The following is the complete text of Mel Gibson's statement regarding his arrest for investigation of driving under the influence of alcohol:
"After drinking alcohol on Thursday night, I did a number of things that were very wrong and for which I am ashamed. I drove a car when I should not have, and was stopped by the L.A. County sheriffs. The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable. I am deeply ashamed of everything I said.
"Also, I take this opportunity to apologize to the deputies involved for my belligerent behavior. They have always been there for me in my community and indeed probably saved me from myself. I disgraced myself and my family with my behavior and for that I am truly sorry.
"I have battled the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse. I apologize for any behavior unbecoming of me in my inebriated state and have already taken necessary steps to ensure my return to health."
LOL, I'll say.
Yes..it was my bad time in life...
I was up to almost a two cases of beer a week before I took hold.
Was I an alkie? Damn close too it. So I can afford to have a bit more compassion for him.
Also, I was a Volunteer EMT who had seen the effects of drunk drivers. What Mel did was wrong, what he said was wrong. All I am asking for is a bit of the compassion for a guy who made a mistake.
He seems to have confirmed that with his statements while under the influence.
And, he could have killed somebody.
I defended him last night because I could not fathom that someone like Gibson would be this stupid.
I knew of a man who during a blackout sexually assaulted his mother. Do you think he harbored these feelings for his mother sober? I think not.
I understand you may never feel the same about Mel but if he is truly sorry for what he has done give him the chance to prove it.
I think he should pay for it. But he will only pay for it if people make him pay for it. I will join those who intend to make him pay for it.
I assume you're kidding, right? you forgot the "/sarc" at the end of your post..
Do you find anything about THAT anti-semetic. Really...I'm curious.
I don't really understand your question. But, to restate, being pro-Israel does not buy conservatives any passes from being accused of antisemitism. As a matter of fact, it often brings these accusations out.
Holy moly.
I will never cease to be amazed at the wrongly obtained societal status people are given for making a living at 'let's pretend'.
OH, so an international celebrity quoted and printed around the world stating that Jews are the reason for all the ills of the world is just as bad as me saying he can go to hell on a website? YOU'RE INSANE.
Why don't you ping some of us, and ask.
I dislike most movie stars. Mel seems / seemed different.
I hope the 'report' regarding his comments about Jews is not true, but if it is, I will no longer support him financially in any way.
He apologized for how he treated the deputies. He made no reference to his Jew-hating remarks.
Saying something sober with intent that wishing someone an eternity of suffering versus saying alleged racist comments when intoxicated can not be compared rationally.
Not kidding at all. Has Jesse Jackson apologized for "Hymietown" yet? Has Hillary apologized for calling whoever it was (name escapes me at the moment) a f***ing Jew bastard?
This is the ONLY public apology I've ever seen for anti-Semitism. How many have you seen? If he wasn't ashamed, why would he bother? No one else does.
It does not say here that he was in a blackout...in fact, in his statement he clearly knows what he said. Listen, Gibson has a right to think what he thinks..but as a celebrity he must take the responsibility for his actions. This is even worse than what the Dixie Chicks did, in my opinion.
You're a moron.
Dear sinkspur,
I didn't say that anti-semitism is defensible.
However, it isn't unbecoming to avoid kicking a man when he's down.
He will be held accountable for his actions.
What he did was foolish, stupid, and evil.
However, beyond that, he has only my prayers. Addictions are a nasty business.
