R.I.P. Christopher Hitchens

December 15, 2011 11:51 P.M. By Daniel Foster     Vanity Fair reports that Christopher Hitchens has passed away. Often frustrating, usually provocative, always brilliant. He added to the culture, and the conversation.

I’m sure I join many in hoping he is in for a glorious, glorious surprise.

We aren’t talking about someone that thinks they are smarter than god. We are talking about someone that didn’t believe in god.

- - - -
By definition if he didn’t believe in God, then he believed he was smarter than God.

Oh get over it, Hitchens probably would have thought it funny.

R.I.P., Hitch. A formidable intellect (though sometimes galloping in the wrong direction) and a rapier wit.

You may be right, but I hope at the last moment he repented. I have seen it happen several times. It is by grace and shear grace alone that any of us are saved. I have prayed for him, as I am sure his brother Peter has who is a repentant ex atheist.

I do not judge his eternal destination.

Sure you do. Your post makes that pretty clear.

Here's hoping we'll one day encounter a redeemed Christopher Hitchens in eternity....

The LORD knows many freepers prayed for him. It is with tears that I hear about his death.

I’ll miss The Hitch. I wish I’d had the opportunity to have a few drinks with him. I’ll pray for his soul.

But Hitchens didn’t seem the type for a deathbed conversion.

Reportedly, Steve Jobs's last words were Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.

So someone with a lively, insightful, active mind and spirit is “dead” in your opinion just because he doesn’t abide by the same doigma as you? Christ never asked us to believe in a dogma. I’m open to being convinced otherwise, but I’ve read the New Testament over and over and don’t see that anywhere.

CS Lewis said that he felt that atheists maybe closer to God than many others who never take a position either way. Atheists at least adhere to reason and reason is a step in God’s direction.

I absolutely agree with this. The irony is that, I felt, Hitchens talked about God more than any writer or political commentator I knew.

I always felt Revelations 3:15-16 has some relevance to this

"'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!

You ought to have a little more humility. Christopher Hitchens has seen his God face to face. You haven’t.

I know we have a merciful and loving God. Hitchens was not a stranger to the Christian faith. So though he proudly professed denial of any god or creator, I and many here prayed for him that God would open his eyes to the truth. I heard that he had a brother that is a Christian so I have no doubt he knew what the "gospel" was and that, in his last moments, he was surrounded by family and friends - many praying right there. Only God knows his heart.

We don't know the real reasons why people reject God, though some - maybe Hitchens - make a career out of publicly rejecting him and all those whose lives have been changed by God. It becomes an intellectual pursuit to mock, deride and, even, compete with others of like mind to see who is best at debating those "believers". As one of those believers, it is impossible to imagine ever honestly denying God IS and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him. Yet some will never seek God and for whatever reason will only see the truth when it is too late - when judgment is passed and a sentence of eternal hell is imposed. I shudder to even think of such an eternity. I pray that others who have been influenced by Mr. Hitchens take the time to honestly access what they believe and why they do and that God speaks through the still, small voice, that he IS and can be found if we search for him with all our hearts.

No, what makes you a prick is acting excited about the possibility that he could have gone to hell.

Christopher pleased me at times. He intrigued me at times. He frustrated me at times. He angered me at times. In the end he left me without his voice, for all time.

I am not amused!

Good-bye Mr. Hitchens.

Re-read that. I never said what you claim. Hitchens IS dead, I don’t pray for those who have already passed on.

So, take you snide little comments elsewhere or learn to read before you attack someone.

The Bible teaches a lot of things, many of which I’m sure you’re just vaguely aware of, completely ignorant of, or do not understand.

Thank you for your reasoned response, drowning out one that is so unnecessary.

R.I.P. Mr. Hitchens.

And it isn’t my job to convince you of anything, that is the Holy Spirit’s job.

FWIW, I am very anti-dogma, Mormonism cured me of that.
