Around the country, night workers at Walmart stores are being told to come in five hours early ON Thanksgiving. After having work until 7am that morning, they must get whatever sleep they can and then reutrn to work at 5pm for a 12 hour shift. How much time does this leave for them to spend the holiday with their family?
Walmart wants to call their employees associates. No, they are just workers.
A few years ago, we were traveling on Christmas and found that Walgreens was open. Disappointing. All I wanted was a camera which I could buy at a convenience store. The workers at Walgreens and the fast food places were NOT happy to be working to be working on Christmas. Most retailers do not need to be open on the holidays.
Thank you
***Personally, I dont think anyone should have to work on Thanksgiving, Christmas or July 4th.****
Sounds like my worthless brother-in-law (If you know him he probably owes you money). He quit working in 1980 and hasn’t worked since. He found he could pass off a high school football injury as a VN War injury and draws a disability check.
He always shows up for holidays at my house and moans about how I never could get holidays off to be with him. I’d rather work and get the OT than be around him!
It saddens me to see all this acrimony between us Freepers. Sure, nurses and firemen have to work 365 days a year. They knew it coming in. But retail? Come on! In this country Thanksgiving was copied from Europe-celebrating the end of the harvest. It’s beautiful(to me). The fact that employers will try to one-up each other by moving Black Friday to a holiday would suggest that the ultimate form of capitalism is the ability to OWN another human being.
This is when people start turning to the government. If adults could solve this issue there would be no need for Democrats.
In Japan there is a time at the end of the year when the entire country shuts down. No one would accuse them of being lazy. 3 NFL games on Thanksgiving? It’s a distraction when we should be enjoying our family company. There are more important things than making a buck and I think that one or 2 days a year we should all take the time to agknowlege it-mandated if that is ones choice.
They have to be navy blue in color, which is impossible to find.
Your post is really bothering me. My eldest son lives in New Orleans and is a bartender there. He works with 2 other bartenders who happen to be single mothers. He isn’t coming home for Christmas OR Thanksgiving this year as he will work both holidays to ensure that the other bartenders have time with their children.
Yes, I am sad that he won’t be coming home, but on the other hand I am SO proud that he made the decision that he made. He will work both holidays, but 2 sets of children will have their mom’s at home with them for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas. And hopefully I’ll see my son sometime in the new year.
No, they are just workers.
Just like the government says we are just taxes and whiners.
Give me a break! It’s rare for our whole family to be together on any holiday due to the demands of a job. ER, manufacturing, you name it. Don’t like it? Find another job with bankers hours - if you can.

Disgusting...The truth is , other than *more* profit, these companies like Walmart could care less about America, Thanksgiving, Christmas or their employees.
Shifts overlap, so whoever is there when they leave will take over. Sometimes we have had 2 employees try to cover the whole floor and I have had many many people ask me (a cashier) where to fine something on the floor. We all have to know where to find something so we can help, even if we are approached when on lunch or going home.
Many times I have been asked when walking thru the store to leave, and I show them where to find something and answer their questions.
Thank-you. I never suggested people run to the government and it is, though not abusive”, less than nice policies that like Walmart’s new one that gives unions a foothold to step in. What will Walmart be when workers turn to the unions to get a set schedule?
Good post.
Sorry, America doesn’t believe this anymore:
General Thanksgiving (1789)
By the PRESIDENT of the United States Of America (Washington)
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houfes of Congress have, by their joint committee, requefted me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God . . .

“What will Walmart be when workers turn to the unions to get a set schedule?”
ROTFLMAO!
Not gonna happen my FRiend, not gonna happen. Go find a better job if you don’t like retail. You can get a better job, right?
Don't listen to some of these AH's. They'll do everything in their power to convince all it's perfect fine for these Communist product pushers to be open Christmas, Thanksgiving etc.
When it comes to profits, nothing is sacred.
Closed.
There is already a track record.
Waaaahhhhhh! Go work somewhere else. My wife ain’t whining about it. Why are you? If you think the grass is greener elsewhere then take your whing self down the road. If you can better run the company, then why are you not at the top of the corporate ladder? I’ll answer my own question: Because you’re a whiner.
I own my own business and work about 80 hours a week. Heck, I do it for less than my wife makes at WalMart....lol! I should whine because my boss makes me work so much.
