So here I was - taking my daughter to school this morning (She is a high school sophomore) and she was telling me of a discussion she and the other kids were having about Black History Month.
One kid suggested that - to be fair - there should be a White History Month. He was quickly chastised; "Whites don't deserve a special history month due to the racial prejudices they've committed over the years". My daughter related some of the "Rosa Parks" types of incidents as evidence of why there should be no White History Month.
It was early. I was driving and had not yet had my first cup of coffee. And so I was speechless.
Freepers
What would YOU have said?
Booker T Washington said it best, about 100 years ago:
“There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs-partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”
My dad sent me to the store for lettuce a few days before Christmas. As I approached the produce area, a couple women switched from speaking in English to speaking in German. I selected my lettuce, then moved along after saying, "Fröhliche Weinachten". Switching languages as an exclusionary tactic doesn't work well in this country. I passed my German proficiency at UCSD by taking the SAT II test in German, then successfully completing the oral proficiency with a 30 minute discussion of an article from Der Stern with a native speaker. I don't use it much anymore, but I found it very handy while attending school. A couple of the technical books I needed were offered in English, French, German and Russian. English copies were available for a week and all checked out. German copies were available for the whole quarter. I took the German copies.
Excellent quote!
Your kid raped a llama in the boys room at school. YOU admitted it.
Since you have no proof I ever stated or even inferred my kids made racist remarks, and since this is open season day on FReeper’s children, I feel the truth can come out.
Little OJustice kids rape llamas.
Clear enough?
Teaching the truth to our children is sometimes hard and painful but it has to be a priority. Race relations, globull warming, ... are all topics that my family has discussed since they were little ones. Raising 2 knuckle dragging redneck conservatives is my goal.
Please clear something up for me - is this your daughter being written about or did you post someone else’s story?
Yes, I know it doesn’t, but since I pick and choose when I do so, I can avoid that. I love the irritated looks I get when I do it.
There is a book called the “Color of Crime” that illustrates that it is people of color who are more likely to commit crime and even hate crimes.
i totally agree. if you aren’t talking about it at home, where are they going to get their ideology? the popular culture, including liberal claptrap about black history month, will fill in whatever we don’t tell them. if we don’t insure our kids heads are screwed on straight, we can’t blame anyone else for how they turn out. i am always amazed at conservatives who talk about their kids TURNING UP liberal [kind of like turning up PREGNANT! LOL] And i also disagree with whoever said that sometimes kids THINK FOR THEMSELVES despite the parental instruction. um, my kids think for themselves quite well, and think CONSERVATIVELY, because they understand the issues and why we believe what we believe. they aren’t just parroting back what they hear us say, we discuss things in depth.
True.
See post # 110.
Thanks both for the link. I’ve saved it for further reading.
Screw that, let them go back to Africa.
Al Sharpton, Jesse Jacks-nnnn, John Conyers, John Lewis, just a few of the people holding down the black race more than most.
Black history month only exists in the US because for much of recorded history Black history meant Zimbwabe, South Africa, Uganda. etc
That sounds about right so I bet he’s on the “Uncle Tom” list.
A reaction based on past experince cannot be racist, nor can it be called prejudice.
Prejudice means an opinion based without the benefit of experience (or, pre-judging). Since yours is based upon experience, it cannot be prejudice.
And you are not a racist either.
You've had negative experiences that have left lasting impressions. To have such a cause and effect relationship in one's brain is simply human nature. We avoid that which has caused us pain in the past.I don't think it can be called racism, nor prejudice. Just my 2 cents.
That was a joke calex.
I thought it was obvious, sorry that it wasn’t.
After all, who was it that sold blacks into slavery? Their fellow blacks.
And who was it that fought and died to give blacks their liberty in America? It was white Americans.
In any event, your daughter deserves a firm, fair and knowledgable response. She needs to be able to defend herself from public school bullshit like this.
You can always point to things whites have done for blacks of which are numerous. Affirmative action, federal grants, loans, etc. are available for blacks as opposed to whites. You can point to Obama as an example of whites trying to do the right thing racially even if it was really dumb. What have blacks done lately that gives them extra consideration and rights?
And what is the ideal? Either everyone should enjoy celebrating the positive aspects of their racial identity, which whites also have in abundance, or we should all forget our racial identities, including blacks begin a new era without racial jealousies and resentments. You can tell her that instead or at least first.
Best that there be no history month save maybe for American History Month.
Second, home school and if not that cut her off and let her see how she likes equality.
