they can communicate using owl post, talking patronuses, or 2-way mirrors.

Owl post isn't instantaneous, talking patronus is one-way (just delivers a message) and many wizards don't seem to have that skill, and there's only one two-way mirror mentioned.

Hey- if you’ve got that much free time that you can waste it on a subject you don’t care about, talking to people who don’t care what you have to say, and have repeatedly told you that your opinion on the subject at hand is absolutely worthless to them, then knock yourself out!

Gosh, I've read several books this summer, too; David McCullough's "John Adams", Joseph Ellis's "His Excellency, George Washington", "Storm Warning" by Nancy Mathis, and four Tony Hillerman books about Navajo Tribal Police. In addition to those, I read "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". I'm now reading "Contract" by Gerald Seymour, and have a couple of David Baldaccis waiting.

You seem to be under that impression that those who might spend their time reading Harry Potter books don't have the sophistication to enjoy other forms of literature.

You obviously couldn't be more wrong.

I loved the epilogue.

From her superb message through Bill and Fleur (being attracted to qualities in spite of looks) to her wrap-up of all the main characters married with families ~ what a strong message to young people about selfless goals.

Even Snape proved to be one of the most selfless of all, with no family to show for it except his students at Hogwarts who never understood what he was really doing. Only Dumbledore really knew him. Even killing Dumbledore was a twofold selfless act ~ to save both Draco and Dumbledore from being torn apart (Draco emotionally/spiritually and Dumbledore physically.)

So.... you think Harry should have been left to die in the end. Must you continue to say it, time and time and time again?

Rowling wrote what she wrote. You don't like the final chapters. So rip them out of your copy of the book and be done with it.

Have you seen the PBS-Mystery videos of some of the Hillerman books? They’re very well done (except for “Skinwalkers,” where they messed with the plot way too much), and have great casting.

Wes Studi as Joe Leaphorn! (Speaking of actors one can watch (and listen to) forever ...

Maybe she envisioned this ending all along.

She is said to have written that last chapter/epilogue before she wrote the books themselves.

I just think it’s inconsistent to have, for instance, celebrations of Christmas and Easter when (apparently) no character practices Christianity.

Well, I don't know about that. True, they don't go to church, or show any outward religious trappings.

But if you look at what Rowling's protagonists stand for, it's pretty clear that they're portrayed as doing Christianity, whereas modern Christians all too often do not.

When you think of what it takes to conjure a patronus, it’s almost like Rowling’s referring to the power of prayer. The patronus will only appear when one replaces fear with pure joy.

Yes and no. As others have noted in this thread, there's a strong element of, "The end justifies the means," in many plot situations. The "Unforgivable Curses," for example, become, not "forgivable," but not even worthy of mention, when performed by a "good" character.

It's true that it's a desperate struggle for survival, where moral confusion is more likely than not. I'd hesitate, however, to describe any character overall as "doing Christianity."

Owl post, quills, and a lot of other "old stuff" in the wizarding world: candles, not lights, and so on.

I think that, once again, we're seeing something of Rowling's own mindset. I mean, heck ... she even writes her books long-hand. Those things are all throwbacks to a slower, probably more thoughtful, and certainly simpler time. I think she sees our modern "need for speed" as dangerous.

The bad guys are the ones who control the more modern machineries of state and efficient production -- sorta like the orcs or the Sackville-Baggins family in LOTR; or the bad guys in the final book of the Narnia series.

Who among us hasn't yearned for the apparent simplicity of the old days -- or at least we could combine it with modern convenience?

Thank you. I love that patronus concept, and the fact that Snape’s was the doe, same as Lily’s.
