that every conservative needs to see.”

“[W]hile Copperhead is about the Civil War, believe me, it will hit close to home for every conservative fighting to preserve our Constitution and our American way of life,” Viguerie wrote. “Because Copperhead is about standing up for faith, for America, and for what’s right, just like you and I are doing today. In fact, I’ve never seen a movie with more references to the Constitution, or a movie that better sums up our current fight to stand up for American values and get our nation back on track.”

The movie, which is based on the novel by Harold Frederic, follows Abner Beech, a New York farmer who doesn’t consider himself a Yankee, and is against slavery and war in general.

Asked about whether he sees his film as conservative, Maxwell told POLITICO, “I think if ‘Copperhead’ has any relevance at all, in addition to illuminating a time and place from our common heritage, it’s as a cinematic meditation on the price of dissent. I’ve never thought of dissent as a political act belonging to the right or left. It’s an act of liberty, expression of the rights of a free person — free not just in law but free from the confines and pressures of the tyranny of the majority.”

Maxwell said while the concept of dissent is as “old as time,” in the U.S., “it’s protected in the Constitution.”

I defy you to find one instance in which I've referred to *Massachusetts* as "respectable".I've referred to more than a few states in that way but never, never,*ever* Massachusetts.

And yet you call it home.

Do you realize how idiotic you look like when you refer to anyone at this site as being a supporter of Øbozo? No one here supports Øbozo? It only hurts your credibility to suggest that anyone here does or would.

And yet you call it home.

Three of my four grandparents were born here. Both of my parents were. All of my siblings were,as was I.Every member of my family is still here. Thus,I am here. But my political/philosophical heart is most assuredly elsewhere.

So if the country fractures and Massachusetts is remains a part of the U.S., your grandparents would still have been born there. Both your parents would still have been born there. All your siblings would still have been born there, as would you. And yet you claim you that then you would immediately pull up stakes and move?

Surely after all the time spent on these kind of threads you're not suprised when Lost Causers pull out the liberal tag for anyone with the nerve to disagree with them?

With great sadness, yes. And not until I've made an enormous effort to convince them to come along. And given that there's not an unproductive layabout to be found in my family I'd surely meet with some...if not substantial...success in that effort.

You immediately resort to the ad hominem attack, which is the logical fallacy that limited thinkers first choose.

All that you named plus warehousing, cartage, insurance, ship building, dock owners, carpenters, livery renters, accountants, and thousands of hourly workers in Philadelphia, Baltimore, New York, Boston, Providence, and New Haven.

Northern secession talk was everywhere in March of 1861. Meanwhile, northern governors were all over Lincoln to start a war.....which of course he did.

Karl Marx’s great hero Lincoln if alive today would be at home in the socialist democratic party. The reason? Lincoln was a big government socialist of the first degree who wanted, and got, a massive centralized Federal government.
There’s a reason why this murdering SOB is the great hero of both liberal democrats and RINOs. I know of no REAL conservative or libertarian that will not speak the truth about the great socialist Lincoln. The SOB shredded the Constitution of this country and murdered Americans wholesale, both Southern and Northern, to carry out his scheme to centralize all government in Washington DC. The Founding Fathers would not recognize the country that this warmongering socialist turned it into. Thank God they did not live long enough to see their great experiment destroyed by this two-bit murdering madman railroad lawyer.

So was Jeff Davis. So I guess what you're saying is that we were screwed no matter what.

I know of no REAL conservative or libertarian that will not speak the truth about the great socialist Lincoln.

Then you can no doubt come up with a quote from Ronald Reagan speaking "the truth about the great socialist Lincoln"? Two would be better but one will do.

Thank God they did not live long enough to see their great experiment destroyed by this two-bit murdering madman railroad lawyer.

Don't like him much, do you?

Karl Marx was a big fan of your hero Lincoln, who by the way was probably a homosexual. Maybe that’s why he was so “depressed” all the time. Just couldn’t handle being a closet case so it drove him to bouts of depression.

Where do you think the term “Log Cabin Republican” came from?
And it is documented fact that Lincoln was a fan of Marxist Karl Marx and vice versa.

In the unlikely event that the country breaks up, it's not going to break up into giant superstates.

Just as the East Coast, West Coast, and Great Lakes wouldn't be one country, neither would the South and West stick together.

Once people decide they won't take orders from Washington and send their money there, it's hard to believe they'd still take orders from some capital half a continent or more away and send their money hundreds or thousands of miles away.

And yes, if you move to some new splinter state from the other part of the country, you might well be regarded with suspicion, expected to lay low, keep quiet, and not get in people's way.

Your bumper stickers won't make people trust you any more once they find out where you're from.

But it's not going to happen any time soon.
