They will tell you the Civil War was not about slavery. Remind them that the president and vice president of the so-called "Confederate States of America" both said it was. They will tell you that great-great grandpa Zeke fought for the South, and he never owned any slaves. Remind them that it is political leaders - not grunts - who decide whether and why a war is waged. They will tell you the flag just celebrates heritage. Remind them that "heritage" is not a synonym for "good." After all, Nazis have a heritage, too.

Just another bad precedent, like so many others, that would be overturned if more than 5% of the people in this country had a clue about the Constitution as it was originally intended.

There is more treason in the Congress and in the media today than ever existed in the South during the War of NOrthern Agression -- unless you want name wanting to be left the hell alone as treason.
By the way, do you consider those who started our War of Independence to be traitors?

It’s amazing how every section disbelieves in the right of secession when it’s not their section threatening to secede. The fact that the Hartford Convention was threatening secession DURING a time when the country was in a life-or-death struggle with the most powerful nation on earth probably contributed some to the hyperbole of the editorial you cite.

I am not familiar with the case but what is done in right after a war, in the heat of passion is one thing and what is done 150 or 1500 years later, when, despite all the bickering of the armchair generals, the matters have been amply transcended is quite another. There are neighborhoods full of Fascist style architecture in Rome and in a way, though not my favorite style, it’s perfectly fine (and most of it is a sight better than a lot of the socialist-communist stuff bult later). IMHO it would be a damned shamed to knock them down over politics, trying to hide every single trace of a twenty year period that at least in the beginning, had everyone enthralled. Better the visual reminders. Real victories, with all the healing, forgetting and forgiving are a matter of transcending, more than eradicating.
I’m not really all that aware of the living passions at play on this issue, but I do belive that heritage is not just about being politically or even morally right and wrong. I don’t think that only the politically and morally right signs of the past must be allowed to survive. And as we say here, even the cleanest dog has the mange.

To be fair, most of the North was just as segregated and just as racist. You think a black guy could have dated a white woman in 1950s Queens or Cleveland or Sacramento, and not ended up in a world of hurt?
